Question re AF35 Autostrobe

The sensor is located at the top of the handle right below the flex arm. The sensor part is on the side facing the camera housing and the "exposure selector dial" is on the other side.

I see two sensors there behind the plastic window and I thought these were to trigger the flash.

I would have thought the sensor controlling the flash auto exposure would be facing the subject? How can a sensor control the light output to the subject, when it's not facing the subject?

The camera is monitoring exposure and turning its flash on and off at the appropriate times. The AF35 mimics the camera's built-in flash. So the sensor watches the camera's flash and communicates with the AF35 strobe head via a hard-wired cable connection.
