This is a cross-post from the computer section, thought this may be a better fit.

I know this question has come up in a couple of threads, I have never found a great answer.

Does anyone know if the oil inside these computers/compasses is mineral oil, silicon oil, or something else.

Changing the battery in a True Track compass, and maybe in a Air X if scubapro wont give me enough incentive to trade it in.

Thank you,

Jeff

In the case of a compass...I've head that mineral oil will do the trick, but first do a smell/taste test. To be sure, you should empty out all of the old oil and refill with the new to prevent a problem due to different viscosities. It could also be ethyl alcohol, so again give it a sniff and taste test. Some liquid filled pressure gauges use glycerin as a damping fluid.

Here are a couple of sites you might find helpful:

I've read it's electronic transformer oil. If you're going to try the AirX - http://mkotva.cz/UW_comp/AAir_x_open_en.htm

Thank you ffhamm,
I'm glad I tuned in today to resolve this same problem I have with an Oceanic Compass on my console. When I asked how the air bubble could be removed at my local dive shop, they turned around an placed a new $50.00 unit on the counter. I choose not to make an impulsive purchase at that time. Thanks to ScubaBoard and the collective experience of its membership, I can keep my compass functional and spend my money for air refills. After removing the old oil and making the refill, do I just place a drop of 5 min epoxy to seal it up?
