tropical fish database with pics and descriptions.

Anyone out there have a bookmarked favorite they want to share?

Working from your statement that you are seeking a tropical fish database with pics & descriptions rather than ID texts, quizzes or divers' photo galleries, the best one that I know of is Fish Base-->

http://www.fishbase.org/search.html?server=IFM-Kiel

This works great when you have some idea of the name of what you are looking for.

In the cases where you do not, go to their Fish Forum Identification section where you can get started just based on the fish's shape---->

Hope this is what you had in mind.

You can also go to the "Images" section of google and do a search on the fish. Do the common name first and then try the scientific name. But be warned, a google search often produces photos of fish that have been identified incorrectly by the photographer.

If you're interested in fish of the caribean and tropical western atlantic areas you might consider purchasing the Human DeLoach CD or the Reefnet CD. Both have excellent photos of fish. I find that the Reefnet CD displays better on my computer.

Both CDs allow you to base a search on physical characteristics of a fish (size, color, markings, etc.) if you don't know the name. I haven't found this feature to be particularly helpful, however. I get better results by determining what family the fish is in and browsing the entire family until I find the fish I am looking for.

The Human / DeLoach CD can be ordered directly from the non-profit organization that the authors founded:

www.reef.org.

Reefnet's Reef Series Volume 1 can be purchased from the developers/photographers:

www.reefnet.on.ca

A good, online fish quiz source is the Palm Beach County Reef Research Team at:

Thanks for the links guys...my "Dive Stuff" Folder is rapidly expanding. Going to have to make folders inside of it at this rate.

I was using the google method...but it seems a bit random somtimes.

The best part is that scubaboards normally come up in the top 5 hits whenever I do a search...figure that one out!
