We may spend a week in Key West at one of the hotels (Marriott,Days Inn or Ramada). Won't have a car. Does anyone have info. about shore diving from these hotels? Any regulations, restrictions? The closest dive shop to the hotel area to rent tanks? Thanks in advance.

There is no shore diving in KW or really any in reasonable shore diving in the Keys for the that matter.

kidsdream: Do you mean it's really poor diving, or that it is prohibited? Some hotels list scuba from the beach.

I don't know of any place that you can do a beach dive in the Keys.

There's really not many beaches in the keys either. They aren't natural, and they aren't what you'd expect of a nice beach unless you've been to the keys before.

Its not prohibited - it just sucks

Seriously, the reefs off the Keys tend to be, on average, 5 - 7 miles offshore - this is where you have to go to see reefs - you can snorkle just about anywhere in the Keys - the're islands - but what you will encounter is sand, and eel grass - no reefs. Same in Key Largo, Islamorada, Big Pine - you name it.

Just because you can (in your example of "snorkeling/scuba" off the beach in KW, the hotel mentioned it - bet they also say their res't food is delicious, too) does not mean you should.

Key West Beach Diving.
It simply does not exist.
Some cloudy water snorkling, YES!
Boats in the Keys.
Kayaks into the mangroves perhaps in 5' of water, that is about it.
If you want beach dives, come to Broward County.
Hope this helped.

The closest thing to shore diving in KW is at the beach at Fort Zachary Taylor..Will you see sea life? Probably, Is it like a reef dive? no, not at all. far from it!

There are some breakers made out of old coral boulders off of the "beach"..snorkeling will let you see any life that lives there (a few odd fish, once in a while a school of something passes through, or a lost ray swims by) I've seen a few people diving on the other side of the rocks on calm days, but in my experience, nothing overly awesome to see...if you're just looking to get wet, that's your option...You'd be better served taking a trip out with one of the operators...Captains Corner is one of the least expensive...

Enjoy!

Byouant1, Have you seen any live shells there (Conchs, whelks, etc.)?
