I was told that sand and other mild abrasives will take the pencile off my writing slate. Well, I can still sort of see what I wrote on my past 4 dives. Any suggestions?

softscrub works wonders, but you can't beat crest toothpaste for ease, cost and enviro friendliness.

I use a plain old Magic™ Eraser.

Plane old pencil Eraser
anything else will scratch the surface and make it harder to remove the writing next time.

I usually forget to clean it at home. When I'm diving, I grab a handful of sand and rub. The slate is clean and ready for more notes. Also, I've never had to replace a slate yet.:boom:

You guys use a slate? I guess you don't dive with your wife then. If married couples used slates then you'd have to listen to your wife down there. I mean this is why we dive right? Limited communication is what we want. ;)

What kind of slate surface??

I think the scratching concerns depend on the slate surface. I've got one from Trident that I use for classes that has a rough, tiny pebbled surface and Softscrub works great. Clean as a whistle. I've got an old slate from my newbie days that's slick and shiny and it doesn't take to a pencil very well at all....so not to worry about getting it clean!

The rough pads they sell for non-stick cookware work pretty well, I keep a small piece in my stuff. Toothpaste on the pad works even better.

Best and easiest method was used pink eraser. Drilled 1/8 hold through top, tied rubber band through it and mounted to slate.

On "traditional" slates, I use the magic eraser... But I got me one of those magna-doodle style slates, which rock! Just slide the lever up and down, and you're good to go... Works great when leading a dive and you want to tell people what they are seeing...

i like to use a little bit of Ajax and a toothbrush.

not only gets rid of the pencil marks, but bleaches the slate a bright white

I prefer Aquafresh over crest!!

Seriously, soft scrub works fine and so does a other commercial products with mild abrasives in them.

I covered mine with layers of white med tape, works like the tear offs for goggles. Is inconvenient for long winded conversations but that's what wet notes are for.

Dishwasher detergent.. mildly abrasive, little clorox action... clean and white.

I've also used Baking Soda, Arm&Hammer style.

Elite,

Check out this link (http://s1059kxm.leisurepro.com/webapp/commerce/command/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=1624&prmenbr=946). I'm sure you can also find these at local dive shops.
