View Full Version : Are you a 'Five Fathom Club' member?

Here's a chance for some fun on the Scubaboard.
Surely there'll be no opinionated debate on this thread!
The current issue of Men's Health has an article containing a lot of trivia about flying. One item which caught my eye says that 1 flyer in 10 (man or woman) has joined the 'Mile High Club'. Apparently there's a lot of shaggin' going on in the air. On a typical flight with 150 people, about 7 couples manage to 'get together'.
It got me wondering how many scuba divers are members of the '5 Fathom Club'. If you have enjoyed the ultimate 'buddy dive' with one of your diving friends while on scuba and at a depth of about 30' or more, you're in!
Obviously swimming pools don't count.
Fresh water (Brrrrr..) or sea water is OK.
Let's see if it's really true that 'Diver's Do It Deeper'!!

Sorry already beaten to death by the tek guys. Lots of good humour though especially the comment by Spectre and the new PADI speciality course.

You have to admit that. Makes you want to go out and become a tech diver. ;)

Well I am dating a tech and my dive partner is a tech and well neither are anal. Maybe your hanging around the wrong crowd my friend. I was going to say something else, and those who know me know where I'm going, so I will leave it alone and just put on a big smile. :D

Tech divers aren't anal. (Did I spell that right? Is this the proper font for a response?)
Of course there is a major focus on redundancy.

I don't know about anal, but techies are definately into some kinky things. The threads I've seen discussing black versus clear skirts, the use of butt rings, side mounting and sucking on a long hose are certainly not for the more genteel among us. ;) :D

How did we get from Five Fathom Club membership to being anal?
Is there something about the private lives of techies that I don't know about? And don't want to know about!!
I started this thread to add some comic relief to a board that too often is anal - guess what?

Do you think they would issue a specialty card for it?? It would be a great card for the card collectors out there. Maybe even get those milestones on them, ie 50th "special buddy dive".
What would be the pre-requisite for becoming an instructor of this program?
What would be minimum equipment? What would be minimum bottom time? Would there be a rapid ascent alarms?
I have some photos but I guess I better not attach them.

Cobaltbabe, dating a diver is a very bad thing to do as a diver (see the Women's only section). Especially with underwater coms. LOL :D

We have great underwater communications ;) . And we have more in common then just diving, you have to if it is going to work.

But... a few years back I got invited to Brasil to video some of the caves down there... some really beautiful trimix depth caves near Bonito. Anyway, a bunch of us were getting ready to go into this particular hole in the ground and we are standing around some makeshift benches chit-chatting and I turned to one of my buddies as I'm putting KW jelly on my drysuit cuffs (makes putting them on easier) and he is connecting his Pvalve to... well you know. And I said: "Larry, if you'd have told me ten years ago, I'd be in Brasil one day, with KW in one hand and a condom in the other, I think I'd have had a whole other activity in mind!"
He giggled and dropped his condom down the leg of his drysuit.
Technical divers stay down longer!
Thanks

I sure thought this thread was going to be a lot more interesting than that. I'll save my ultimate buddy dive experience for when I dive with a woman I truly like and we're not here in the cold waters of southern California! Thailand or Tahiti anyone?

Anyone interested in a cross-poll comparing the "favorite certifying agency" to the 33% who are "not interested in being a Five Fathom Club member" ?

All talk....no action. Hmmmm, let's see...no one has 'fessed up on this one yet. Has anyone tried??? I'm thinking that there might be a "shrinkage" problem so you would have to do this in warm Caribbean water, not the cool Ontario stuff.:D

I can see some problems with that idea Butch.
Certification as a specialty instructor requires:
Option 1 - 20 logged dives submitted with a course outline to PADI. This option requires 25 dives signed by your buddy showing some variety of environment and mastery of the main skills. The outline must include a list of the equipment needed by both the instructor and student plus a thorough review of the purpose, procedures and hazards of the proposed dive. The course would also require evaluation of the mastery of the skills in open water.
Option 2 - 10 logged dives (also requiring verification) plus a Specialty course conducted by a PADI Course Director who holds an Instructor-level certification in that specialty.
I'm still working on the logged dives!
Actually I have the dives - I'm working on getting the signatures!!

I know a lot of divers who swear by KY (jelly AND liquid). They said it helped getting their arms and neck past the seals of their dry suits. After reading this thread I think I know better.

Yes Steve I do respect you. And to date I have 7 dives under my belt. We went to Ducks last Saturday and dove with Matt and Randy and Brad at Marmora on Sunday. Passed through my first thermacline, burrrrr, but not too bad. Love it. Now I have to get my bouyancy and trim down and I will be almost happy. Yes I already want to dive deeper.

Well, my dear... it's not just deeper, but smarter. And it's great that you already have 7 dives under your weight belt. Looks like we have another live one here folks... keep diving and buoyancy and awareness are going to be your friends always... pay them lots of attention.

I am actually paying attention to my limitations and my environment as well. They tried to get me to go in the bell but I wasn't ready. This coming weekend I think I will attempt the it. I know it doesn't seem like much for those who have been in it but for me it is a big move. I think Matt will go in with me to make sure I don't panic with the silt rising and Adam can stay outside to drag me out by the fins. :) I should be fine.

Good for you to know your limitations.
Q1. What is the Bell?
Q2. How does one make silt?

A1: the bell is a diving bell at duck's dive
A2: not "making" silt, DISTURBING silt

Now you can just stop that line of thought right now. I watched Adam and Matt try to go in with doubles last weekend. And it's too cold down there to get hung up on anything else. ;)

Doubles.....they cant be sucking that much air. Suggest a 63 cu foot tank for that site. The water might be cold but that is just too much over compensating:D :D :D

You're right, it's massive overkill for that site. But, should be good fro checking out the Alberta! :D

I'm not sure where all this double talk about 'heavy breathing', 'sucking air','doubles', etc is coming from but I have no problem with people doing their own thing - in private.
I definately agree with Butch that no amount of solo dives gives any credit towards becoming a club member!!
