I'm exploring the possibility of getting my DM internship in the Micronesia region. One of the reasons is that I've dived Palau before and thoroughly enjoyed it, although it was a LOB experience.

Can anybody who have done an internship in the area give me some comments regarding:

1. Location - I have never visited Micronesia except Palau so don't know whether there are any other location that are suitable as it needs to be land based. Would Tahiti or any other location be a consideration for me?

2. Diversity and quality of dive sites - I am not looking to go professional so would like to enjoy my diving on a day-to-day basis while pushing my limits in order to improve my diving skills and knowledge.

3. Reasonable cost - As I will be staying at least a month, I would need to find a place where it is not entirely catered for the wealthy tourists (US$100+ per night hotel cost). My budget for accommodation is around US$1000 per month.

4. Availability of top side activities - Would like to be based out of somewhere there is a local community where I can unwind after diving (maybe a few drinks here and there but not any serious partying) and other activities are available.

First, you might want to check to see if the dive guides are really divemasters in many cases they are not - not just in Micronesia but in many places of the world. For instance, on Pohnpei the dive guides who are locals are simply OW or AOW certified. There was an instructor around who worked for the other dive operation (he was Japaneese). I saw the same on Chuuk. As I remember Kosrae was similar. Not sure about Yap or Palau (ask me again in a couple months).

My suggestion would to look at Utila. Lots of people intern there for cheap and they are more set up for teaching with interns.

There are lots of dive shops on Saipan that do this sort of thing. What languages do you speak? What country are you from?
