You need duct tape on fingers & toes to keep your kit together...

You gear never completely dries out...

You don't have to post the "Dive Now, Work Later" bumper sticker at your desk 'cause the rest of the office already knows how you feel...

c'mon y'all!

You can use a smaller cylinder than anyone else and still get more bottom time...

You can do a California Kelp dive with a pair of Oakley's on...

The gear in the trunk is more valuable than your car...

You have more wetsuits than clothes...

Your fingers start to get webbed...

Guess I'm guilty of all of the above! :D

Your proud of the fact that the gear in your trunk is worth more than your car.

A-men to all of the above! (although I haven't been diving long enough to have to stick my gear together with duct tape, but that day will come, I'm sure... )

Just bought a "new" used car. Its chosen so it's big enough to hold tree to four divers + gear and not too new so I wonn't be too concerned about diving gear and dirty boots in the car. (So now I think the price of the gear and the car is about the same :)

You know your a diver when you dont need a scuba tank and get more bottom time than others with tanks.

>>>...watch the weather channels and all you look at is the coast line, and live in South Dakota.

... know what all those acronyms stand for...TSI Naui padi assc scuba rsd BAD and so on.

... know what a BAD dive is and been on one.

...drive past any body of water bigger than a bath tub and say "Been there Done that."

....When 12' tiger sharks come to you and role over so you can scratch the stomachs.

when you are diving under the following conditions:

1) the air temp is 20

2) the water temp is 35

3) the wind is blowing so hard waves are breaking over the
bow of a 45 foot dive boat and soaking everything and
everyone on the dive deck

4) the skipper of the dive boat wants everyone in the water
PDQ so he can get out of the howling wind

You know your a real diver when the airline workers knows you with out checking your ID.

You know your a real diver when you can goto sleep and drive to your favorite dive spot.

You know your a real diver when your more confie in the water than on land.

You know you're a real diver when everytime you see a ship you think why don't they just sink it, that would be a cool wreck dive.

use old regulator mouthpieces as pacifiers

Walk hunchbacked from schlepping tanks and bc's

Real swamp divers see every body of water (size doesn't matter) as a potential dive

first thought on pay day is ...." what new peice of dive gear do I need this week? "

....When all of your real good friends are also divers.

....You'll drive 9 hours from Dallas to Port Aransas for 1 day of diving

....your tan lines are where the shorty wetsuit left off

....you and your buddy are in a dive gear arms race.

You know you are a real diver when...

Your wetsuit is so repugnant that one can smell it 30 feet away and people are moving to safer ground.

or

While you are diving, the fish are trailing closely due to your wetsuit disentigrating.

Cheers :)

- (This one mostly for the ladies)
you rather go shopping for dive equipment than clothes and make up

- you get withdrawel symthoms if you don't get under pressure ever so often

- you first requirement for a new home is a place to clean and store your dive gear

- when all your stories start with: "Now, on this dive I once was on..."

You go outside at night and bring back-up flash lights...

You join ATA (Air Tanks Anonymous)...

You involuntarily do the Valsalva manuever when you take a shower or a bath...

You apply Antifog to your windsheild, rather than using defrost...

You stop your car to check how much air is in your tires... often!

You put your mask on just to get that "right perspective" on things...

You finally figure out that your chinos are being held up by your weight belt...

At the end of the day you signal the "OK" sign to your mate, instead of asking them how their day was...

They actually signal back...

And that's fine with the both of you...

When you come into a room you pop your hands to get your kid's attention...

You refer to the time between love making as a "surface interval"...

to make merry and light, for brethren tomorrow we dive!

:tease:

Glad to add some mirth to your day, Alison.

Oh yeah,

You know you're a diver…

When you keep telling people "Tanks a lot..." over and over again and again... till they puke, and you still think it’s funny!

You do a pre-drive check before heading out to work...

Then you do a three minute safety stop when you're ten minutes from home... (OK, the beer ain't exactly NitrOx, Chester, but it does have its benefits)

You have a pony gas tank tethered to your hood (tied, but not clipped)...

Your dive computer has more RAM than your PC...

You have removed your spare tire to make more room for "essential" dive equipment...

You stick impossibly close to your buddy in the mall...

You believe that you should both do a "Tired Shopper's Tow" just for drill...

You insist that you practice buddy breathing with your significant other... but without the regs...

All of a sudden beer and sex are not your only recreational activities…

Welcome, Huggy - love the nickname by the way!

You've come to the right place to ask all your questions and get direct and helpful answers. I can't help you myself as I don't know anything about diving in the US, but there are several divers on the boards who dive around CA and I'm sure you will get a response very soon.

It may help to post this as a new thread in either Introductions & Greets or New2Scuba (sorry LD, I tried to move the post but couldn't work out how to do it! Please teach me :))

Good luck with getting into scuba, I'm sure you'll love it and become as much of an addict as most of us are :p

Cheers, Huggy Ears

Alex, you live in an area where you can take one of the best classes in the world. Call LA County and ask about their SCUBA program.

your close brought a ;-( reminder of our missing One and Only, The Thunder from Down Under The Gasman. Has anyone heard from, seen or otherwise know the whereabouts of our humourous friend?

BTW HuggyBear welcome to the boards. Keep us posted on your journey learning to dive. If my  memory serves, LA county had the first organized SCUBA training program in the nation. A response I believe to numerous rescues that had to be performed once people started SCUBA diving. I think all programs came from that beginning.

jbd - Gasman is back, or at least he made a brief appearance in Introductions & Greets earlier... I expect we'll be seeing him around more often soon enough.

Rejoice! The Gasman Returneth....

Not the city, the county. Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation Department Underwater Program is you you need to contact. Their website is down for now when it comes back up, you'll find it at http://www.lascuba.com/.

Good luck.

Hey there HuggydOOd, I'm in San Diego. There are plenty of Sport Chalet's up your way that you can walk into to gain info on classes. They have plenty of schedules available. If you'd like to tell me where in LA you are, I can help you pinpoint the right location and even the instrutor. Always here to help dOOd, lemme know.

1. Removed the rod from your “J valve” and smashed the catchall holder on the tank strap.
2. Silicone glued the nose purge on your facemask because it kept leaking.
3. Thought you were styling because you had a horse collar BC with a new power inflator and dump valve.
4. Taped up your fin straps and wore your knife on the inside of your leg so kelp wouldn’t get caught.
5. Still have your well used double hose regulator.
6. Stopped using Voit shoe fins when USD came out with “Rocket Fins.” Also start using booties! :loopy:

You know you are a real diver when you show up for a dive, set out your gear and then realize you don't have any air.OOPs, was that embarrassing when I did that today. Lucky my LDS instructor was with me, nice guy he went back up to the dive shop and brought me a tank to use. Or when you walk down the boat ramp to wet your BC, slip and fall into the water (before in wetsuit of course), stand up and with a smile proclaim waters great, a little chill to it think wetsuits will be needed. Yep, did that today too. :)
