Hey everyone,

My April trip fell through, so now we're planning a late May to Early June trip. Looking for a hotel w/ an on site dive shop as well as beach/shore diving included (if you purchase their diving packages or whatever). Specifically looking as to whether or not Fiesta Americana, Hotel Cozumel, and Casa Del Mar allow unlimited shore diving if you dive with their on-site dive shops.

Reason being, I can't quite afford 2 boat trips/day and would like to be able to get a few more dives in after diving on a boat in the morning. Yes I understand that shore diving in Cozy isn't the greatest, but being underwater is all that matters to me really :)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Blue Angel will be ~$300-$350 more per person, but does include 5 days worth of 2 tank diving....hmmm.

First, nothing against Blue Angel. Visited many times but never stayed but will sometime when when my daughter gets older. At Fiesta Americana diving with the on site op, Dive House, you can shore dive for free. I can't say much else about the op because I use Blue Angel however I can still rent tanks from Dive House for $5 ea. I did my first shore dive in Coz last May at FA and it was well worth the money. Granted, you're not going to see a lot of big coral formations but you will see a lot of little cool stuff.

If you check out the rates Coz seems to have some of the best prices around for boat diving. SCC rates were only $60/day for two dives. I just looked at the website and they are running a June Special - 5 nights, 4 days of 2-tank diving, 3 meals a day, 1 night dive for $650, or roughly $125/night and it includes all the shore diving you care to do.

I've stayed at Casa Del Mar dove with Del Mar Aquatics and every time we dove with them we have free shore diving.

We are headed back down on May 21st. We will be staying at Villa Blanca and diving with Scuba Mau. Right next door to each other. Good rates on their packages and free shore diving to boot. Also can do night shore dives very easily. Nice beach bar across the street as well.

Blue Angel has the same opportuntity. But their prices are a little higher. I have several stays with both. If you are looking for budget and convinence. Villa Blanca and Scuba Mau have a great deal.

What she said.
Yup - what they said

But as has been posted many times on this board, Cozumel is not Bonaire when it comes to shore diving.

2 tanks in the AM and a shore dive off Blue Angel is fine for me, but YMMV

We are planning a trip for August, staying at Hotel Cozumel, and have been looking at dive op's in the area. Thus far Scuba Mau has the best package rates and offers free shore diving. Opal said that we could jump in at her shop and head north getting out at HC and that they would come and pick up our gear once or twice during our stay. Not bad customer service. The other three shops in the running are Dive Paradise, Blue Angel and Papa Hogs.

I hate to burst any bubbles and maybe need to check prices for comparison, but if shore diving is all you're interested in then why not think---Bonaire? It doesn't get better as far as dive freedom is concerned.

Don't get me wrong. I've been both places many times and Coz has it's own nitch in the scuba world, but Bonaire can be compared to when it comes to shore diving.

I think he was just looking for shore diving after 1 boat trip / day.

WE hope to check out Bonaire for the shore diving one of these days also. But hard to beat Coz's prices.

I think this is pretty much their 'normal' price now, right??.....except for air, Roatan is cheap.....I know, that's why we just sold our house on the beach of 14 years 2 miles east of AKR ---dang air fair!!...lol....

Dive Paradise, one of this sites sponsors, offers hotel/dive packages at very affordable rates. I have stayed at several of their hotels listed, & shore diving was free. Chankanab Park, south of town is a beautiful park to visit & you can do a couple of dives there, inexpensively.

Not quite. Nitrox is included if booked by 4/30 according to the e-mail I received and they now offer the alcohol as part of the all inclusive deal (I just gave the link for the contact, you may have to call them about the special). Do not get me wrong, I am not promoting this deal and have no relationship with the Manduro. I was responding to the statement about cheap shore diving - At FI (whoever you book with) it is a good deal and you get good shore diving along with the boat dives. Coz has also been a big fav of mine, but recent trips (one last year) yielded a mix review from me. The diving was great (more marine life it seemed to me and more sharks, though the coral is still recovering from the hurricane). The "town experience" really tanked in my opinion.Seems to get worse each year. It is one of the major cruise ship destinations and the focus is on getting the most $ out of the gringo in the shortest amount of time. I used to really enjoy hitting the local restaurants at night and enjoying walking around town when not night diving. This has changed. One person that went with our group got ripped off at a jewelry store (granted it was not one of the majors and it would not have been one I would recommend). He was buying a bracelet for a lady friend and they switched it for a cheap one when they wrapped it. He didn't catch it until we were already at the airport. Still Coz remains high on my list for the diving.

I think you should also consider SUBA Club Cozumel. They have what you've listed abouve.

I, too , am getting tired of downtown Cozumel. I loved the Sunday nights there & dancing with the senoritas was a pleasure. I am no longer able to dive but still go there when I can. The harassment by vendors, time-share hawks, & a few dishonest sellers have been a big turn off for me. WARNING-- If you rent a car & buy gas at the large station in town, they will cheat you everytime ! WATCH THEM. One trick they do is use a pump on the opposite side of your car, pump the gas for you, then charge much more than was pumped. I have deliberately watched them the last 2 trips there, & have caught them trying to overcharge me on gas! I confronted them & they " apologized " & corrected the bill. If you pay in U.S. dollars, they will give you a very poor exchange rate, too.
I have been to Cozumel many times since the early 1980's & won't be going there so often anymore because of such practices. Cancun was a great place to visit in the early '80's but I never go there, now, except to transfer & go to Isla Mujeres, Valladoid, or Isla Contoy. Going thru Cancun airport is awful, to me.

To each his own; I still love to walk around in town on Cozumel. Some people will try to cheat you no matter where you go, and that gas station trick is a very old one.

The hawkers don't bother me, and sometimes I have a little fun with them. Once a young guy approached me on the square trying to sell me a "tour of Cozumel". I pointed out to him that I had been visiting Cozumel since before he was born, and did he want me to give him a tour? He thought it was funny, too, and he just waved at me and smiled every time I saw him after that.

When I am on Cozumel, I refuse to be "turned off".

Go into to town? What for? I'm in Cozumel to dive and play with my underwater camera rig. San Miguel wasn't all that great twenty years ago - remember when there weren't any walk streets around the plaza?

From the airport to SCC, immediately upon arrival. Three weeks later, from SCC back to the airport. Well, to be honest, once in a while I might venture out the gates to walk up to Chedraui for something.

Your statement , " because you're [ should be your ] lazy a$$ won't go exchange it , " I condone as a personal attack & have reported you to the moderator.

If you excuse, forgive, or hold the statement harmless (condone) (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/condone),
then why report it to the moderator??

The spelling police are not the only ones on the scene :mooner:

Go into to town? What for?

Well, in my case...

To eat at the restaurants; some of my favorite eateries anywhere are in San Miguel.
To visit old friends who work at those restaurants.
To go to the Sunday night dance in the plaza.
To go to the liquor store for ice, beer, and Xtabentun.
To rent a car to go around the island.
To use the ATM.
To have a beer at a sidewalk cafe and laugh at the pod people.

But YMMV and DSFDF.

Ya kinda like when you where a teenager and had to get out of the house and head to downtown. Just walk aimlessly and look at people, see a friend, have a coke. Not be serious.

But Gordon, that's time you could be in the water.

Oh, that's right; you're from Austin. Not much going on there. :D

Xtabentun? I haven't had any of that for years and years! Does it still come in those funny looking, blue bottles?

The Xtabentun I get is in a clear bottle with a couple of Mayan guys on the label; one of them is giving some sort of offering to the other, who is sitting on a throne. The big pyramid at Chichen Itza is in the background. The brand is D'Aristi.

Nothing much going on here in Austin. Right. :D

Gee Mod that's what I was trying to tell him to do, have fun and all the good Capt. was doing was slamming Cozumel as a place that is run by cheats and scam artists. As a matter of fact why dont you remove his posts that suggest that?
It was suggested on my post you removed that this hijack should end.
