I have one last question or opinion.I have a private boat in cozumel in a couple days
and cant decide on something. How much do I tip the DM and the driver. Its not the driver I have questions about really it the DM.The reason I say this is because he is getting paid (he is the owner) like there are 6 divers when there are only 2.Should this have any baring on my tip and what is a good amount for 3 days of dives?

Your question is a two parter: The answer to the first part is that you tip the owner same as you would tip a DM. He may choose to give it all to his captain or not but that's not your concern. Tip according to the service you receive. IMO, the answer to second part is that you shouldn't feel compelled to tip for people that aren't there (for "lost" revenue -- chances are very high that this boat and captain wouldn't have been working that day, so you've already done them a great favor.) Nor is is it necessary to calculate the tip as a percentage of the total trip cost in this situation. It's SOP to tip by the tank - most use $5 minimum and I've heard of $10 at the very top of the tipping scale, no pun intended.

I tip $10 per trip - give it to the DM - if he splits it w/ the cap't (likely) thats up to them

I would suggest $5. per tank for each person on board for great service. If it is above and beyond your expectations than by all means tip more. I would make it clear that the tip money is for both the DM/owner and the captain and let them work out the detalis of who gets what.

I'd have to say that I agree with the info already posted, but might add that if I had booked a private use of the boat I'd feel that good service was worth the high end of the scale, but I wouldn't be tipping for the empty seats, just the service.

I tip $10 per tank, as long as the service is good.

I dunno what kind of deal you are getting for a private boat, but aren't you basically already paying for the empty seats??.......and so the guidelines of the posters above seem fair.
