I am a start up freelance journalist looking to write for diving magazines and looking for some inside information on where to start, how to pitch and what kind of stories sell. If anyone has any information or written anything for a dive publication before, please share your experiences.

The basics are standard across the magazine publishing industry.

Examine and determine their style and format. They may even have a set of standards that they will send to you, maybe available on line.

Send them a package with copy and captioned digital images, along with everything else they use for their standard formatted articles.

Sit back and wait for the money to roll in.

If you are doing "travel" related stories, better be about some of their advertisers. Most magazines will lean towards that. Unfortunately, you are competing against some of their known writers who are buzzing around getting reduced rates or comped trips.

Being based in Japan might give you an advantage in some markets. Consider European publications that might find their way into hands of Euro workers who are stationed near your area. They might well run your story as they occasionaly run pieces for reasons other than pure marketing.

If you are writing about Cave Diving or Rebreathers, might want to look elsewhere than SDM.

Bikini suited divers usually are a big plus. Find ones that do not breathe much and have those large oval single-plate masks.
