I was exploring the path to becoming an instuctor and was wondering if PADI requires you to go through those expensive "Instructor Development Courses" offered by so many dive schools? Can I obtain the reading material from PADI office, prepare for it myself and then go for the exam or no!

Thanks for your answers in advance.

Of course they require that you go through those expensive "Instructor Development Courses" offered by so many dive schools.

No you can't; the IDC is a pre-requisite. It is very highly unlikely that you would succeed at an IE without first taking the IDC.

Regardless of personal feelings about expensive courses, assuming you have a good IDC conducted by a quality course director, you will learn a great deal more from experienced professionals than you would from self study.

Should you choose to go in that direction, do a lot of research, ask a lot of questions, and enjoy the experience - it's awesome! :-)

How on earth do you think you could become an instructor through self-study alone? :shocked2:
