Hey guys

Anybody got an idea what Malerone costs in PI? In Netherlands it's 3 euro a pop (like 4$) Kinda sick price if you ask me. (more expensive than xtc lol)

How do you stand on using it anyway? I want to use when I go into the jungle or near sweet water with lots of mosquitoes so I was planning on buying 22 pills for three months..

ten days before departure :lotsalove:

If you are going to a known Malaria Infected area it is best to contact people on site and ask them what precautions are required as the Mosquito is quite a clever beast and builds immunity to certain drugs rendering them pretty useless! Just because a medication is expensive does not mean its going to protect you in all locations!
I suffered horendously from Malaria in Africa and I still get throw backs to this day and at the times I was taking all precautions to prevent it but it don't always work!
Maybe a full dry suit and hood worn 24 hours a day might keep you safe!
Yup, Check with the locals at the site you are going too!

Well pretty much the whole of Philippines is a Malaria area; including Manila, PG and Manila according the local tropic institute in Netherlands..

But I got lucky; a friend of mine just returned from S America and still got a load of them so I can buy em from him

some commercial institue that offers the injections but not the Malerone (they do give the required recipe for the drugstore though)

So it's BS?

They probbably name it malaria infected when 1 guy got sick the last 10years 1oo miles around that area

they had a map that only exluded a few islands in the middle

I don't know what Malarone you have, but mine (Malarone 250-100MG) said start taking it 2 days before arrival, daily while there (Roatan) and then 2 days afterward. So for 3mos. I think you're going to need a lot more pills..lol

koya, you missed sonar's next post (#7). :)

Sonar, didn't you ask about this before (http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/philippine-paradise-divers/275935-malaria-palawan.html#post4270935)? yeah, you're correct - Malaria in Manila is BS. I wouldn't worry too much if you'll be heading to PG and Coron.

Keep your eye on your wallet and bring a condom. Don't worry about malaria. It's the last think you will get.

cool thanks guys; I ll bring some pills but only take when I go into the jungle

@chip; you are a better searcher than me; I remember posting something about it but couldnt find it back.

I hate these institutes trying to make you all worried. I told that wannabe doctor I wasnt too worried about it and she started looking at me like I was suicidal or something. Immediately describing the effects of Malaria and the risks involved.

6 days and I am out boombyeyeah

Malaria is a real issue here in South - Eastern Africa - but I have never bothered about during my many trips to Phils.

The latest SA DAN mag I got has an article on Malaria prevention, it lists Malarone and says its pretty much good for diving although "Additional sensitivity to motion sickness" has been reported. The one to avoid is Lariam, its hectic on the mind and unsafe for divers.

I don't know if you may have some underlying condition and its none of my business but if not it seems odd to take Malarone for Roatan considering the WHO and CDC both list chloroquine as the recommended anti malarial and over prescribing simply helps the bugs get resistant at a faster pace. Did you happen to ask your prescriber about this?

I personally would be more concerned with being bit by a Dengue mosquito.

I agree with twomixdiver. I got a hit of dengue while on bonaire in march . The worst 30 day illness you could imagine. I am surprised there is not more talk of dengue. I took precautions , spraying deet all the time , of the four bites I got in a week I paid severly.
