Would like to dive Thailand over Xmas/New Years.

Dec-Jan its better to dive Phuket area compared to Ko Tao?

To really enjoy diving in around Phuket area you should do a live aboard? I'm not a big fan of live aboards

Is the Phuket area more advanced diving compared to Ko Tao?

You can do some nice diving without doing a LAB, however you will spend a lot of time in transit to the dive sites.

During the time frame that you mention, Phuket in general should have the better diving season. In order to dive the Similan islands without a lab you may want to considering relocating to kao Lak for a few days and make day trips to the Similans.

Where's the good diving in June-August?

I would like to know the best spot in late July. I found inexpensive tickets from Beijing to BKK and would like to take advantage.

June - August most likely the Gulf will have better diving. August is almost as good as it gets in the Gulf, being Koh Tao and Samui.
