Would anyone in that area like to set up a day to clean up some of the trash that is littering the bottom of the Marmora Dam? Everytime we dive there, it amazes me at the amount of trash on the bottom. If anyone is interested, lets see if we can't arrange something and have some fun in the process. Thank you. Marie

Was trying to think of something smart to say but just can't think of anything today. It is a cute little town and there is a great restaurant with incredible food just north of the site. Could be a fun day if we can get it all together. It sounds like there could be some red tape to cut before we are allowed to even attempt the clean up.

It had to do with the habitat but honestly I think that one less tire and beer can would create a far better living environment for the fish. Also the children could play in the water without having to worry about being cut.

...Cathy Jones ( a councillor) approached Dave (Bottom_Sucker) a couple of years ago to do the same......She wanted it done in May...(way to cold and heavey current that year)...
The logs cannot be removed, we need a special license for that, however garbage, (read: junk) can be removed. Caution to be had when removing junk is hazardous waste.
When we did a Trent cleanup in Campbellford we had the town guys there with their trucks to haul away the steel and the boyscouts to help pull the bags out of the water.
We could (if it is a go) contat the Lions or another group for shore help.
cobaltbabe
June 10th, 2003, 02:49 PM
I think we will need someone on shore to make sure no one gets hurt. You know there is always one who will try to get in there and help and causes more problems. I think the lions club would be a good organization to get intouch with. I know you and Randy have far more pull in the community then I do, so your help is appreciated at any level. And we are just talking about garbage. The wood is part of nature and needs to stay where it is.
Thank you everyone. Maybe we can try to include some of the new classes coming out as well. They could log a dive and help at the same time. Maybe, maybe not. Don't want to get over kill on this but the more the merrier. :)

Cathy was looking for the dive to be at same time as shore-based cleanup events taking place in May. Water flow was much too high at the time for us to undertake. Agreed there is a LOT of crap down there, many broken bottles; Butch and I have already 'hoovered' the unbroken ones. Ask him sometime about our rivermouth bottle recovery expedition last summer. :D And there's our perpetual search for anchors......
Not sure if Lions would be shore support not (speaking as member, we're busy with lots of other stuff currently)

OK...spoke to a town councillor last night, as well as the press. We'll get full support as far as trash removal, perhaps even some bbq'd dogs and full press coverage for sure. There is a lot of stuff below the Hwy 7 bridge too that needs removal (bikes, etc) and so I said thats no problem. I'll check with MNR and MOE (in writing of course) and see if there are any obstacles there. But I suspect it shouldn't be a problem. I'd also like to see some fish habitat improvement done like we did last year at the Little Lake cleanup.

Most clean up dives - Little Lake, Peterborough; and Campbellford - are normally scheduled later in Aug/Sept. so that the boating season's "droppings" can be dealt with.
You will also be competing in June/July/Aug with prime diving dates that many divers have already committed to other events.
I would happily attend. You might want to put in a call to the Adventure Divers shop in Peterborough or whomever handles the Campbellford dive for some logistical tips.
Why not blend garbage recover with enviro dive as they do in Peterborough (eg. installing fish habitats, etc.)
Consider segregating certain areas for newer divers and monitoring entry/egress depending on how silty the site is.
If heavy objects are being recovered, make sure it is divers equipped and trained to do so...
Marmora for the non-Ontarians is a delightful hamlet, less than an hour's drive East on Hwy 7 from the Metropolis of Peterborough (Peterborough? The place where Toronto vacations, slightly NE of GTA...)

Are you guys not all related anyways? Venture into Madoc for some chlorine for the gene pool? Just kidding guys, wife is from that (red) neck of the woods. I don't know if there is a PADI shop arround there but they usually want to do the project aware things and I think you get freebees from PADI. Maybe one of the PADI types could explain the project aware. I participated in Brockville's clean up once and they had all sorts of prizes for the divers (from local businesses) such as Restaurant vouchers, ball caps, and movie passes. M&M meat shops even provided the divers with free hot dogs and peach juice. It was a hoot.

OK Cobaltbabe, we'll discuss it tomorrow. Thanks for all of the input everyone. I know it will be hard to get a time that's good for everyone but we'll try. Your not alone. We need to get some of us together soon and talk legistics. Randy and I discuss some things on Sunday and we need a core group of people to get this off the ground. We need at least 2 dive masters. 4-6 people to be shore support incase of emergency. We are really thinking this out. We want all divers to have a good time and a safe time. Pairing up newbies with more experienced divers. I think everyone involved really appreciates the support.
