dive con help

Hi all,

Just after a little help,i'm thinking of going for my dive con but i have heard different of several different course requirments,
one is saying that the med dive is included in the course ( as you get the manual with the dive con pack )
the other is saying that the med dive is extra and the manual is put in to let you know that you have to do the course,

so any thoughts on this would be great !!

Med dive? I'm not quite sure I understand what that is,but then it has been more than 2yrs since I made Dive Con, so things may have changed since then, or maybe it was called by another name when I went through. Probably the best way to find out is to simply ask your Dive Control Specialist Instructor, as they must be up on the current standards for the level they teach. The prerequisite requirements I'm familiar with is you must have OW, Stress & Rescue or equivalent, be current on CPR & First Aid, Have an O2 course & a minimum of 60 dives.

Thoughts:

I have no idea what a "med dive" is.

The class depends almost entirely on what the instructor wants to put in to it. It's possible to "pass" with nothing more than some studying and some skills demonstrations, and various bits and pieces of water skills to prove that you're in reasonable shape and probably won't drown, and teaching a SCUBA Skills update and (I beleive) a Snorkeling class. You can ask your instructor for the actual requirements, but it's nothing that can't be done with a little studying and work.

OTOH, depending on what your instructor teaches and demands from you and how much time he puts into it, it's also possible for it to be the best SCUBA class you'll ever take, and give you tons of experience assisting with classes and dives, and teach you skills that will make you a much better diver (all the stuff that should have been covered in depth in OW, but wasn't).

I completed the Divecon cert at the beginning of the year. I have no idea what a med dive is.
Our shop does have some additional requirements for all their professionals such as current cpr training, O2 provider, equipment certification, and a couple of other things that are relevant to working as a Divecon.

Thanks for all the help so far, as for what med dive is....the front cover sums it up as " in-field emergency treatment of diving injuries for the dive professional " isbn number 0-929905-05-9
There is also a part in the ssi dive con course standards that you need to do this course to remain current prior to renewing,
I guess it must be diffrent rules for different country's
It looks like a great course so i am looking foward to doing it, its just the confusion of getting the manual from ssi in the dive con pack and then being told that the med course is extra and the manual is " just put in there " ?????

Oh, OK you're talking about what we have in the US, called the Stress & Rescue course (or maybe a little more advanced). It is a wonderful course, even if you never take any others. It really brings about a new dimension of awareness underwater. In the US the Stress & Rescue course is a prerequisite for the Dive Con course.

Interesting. I don't see that course listed on SSI's website, SSI Scuba Schools International: Continuing Education - OWD -> Specialties -> AOWD -> Stress & Rescue -> Master Diver (http://www.divessi.com/continue).
I did find the book by googling the ISDN number. Date of publication is 1991. Is that correct? This sounds more like a shop requirement to me, not that that would be bad. It would be interesting to know. I have never heard that course standards could be different from country to country.

yes, the book is wrote by Kathy Work R.N, and was reprinted in '93 and '95,
the course is a requirement according to the ssi training standards effective date 01/01/08, revised date 01/01/08.

The Following is straight out of the Australian SSI Standards
Med Dive Course Standards
1. The knowledge and skills to be covered in the Med Dive course are as provided in Dive Rescue’s Med Dive Instructor manual
and student text
2. The prerequisite to attend the Med Dive course is SSI Stress & Rescue certification or equivalent following is straight from the SSI Australian Standards
3. The pass mark for the fi nal exam is 80%
4. Med Dive certification is a professional level on-site-accident management programme and only needs to be completed once in your professional diving career.

I have spoken to SSI Australia and they told me that:
1. The Med Dive Course is an Australian only course
2. Its is put in the kit to remind Dive Con candidates that they must complete the Med Dive course before they renew their membership (at the end of their first year of being a Dive Con)
3. The kit is put into the Dive con student kit Free of Charge
Therefore once you have completed your Dive Con Course you have until you renew your Dive Con status to complete the Med Dive Course.
We currently have two Dive Con crossover students almost finished their course and four people about to start a Dive Con course with what we have been informed we will be incorporating the Med Dive course into the current price of the Dive Con course.
