Yesterday, March 8 2009, a Filipino spear fisherman failed to surface after a dive at White Rock, Samal, Davao (name withheld).

Fellow spearfishers on the banca, tourist divers and sports divers waited for two hours before a rescue/recovery attempt was made.

The body of the spearfisher was found at 192feet and brought to the surface. He was diving solo and on twin-tanks of air - accepted practice amongst the group. His tanks had 2000psi pressure remaining and a 20 kilo fish was found dead attached to his speargun.

Divers from the group and the owner of the diveshop concered visited the family of the departed diver today.

Hmm, what do you think, is there any way to tell if he 'went deeper' than 192ft. or it may have occurred shallower and he sunk back down after succumbing?

Hi Tom. Nobody really knows what happened. Depth, narcosis, heart attack, stroke, bad air, fish attack - who knows. Lots of local theories, but unless a full investigation including examination of equipment, air and an autopsy are performed then its open to speculation (there's a lot of this at the moment).

We're just very sad for the family and all those caught up in this tragedy.

We were told that his family knew that he dived solo deep and accepted that there was a risk to this.

In our opinion, had he dived with a buddy, then things might have been different.

chito had a coronary. he knew about his condition having had two previous attacks already. he was a 20 yr spearfishing veteran. he was a friend.

(the fish was only 12kg, damn you chito! rest in peace :))
