I'm looking for a buddy to dive with at Dutch Springs, PA this summer. I live North Jersey and am a fairly new O.W. diver with 26 dives over the last year. Most of my dives have been in Key Largo, FL. Mostly looking to dive on weekends but might be able to take a day off during the week too. BTW, I have a 7mm O'Neill wetsuit with a 6.5mm hood that I haven't tried out yet..... will I be warm enough at Dutch Springs with this???

North East Scuba Supply usually has a group at Dutch most weekends. Give them a call. As for a 7mm, hopefully it is a "farmer John" and not a "steamer". Because of the cool start this summer the surface temps are still in the low 60's and the thermocline is still in the low 50's (around 35-40 feet). The Farmer John style with hood and gloves works very well at these temperatures.

Unfortunately, I cannot help in the immediate future because I will be diving in the Florida Keys for the next three weeks!

I am also a NNJ diver near Hoboken NJ. I work with the Hoboken Dive Center. I will be going to DS this simmer also. I will be in Mexico for the first half of August, but I will be available after that for the remainder of the summer. Just let me know.

scubabob123: My Girlfriend and I were at Dutch Springs this weekend for a few dives. The water was bad with a 7Mil on. Around 60 ft it was a little chilly. ;) If you need a buddy, let me know and if we are at Dutch Springs, you can always dive with us.

If you want to see some pics from this weekend, check out my web site.

What was the water temp at DS at 60 ft.? How was the vis?

Viz last weekend was about 30 ft. At the surface you could easily see the platforms, which is about 27-30 ft. I have seen the viz a lot better then that, but not bad.

At 30ft the temp was pretty nice. I cant remember the temp off hand. At 60 ft the temp was 57 degrees. With a 7 mil wetsuit, hood, gloves it is a little chilly.

I think the 2nd thermocline was at around 45-50 feet. I want to stay above that this weekend when possible. :)

Hi. I was at DS last weekend.
The water at 30-35 feet was somewhere in the mid 60's.
I was comfortable in 2-piece 7mm suit with no hood or gloves.
Below that, I added 5mm gloves and 7mm hood and was comfortable. Didn't go deeper that 67 feet- we recorded temperature in low 50's at that depth. Was much harder to stay cool on land than to stay warm in water!

Have fun!

I am always looking for a buddy to dive Dutch. I live in the Philadelphia area, and have done a bit of diving up there.

As far as the temps are concerned, they are not bad. I was down at 95 feet there about a month ago, and while the face was painfully cold, the bod was just fine in 7mm FJ & hood. The visibility, as always, varies depending on when you are there (read: weekdays rule, early Saturday is good, Sunday afternoon rots). The proliferation of zebra mussels (man, they multiply FAST) has done wonders to the clarity. And the water level this year is very good -- a good 8-10 feet higher than last year, and probably 4-5 feet higher than the year before. Some of the weekends are really crowded, but it's no so noticeable underwater, beacause at any given time, most of the folks in the place are either on land or getting in or out of the water.

Let me know if/when you are heading up there. My schedule is whacked out this summer, but I am still planning a few more trips up there between now and October.

Went to Dutch Springs for the first time last weekend (July 12-13). Went to get advanced and dry suit certification. Weather was incredible and the viz was very good.... probably 25 - 30 ft most of the time. Temp at surface was 70, but dropped to high 50's at about 20 feet. Below 50 ft the temp was 47!

Most divers were wearing 7mm farmer john suits with hood and gloves and nobody complained about being cold. In fact, for our shallow dives (25-30 ft) we dove without gloves or hoods and were very comvortable. The dry suit experience was very interesting... and warm.

Hey MikeNY,

I also went to DS last Saturday (dove with Hooked4life) and experienced some really great weather and decent dive conditions. We got down to about 60 ft. and you're right it was pretty chilly (but really only on my face). I was wearing a 7mm full suit, 7mm hood and 5mm gloves and had no problems with the cold. We did 2 dives with a 2hr. SI between dives.
Going to dive again with hooked4life on 7/27. Check out his website. He has taken some great pictures he has posted there.

Send an e-mail to Charles firtion at ghost.diver@verizon.net. Ask him to include you on his e-mail list for upcoming trips.

We are out at Dutch Springs all throughout the year and always welcome new divers to come along.

Charlie is a great source of info and a laugh a minute when not in the water. He is also a PADI/TDI-SDI instructor and runs boat trips out of Pt. Pleasant a few times a year.

Hey Diverjed,

I'm planning on diving this Saturday (7/26) with Hooked4Life. However, if plans change and it ends up happening on Sunday (due to weather, etc.) I'll let you know. :)

Thanks,

Yes, we will be diving at Dutch on Saturday. Normally we camp out overnight, but we may just dive Saturday. It looks like the weather will be OK.

I'm in the same boat as the original poster only with much less experience. I just finished my PADI OW at Dutch Springs. If anyone is willing to put up with doing some reasonably shallow dives with a newbie let me know. Also I could probably take a day off from work to go there on a weekday if anyone wants to do that.

Hi All. Anyone wanting to dive weekdays, give me a shout a day or so ahead of time - I work there, and get off at 4:00pm most days. That would give us at least enough time to get 1 dive in.
And we usually have a few people there for a Wednesday night dive (please email be before heading out Wed night - make sure the dive's still on)

Hey Dave,

We will definately have to hook up for an afternoon dive during the summer. I would like to bail from work around noon a couple of days this summer/fall to squeeze some dives in. I like to get a few other divers interested in this. No crowds, great parking spots, etc. Hopefully this crappy weather will give us a break soon!

If I can bail out of work someday in Early September, I would be interested in diving at DS during a week day. :)

Right now, there are two of us eyeballing Thursday the 11th.

Unfortunately, that's not a hard date to forget.

Keep it in mind. If plans firm up, we'll certainly post it here -- it would be good to meet some folks from here (the April gathering was bad timing for me).

Hey Guys,

I feel like I'm going to be real sick this Wednesday afternoon. Beautiful weather etc, etc, etc.

Who wants to join me in a couple of afternoon dives at D.S. Wednesday afternoon? Conditions should be great! First dive maybe around 2PM?

Come on. It's a short season here and water temp (surface) is around 80. Be brave... Just say no to work (Wednesday afternoon).

Too funny! Sorry - boss just called, he decided to take a ride down Weds & Thurs. Just my luck, when the weather cooperates, corporate decides they want to be entertained......:(

This is the worst season I can remember.... How has the viz been with all the rain? Let's hope for a sunny, dry, warm Sept. Keep posting dates, we'll all make it there someday... Wave if you are driving by the Norristown Exit of the PA Turnpike, my office looks out over the exchange.....

Jersey: The viz last weekend sucked!! It may have been 10-15 feet at best. To top it all off we barely got 2 dives in with the storms. Yeah I dont think we will see 30+ feet of viz anytime soon.

I wasn't working last summer and my buddy is a musician (only works nights), so last year after getting out OW we did a few weekday dives.

It was great!

You could park right next to the water, no matter where you were planning on going in, and visability was great. I'm sure that won't be the case now though with all the rain.

We went on Sunday and it was silt hell, probably the worst vis I've ever had 5 - 10 feet tops. My buddy went back yesterday and said it was even worse.

We'll probably be up there Saturday. Blue canopy probably on the grass right in front of the showers.

By the way where else do you all dive?

We're still rookies not ready for the Atlantic yet, but want to try some new locations. We were thinking of checking out some of the other quarries, Round Valley, and there's a train wreck in the river at the Deleware water gap just off 80.

I went out there today and it was pretty good. I would love to go back out Sunday but I can't. The vis was up to around 20-25Ft. but was getting silted up a little later today from all the divers. The water temp is really nice though... about 78F surface and 73F at 30ft. then you hit the 1st thermocline. We did our 2nd dive today without any gloves or hoods and were just fine for the whole dive.

I think my next trip out will be either the 20th or 21st (2 weeks from now). Let me know if you want to go then.
