Someones threatens my life and you don't let me finish it? Why can't you just edit their nasty language. Board members should be allowed to see who these people are. Especially the ones who might run into these sick people out at a dive site.

I agree. That guy just sent me a PM that was just like his threat to you Mike. I have never ever joined a fight like that because most of it is just plain stupid. However...as a man I cannot let that go. You don't threaten someone's life like that. That could really get him or someone else hurt or worse. I apologize for my language but I do not and will not apologize to him for the general content of my posts. I still do not look down on the "real" DIR crowd for this guys BS. So please don't think that I against the DIR folks and what they do. I am just against idiots.

Hurray, I'm in the club.

I'm not overly concerned about a scuba amusement park specialist.

Incidentally, unlike VAJames, I don't apologize. I meant what I said, although I was somewhat restrained in view of the fact that this is a family board.

I understand your concern. I had not been following the thread. A concerned member PMed me asking me to take a look. I did and as I started reading, I saw an insult or two. I began editing the posts, soon it became obvious that most of the thread had become nothing but insults, foul language and did include a death threat from someone using TekDiveGirl's account directed toward MikeFerrara. In the thread, the person posting with TekDiveGirl's account stated he was her husband. In a PM TekDiveGirl stated it was their teenage son. I don't have personal knowledge who posted the insults and death threat. I do know each person is responsible for their own account. Accounts have passwords for a reason. If you allow another access to your account, you are responsible for the consequenses.

Frankly, I saw no reason to spend time trying to clean up individual posts, so I pulled it.

MikeFerrara
June 10th, 2003, 09:38 PM
I suppose pulling it was the best thing. The board doesn't need that. Disagreements are one thing but thing but that;s not what that was. I have no idea what that persons diving opinions are even.

Anyway I for one don't believe it was any ones teenage son.

I wonder why every one elses threats were in a PM and mine was in public.

I've been on a few forums where people find the need to attack each other. I usually don't hang around such forums long. I didn't see the attack and I guess I'm glad I didn't.

There is almost something cowardly about on-line attacks. The bully mentality at work.

That's the fun part! People get all bent out of shape and throw insults and stuff at each other and tell people they're going to die... and it's on the internet. Funny stuff ;)

TekDiveGirl was actively threatening people who show up at Gilboa Quarry.

Kinda makes you wonder why the account is still active.

I am really ticked off!

This is reprehensible behavior, and completely uncalled for. I feel terrible that someone who calls themselves DIR would act like that.

I kept trying to view the thread and it was gone, I even PM'd scubaroo about it asking what is going on.

This has nothing to do with DIR or even with anything dive related. Anyone who threatens someoene else physically, especially over how to SCUBA DIVE!!!!! should have their meds checked.

At least they have a strong on-line presence so it's easy to see who they are. My suggestion is to stay away from these people and to ignore their posts.

This is absolutely crazy....

I wonder who that is with one post that just joined and never saw that threat. I bet it couldn't be the suspect. The regulators have seen it because the PM is still sitting in my mailbox. Braunbehrens don't sweat it man. We know that person doesn't represent the DIR gang as a whole. It does add fuel to the fire of those who are 100% anti DIR though. The whole thing was uncalled for but it was solved quickly. Thanks to the Regulators that solved that issue. Everyone go home and have a drink, there is nothing to see here.....lol.

VAJames, I don't think the moderators can read your PMs. I might be wrong but I don't think so. They still have the thread (just locked away). Rick went and checked it out.

Paul, I agree that had nothing to do with diving. I for one do not assosiate you or anyone else with it because of their use of Georges quotes, support of a common agency or their use of the term DIR. I do get the impression though that ther is something? We know that some immitate GI's online style but this was a bit more. LOL, I think George will tell someone they are going to kill themself but I haven't ever heard of him saying that he was going to do it for them. Maybe it's just the internet. There are enough nuts in the world that in a media where you can communicate with so many people all over the world your bound to find one eventually. Maybe they're throwing the term DIR around because it's there and they can. You know maybe it's just a band wagon that they can jump on.

Does anybody know these people? It's hard to do much diving and not run into people from this board. Ive even run into some in my shop.

I obviously missed this thread that is being talked about. But I will say that Death threats should be taken seriously and should be reported to the proper authorities. Yes I know most are just written or said but on a rare occasion they do come true. I think there should be some legal action on this.

It would be like chasing gosts. I ruffle (or try to) enough feathers in the dive industry that it's probably dumb to use my real name or sit in front of this window. The point is that if I was going to worry about sombody it would be the person who hasn't said anything and you don't know who they are.

Even though i didnt see the original post you should really report it to your local authorities. Maybe the owner of the Scuba Board can provide them with as much information as possible about these people so they can check into it. your PMs are private. No one reads them and they are encrypted to boot.

For everyone... There is NO PARTY LINE for you to follow here! Disagree as much as you would like. Yes, you need to keep it civil but feel free to disagree as you see fit. However, realise that we recognise two types of threats; direct and indirect.

A direct threat is one that promises to do harm to a person or their belongings. ie "I wanna kick your butt when I see you at the quarry!" If you feel threatened, please contact the proper authorities. All we can do is ban the offender!

An indirect threat is just as bad, but is more of a wish for harm. ie "I hope you swallow water and die..." If you feel threatened, please contact the proper authorities. All we can do is ban the offender!

These are NOT to be confused with warning someone about possible death or harm ie "If you keep diving without looking at your SPG you might end up killing yourself..."

These also should not be confused with insults which are a whole nother category. They are handled on an individual basis. They are almost always uncool so please avoid them.

Yes Wyno... each post logs an IP address that just a few of us can see.

I have a system...it is called TDT (Tony's Diving Trials).....I decide for myself what I like and don't like. I take and evaluate all (rational and reasonable) opinions and am trying to find out what is going to work best for me. The DIR philosiphy is just anohter opinion in my mind and when someone opens their mouth and spouts garbage about something b/c they think it is DIR, more often than not, it is readily evident.

The reason im saying to report is in case one of them have a history of this type of behavior or even the possibility of one of them being on parole. It does make a difference especially if they confront you at a dive site and want to do bodily harm to you or even your family. At least this way the police have a paper trail that you have left starting with the online threats. It just builds a stronger case against them should something happen. If nothing comes about it and it was done by some kid then so be it. By the looks of it the police shouldnt have to hard of a time finding them with their full names and website and all.

Anyways i'll shut up now and you can decide what you need to do :D

Some direct quotations from the blogs on their web site:

By Mickey on May 21, 2003:
"I have a narrowed my doctors down to a handful...I guess that is good for me and even better for some of my neighbors...as the medication appears to be working so my tongue is not as sharp as it usually is...
....
... the anti psychotic meds have thinned my blood...
....
If anyone of you would like to try me out...give me a ring and sign a waiver...my email is located on this page somewhere. Live blades, sticks, Bokken, Shinai...empty hands...hell...we can draw at twenty paces if you wish..but remember...Only one wins--as in life."

By Kim on March 7, 2003:
"I am diving my new DIR setup... heh me.... the DIR anti-christ going DIR. How scary is that! Amazing what love will do! I still remember some of the first things I said to Mickey when he PMed me in the channel that day... "I am NOT DIR and will never be DIR so you won't dive with me." Ok so he said he would anyway and that is moot... but now I am trying out the DIR harness setup on my pink Aluminum backplate. While we were setting it up it didn't feel so great... we will see. I am still a stroke at heart I suppose.... I am withholding judgement as we speak. I will update further later."

IMO these people should not be considered as official or even typical GUE or DIR representatives.

I'm really steping out to say this so here goes.

I would hate to see anyone leave scubaboard because of the actions of a few people. Just remember arguments online is not worth the effort. Scubaboard has always been a place where divers can come share things and get along nicely instead of the petty bickering that we see in other nameless lists/boards

I didn't see it on the site until you pointed it out but Tekdiveguy did e-mail me that he wanted to discuss the matter. We have been playing phone tag ever since.

I think what happened is when he responded in a thread with a GI quote some of us (I know I did) assumed that he was another quest guy...you know the drill..and some of us hammered him pretty good. He responded, and it went from there.

Probably just one of those stupid things that can happen when you can't see some ones face or hear the expression in their voice to help know where there comming from.

Either way, it would be a wast of time to make excuses for the way any of us behaved and talking (in full duplex) is probably a good idea.

Mike, I missed the original thread, but I have read enough of the rest to get the gist.

One of the many hats I wear (my closet causes an instant identity crisis with all of the varied costumes) is that of police officer. From that standpoint, I would have to caution you that the fact that this person has e-mailed actual death threats to you is evidence of a very disturbed mind.

If you dive in the same location with this person, it is possible that, given the opportunity, this person might act to harm you, possibly by sabotaging your gear.

Again, I did not see the post, so I would caution that: "If I ever see you, I'm gonna kill you!" is not the same in the eyes of the law as: "If I see you at the quarry, I will kill you!"

I don't wish to alarm you, but if the post falls into the latter category, I would see if I could get the local police to check it out. The attached charge would be: "Making a terroristic threat." or something similar in your state.

You do need to find out who you are dealing with, so that if they show up at your local dive site, you can be fore-warned.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

After seeing how this person(s) acts online gives me no desire to ever wish to meet them in person. Some people are just not worth the effort. MikeFerrara, I fail to see how 'good folks' will constantly incite arguents just for the pleasure, threaten people, and act like a wanna grow up to be a playground bully. The problem here is some people are unstable. If you talk/meet with them in their 'stable' moments they wil be ok to deal with, however meet them when they are not will result in much worse outcomes.

We have our hands full screening for threats and such, and do not try to moderate people for being without class. It doesn't take much thought to insult someone, nor does it take much courage when they can't answer either. Of course, they can always feel remorse and then edit their mean spirited remarks.

Well, I certainly don't know them very well so I'm not trying to provide a reference or anything. I just thought I'd post the fact that I met them for any one interested. Of course everybody should make there own decisions about who to avoid and why.

However, if every one remembers the thread where this all started was a little goofy to begin with. As I remember we were in the middle of some DIR related argument and his post led us to believe (and we assumed) he was one of the quest guys popping in to "bully". Some of us jumped him pretty good in the way we often do in those situations. He then responded and was banned and the thread pulled.

Immediately afterward he attempted to contact me. We played phone tag for a while and last week met in Florida.

As for the kind of posts made on rec.scuba...it isn't my style but from what little looking I've done there, I don't know what is joking around and what isn't.
