I saw that some are already posting dates in the January thread for February so thought it was the perfect time to start the February thread.
I have a flight into CZM for Feb 15 staying for at least a week. I hope Jed is going to make this trip. Not sure where we will be staying but defiantly diving with Albatros Charters. This will be our first Carnival. We are looking forward to a great trip!

I have alway brought my camera to Cozumel. I would guess that 90% of the time, it never makes its way out of the suitcase. In all my trips to Cozumel, 99% of the pictures I have were taken by someone else. I hope this changes with our Carnival trip!

We will also be on Cozumel for our first Carnival this coming February; 8 nights at the Cozumel Palace beginning 2/12. My daughter (15) and I dive and my wife loves the creature comforts at the Palace (not that I complain much) and the proximity to the city and shopping. We missed Carnival by a week during our first trip to the island last year so we are very much looking forward to this year! Being so close to town, we should be able to easily enjoy the parades.
We're diving with BlueXTSea - they treated us so great last February for our first dive trip anywhere! Since then we've spent a week on Utila (whale sharks!) and a week at Turneffe Atoll (TIR and the Great Blue Hole) - but can't wait to return to Cozumel.
I usually fill two 2gig cards underwater; I'll have to get an extra card for the parades or force myself to take fewer shots while wet :D

You're going to enjoy diving with Sergio (either Sr or Jr). My wife and I have been using him exclusively for the past 5 years. If you do u/w photos, he'll give you pointers because he's a real pro at it. Surface interval lunch is a treat, too.

Hi! If your trying to stay at one the more fav spots you may have a hard time getting a room. That time of the season is very busy and this hotel may be booked because of Carnival. It's sometimes tough to get it last minute but I sure hope you can thats a great time to dive and have fun in town. There are certainly places to stay though.

Last year the night temps where approx. 18-19c. It has been that way nearly every year since I have been there. Now sometimes it was warmer for sure. When the norte blew it was cooler for sure. I did not bring a hoodie just shorts. I helped the economy again with bying a hoodie to keep me warm. My wife said she is bringing 2 this year. She gets cold very easy. I dont. During the day the ave temps where 24-28c when I was there last year and the years before in Feb. Again the day time is a little colder in Jan. usually is it not?
That's why I'm glad that the other side is opening up for more diving. When the west side is closed. I can handle the chilly weather, I dont like missing getting under water.
So I guess this year I will bring sweats and a hoodie just in case.

I'm going to try Dive Paradise I like fast boats, and diving my own profiles.
I'm not sure that jpomerantz was saying that Dive Paradise offers small, fast boats and the ability to dive your own profile.
I think this was more a general comment pointing out that different divers are looking for different things. Thus, in answer to the question whether there were any reasons not to dive with Dive Paradise, more information is needed about what it is you're looking for.
I haven't ever dived with Dive Paradise and I shouldn't speak for jpomerantz, but I think the point was more that they probably do not offer small boats, customized trips, flexible profiles, etc. and that many regulars here have favorite dive operators who do offer these features.

You are correct , I misunderstood, I don't like cattleboats,or having to end my dive with half

If you are on Marcelo's boat and get the forward starboard seat, lean against the buoy and enjoy the sunbed. The buoy's strategically placed.
If you go to Mr. Sancho's for surface interval, head back to the last little shop on the left and ask for Sergio. Give him my best and tell him you're a friend of mine (Sallye from Atlanta who dives with Aldora), and he'll fix you up with some great prices on little gifts to bring home.
And be sure to ask Angel to show you his jewelry on El Pescador. He makes some beautiful stuff. Almost free. ;)

It wasnt only the young Mexican boys I had to watch out for but all the old fat ba$tards drooling where a pain too once they had a few in 'em.

Me too!!!
Can't wait to get warm, dive and enjoy the last days of Carnival. Actually the list of what I can't wait to do in Cozumel goes on and on. Wish my husband could join me but I guess I will have to tough it out alone!

I will be there 2/15-2/22. This is my 4th trip solo, I prefer to travel with Jed but he can't always make it with his work schedule. I have lots of time off! I have made some good friends over the years and I dive everyday. Try it sometime!

Annlaur, that was a great list!
We are headed to Occidental Grand 2/5-2/12
We didn't book any specific diving days though. I heard enough good things about the onsite dive op to play it by ear.
Is weather.com accurate? I was just on there and read it's averaging 77ish on Coz right now.

It is so safe in Cozumel! I go out meet friends for a late dinner and walk back to the house alone and always feel secure. Jed worries about me when I go to NYC for the evening but never in Cozumel.

Good string guys--I've been lurking on this string as we get closer to our dates. Say hello to some Pacific Northwest coldwater divers diving Aldora 2/6 - 10 and maybe beyond. 6 from the Seattle Area and one Canadian (go ahead and make fun of Mikey). We are split between Hotel Coz and Aqua Safari. I hope to say hi to a few of you.

Oh, don't get me wrong... it's not the safety factor of being in Mexico that gets Jeff, it's jealousy! If Coz was covered in 2 feet of snow, he wouldn't care if I went or not.
But the sun, and the warm water, and the beaches, and the cold beer, and the ocean breezes... well, now he wants me to wait for a time that he can go too :dontknow:

Ze Abron, We are leaving on Sunday and I saw on underground weather that Wed will have a low of 50. I am not too worried, the forecasts usually call for rain. We were there in July and weather.com said a 60% chance of rain everyday. It rained once over night, it was sunny and hot the rest of the time.

We leave NM 6am Wed and just hope the weather here holds-up long enough to get us down there!
We were down for a week last November, and had some cloudy, rainy weather (turned out to be Hurricane Ida - who watches TV?), but they didn't close the harbor so we dived. One day we spent our SI floating in the water because it felt warmer than the air temp. Amazingly we only had one day of heavy current (which can be fun), and we were out there by ourselves most days. There was one day, and I'm not kidding, we saw 13 toadfish in two tanks. I think they liked the cloudy weather. The diving all week was great!
If this El Nino winter is going to give us a cool and cloudy Cozumel, then I'm going looking for toadfish!

Oh No!!! Delta cancelled our flight to Coz from Atlanta for tomorrow (Friday) morning. Best they are offerring is a flight 2 days later on Sunday :(:(
Everything else seems booked - I guess the storm delays somehow snowballed into the cancellation. And here I thought I was gonna escape the cold.
No problem with the flight from Newark to Atlanta, but no connection available. So much for Carnival, or most of it at least. I guess we will take what we can, fly on Sunday and lose two days.
Pelagicsal
February 12th, 2010, 07:16 AM
Qnapre,
Oh no! I just saw that ATL - CZM was cancelled for today. I am SO sorry!
Don't know if it is an option for you, but there's an afternoon flight Atlanta to Cancun. You could do the bag drag and ferry hop. Diving Cozumel from the Mayan riviera (http://www.aldora.com/fromcancun.htm) Link takes you to directions on how to do CUN to CZM.
Let me assure you, two days less is better than all days less. I was kicking around heading down for the week, but now I have oral surgery on Monday, so my trip is off - and the bill so far would pay for over a month's worth of dive days.
Have a great time. If you do all the Carnaval partying there is to do, you'll be laying low like a lizard drinking water.
Feliz Carnaval!!
judydivescoz
February 12th, 2010, 09:22 AM
Sorry to hear about your cancellation. I think I would take the Cancun option not to loose more time. Makes me a bit concerned as I am on the Delta fight from Atlanta on Monday. It looks like the flight is fairly full but with airlines you never know what they might do.
Have a great time, hope you get there soon.
judydivescoz
February 12th, 2010, 10:30 AM
I think my flight has been canceled!!
Just went on to Deltas web page and tried to book ATL to CZM for 2/15. Results were that there was no flight that day. Called Delta (20 min of busy signals but I am now a woman on a mission) finally got thru and they rep told me that the flight has not been canceled and is full. I am not sure to believe them. I hope I have a Cancun option.
Pelagicsal
February 12th, 2010, 02:05 PM
Judy-
Don't panic. Today's cancellation was due to weather. 650 DL flights out of Atlanta have been cancelled today.
Your Monday flight is full and showing normal departure time.
There are multiple Cancun flights out of Atlanta daily, so those options generally do exist.
I am so jealous.
judydivescoz
February 12th, 2010, 02:51 PM
Thanks...I heard the south is getting some snow, my husband is in Mississippi and just got 2 inches of snow this morning.
I am a little nervous because the flight does not show up as a flight that can be booked thru Delta or any other booking service. Delta insists that the flight is sold out and that is the reason. Airlines have not been know to be honest or forthcoming so its easy to become suspicious of almost anything they say. The good news is that Delta emailed conformation of a complementary upgrade to first class!
I don't know if I had to make the choice between oral surgery and diving in Cozumel I would have chosen the surgery. Hope it goes well.
Pelagicsal
February 12th, 2010, 03:10 PM
Being sold out, your flight is paid for already, so if I were you, I wouldn't give its cancellation another thought. Of course, I'm not you, so your mileage may vary. :D
Once they are sold out, Delta takes them off the reservations pages. On DL TravelNet, the flight is shown as regularly scheduled and full.
I would rather go to CZM than surgery, too, but I do like time to heal and be comfortable in the process. If I don't have to worry with rushing back to work, all the better, Flights got crazy- expensive early, so I figured it must be a sign.
I'll just have to do a 5-day CZM trip next month or wait out Roatan in April - and Cozumel this summer.
And yes, I am trying to convince myself, too!

We didn't think of the Cancun option in time and rebooked our flights for Sunday. Not sure if flights to Cancun were cancelled - I was told they pretty much closed the airport due to the snow. We had to fly out of Newburgh NY to do that; everything from NY to Atlanta on Delta was sold out for sunday morning. They wanted us to fly to Atlanta this morning and wait there until Sunday! Small consolation; first class to Coz from ATL. The sad part was that our flight to Coz this morning was scheduled to depart at 11:00 a.m. and the flights were cancelled preemptively due to the expected snow; none had fallen, not a flake, by 2:00 p.m.. 20 minutes to get Delta on the phone is far better than last night - i waited for over an hour.
Better 6 nights in Coz than nothing - and we gotta get away from the snow in NJ! One more day to wait, and hope nothing else goes wrong, lol

Did you fly from Newburgh to Cozumel??

Naw - I wish it was a direct flight. Newburgh to Atlanta Sunday at 7 am then Atlanta to Coz Sunday at 11 am. Since Newburgh is nearly a 2 hour drive, we head to the airport at 3 am. Nothing direct to Coz from NY/Newark except an occasional charter. Continental has a direct flight back from Coz to Newark but it alway seems too costly.
Sal, thanks for your kind thoughts. Hope all goes well for you on Monday - and at least traveling in April you won't have to worry about snow closing the airports (just high winds, tornados - I guess ya never know). Utila in April last year was perfect with plentiful whale sharks to be seen. We'll be in Puerto Adventuras taking the Carvern course in the cenotes first week of April.
One more day to wait...

We missed the dinner tonite at Casa Denis. Havent been feeling well, and ended up not making the dinner. Sorry to all that went...although it was so windy out with the Norte blowing in, not sure how many made it.
You were missed & I hope you're feeling better today. There were 6 of us -- a nice evening of shared photos, funny stories, knowledge of cameras & Cozumel. Catch ya next time, OK?

I am finally home from my week in Cozumel. Weather in Charlotte caused us to totally miss our flight in LGA. The result was that we needed to find a hotel with shuttle in NYC...no notice and rebook for today at NOON.. ugh. Better than the several days other people who missed connections were looking at.
Cozumel was so fun! What beautiful diving and wildlife to be seen.. Can't wait to go back. It was also really great meeting and diving with Gene and his family!

OK - so we have now had to cancel our trip entirely. After heading to a non-local airport this morning at 3:30 am to make our re-scheduled flight we were told at our scheduled flight time of 7:00 am that the crew of the plane had gotten in late from a flight last night, and that due to FAA crew rest regulations, the plane could not fly until 8:45 am. Of course, this would not get us to our connection in Atlanta in time, nor could any alternate flight to Atlanta be found, nor could any combination of flights to Cozumel be put together prior to 2/16 at midnight. Even Cancun as an option was unavailable today. Meanwhile I'm out over $200 in carfare (back and forth) to get to a flight that should have been shown as delayed last night, not to mention the money lost on the hotel, etc.
Thank you soooo much Delta for not informing your passengers of an inevitable delay until flight time. I hope everyone enjoys Carnival, and we will have to try to rebook for next year :(

Thank you Deborah. Yes, finally feeling better. Started getting sick a couple days before leaving, and it just continued to build up. Today feeling much better, in fact good enough to dive Maricaibo. Will make sure to feel better next year!!

Can you rebook a different week? Carnival is nice but a week in Cozumel is hard to delay an entire year!
I would complain to Delta, they should have notified you prior to you leaving your home in NJ. Perhaps you can get some of your loss covered by some sort of credit for a future flight. I would try the squeaky wheel method!
I live about 10 minutes for Stewart, I was happy to hear it may now be possible to fly to Cozumel from so close to home. The 7AM flight must be fairly new, I thought the only flight to ATL was in the afternoon.
I am flying Delta from LGA in the morning, hope all goes well.
Get to Cozumel soon!

Delta has of course refunded the airfare, and I have a complaint pending about the late notification, so we will see. The flight showed on time online right up to the time we left home, and until flight time on the airport screen. I've yet to confirm what I've lost on the hotel (Palace, booked and paid for 8 nights), but i think it is limited to two nights. I hope your plans go off without a hitch - have a great time!
Not to worry - we have to put off rebooking Coz to next year only because our remaining time slots for vacation in 2010 are already filled. We are heading to Puerto Adventuras with another family the last week of March where we will be taking the cavern course in the cenotes, and in August spending 8 nights at the Little Cayman Beach Resort. Not long to wait for another great trip, with still another on the horizon for the summer, but no opportunity to rebook Coz for now. I'll simply plan for February next year, and focus on our upcoming dives in the cenotes and on Bloody Bay wall. And, of course seethe with frustration for a few days and be a very squeaky wheel, lol. I may also consider avoiding Atlanta and Delta next time, and trying Continental connecting through Texas (don't recall offhand if it is Dallas or Houston).
