I have a buddy who purchased an old 80 AL tank. The tank was made in 1995 and only used once. Has the original 1995 VIP sticker on it. Never been hydro'd. From pics, it looks in good shape. Not sure if there is still air inside or if it is empty. I know if it is under pressure, getting a VIP should not be an issue. But what about hydro. If it missed its 2000 and 2005 hydro's, could he have issues passing hydro. Thanks for the help.

Probably not. It should be made of 6061 alloy.

could

No problem. It needs a hydro and a visual inspection sticker and it will be good to go. The visual is part of the hydro but most hydro facilities send out the cylinders and a viz sticker is not put on. The LDS will normally charge extra for the viz. The tank should be good to go.

Honestly, I'm not sure. These are the markings.

It's a Catalina tank. It's made of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy and unless it has been damaged by being gouged or dented, it's good to go.

Cool. Thanks

That cylinder should be fine. To answer the question you seemed to be phrasing there is no issue with having the tank go dormant from an inspection standpoint. Under used cylinders like that get put back into service after years all the time.

Very true

The problem will come in about 6 years, as many LDS' refuse to fill an AL tank that is 20 or more years old - but for now you should be fine - "missing" visual or hydro dates will not matter assuming the tank passes the latest one

Also sadly true. :shakehead:

Being a Catalina there is a good chance he can find shops that will fill it. The trouble comes when you're out of town, in need of a fill and wander into an aluminum phobic shop.
