Hello Mares team, I have a question about your Icon HD, I know that you will have available soon air integration for the icon hd and that it is nitrox ready witch is great but will it stop there or do you plan to upgrade software to accept trimix and or heliox in the future, my reason for asking is that the uwatec galileo sol will as i understand upgrade to be trimix compatible. I intend to buy a new dive computer soon and was wondering how much the icon HD will grow with me as i progress in my diving.
Thanks for you info

Joao,
You present a good question. The answer in short is the Icon HD has the capacity for "Firmware" upgrades in the future. These will be available through the Mares website as they are developed.
As of today, I can't tell you if trimix or heliox is in the cards, although I wouldn't be surprised if we offer it at a later date. Sorry to not have a specific answer, but our computer engineers are keeping future development under tight wraps.
Thanks for asking!

as long as you have connected it up in the correct sequence, there shouldn't really be a problem......try again, open the program, and try to input your details into the 'info' section.....menu/computer/info....I think......I also thought nothing was happening, but in fact it was me that wasn't doing anything in the program.......I hope that makes sense, 'cos it does in my head!

Thanks for the reply, but the issue is that Windows doesn't recognize that the Icon has been connected via USB. Therefore, even with the Icon connected to the PC and charging via the USB cable, the Dive Manager program's "Computer" menus are unavailable (grayed out). There is also no "USB" screen on the Icon when connected in this manner, so no part of the system (Icon or PC) thinks that there is a data connection in progress.

I'm really considering this computer. Your web site states that air integration is "coming" this spring. Will there be an additional fee for the software update and how much will the transmitter(s) cost? Also, when will we be able to interact with an online demo of how the air integration will function? Your current demo is fantastic but I'd like to be able to read the manual as well. Is it downloadable? (I couldn't find it)
Thanks in advance and sorry for the thread hijack.

Hi Guys, thanks for the helpful hints. I have tried 6 separate PCs and 3 flavors of Windows (XP, Vista and 7) and come to the conclusion that this is a hardware issue. None of the PCs recognize the Icon HD as a new device, regardless of the driver. The Icon HD charges via the PC's USB port, but there is no USB data activity at all. I have manually installed the Mares COM driver and now the Dive software on the PC complains that there's nothing on COM5. I have changed the COM port with not effect. This is definitely not a software or driver issue - guess I just got a dud unit. BTW, the AC brick that came with the unit was also nonfunctional but Mares swapped out for a replacement brick and that worked to get the unit charging off AC.
Can't wait to get this unit connected to my PC for dive log and image transfers!

Hi Zak,
Thanks for the pointer - yes, I have browsed every resource I could find at Mares. By the way, the site is http://software.mares.com and the Icon HD is not included in their software support web site- it merely points to an e-mail address. I have exchanged several mails with Mares Icon HD tech support and none of them seem to realize that this is a hardware issue as they keep telling me to manually install the USB driver. The problem is that the device is not detected by Windows so no driver will work if the device isn't even seen by Windows.
I'm fully aware that this is a new product and that there are still bugs and user interface issues to be ironed out. I'm OK with that. The hardware, on the other hand, should be fully baked before release. If mine isn't defective, then there's something else going wrong here.
BTW, I'm a User Interface Designer by trade, and hope that many of my UI suggestions that have been shared with Mares will be implemented as they can definitely make this awesome product even better!

Very cool, indeed! Please keep us informed as I'll be in the first line to get some. There's another company with Icon-ready maps, but they have a small glitch in their online ordering system whereby a hefty shipping fee is added for online purchases of digital maps. I'm sure they'll fix that issue soon, but it will still be great to have more support for this cool feature of the Icon HD.

Kudos to Mares and Steve (the sales manager)! Now I just need to do more diving and get some photos and maps transferred over ;-)

That's Great!
The problem that I had was that the USB cable was connected to power before the clip was attached to the Icon. This shorted out the USB port. Is it critical that the clip be connected to the Icon before the cable is plugged in on the other end.
Anyway, the initial firmware that came on my Icon caused it to loose about 5% of it's power each day on standby. The new firmware seems to loose less than 1% each 5 days- much better! The unit still drains the built-in rechargeable battery far faster that other computers, but it is now acceptable given that it can be quickly and easily recharged.
I only have 1 dive on the unit as it's now winter and too cold to dive often here in Florida. I think the computer is rated for about 4 typical dives per charge. I bought a solar USB charger and with it, I can charge the computer between dives just by putting it out in the sun :-)
Best of luck!
Hopefully Mares will soon release the air integration option so that I can discontinue use of the hose-mounted tank pressure gauge that I had to buy when I started using the Icon.

I am considering either the Icon HD or the UWATEC Galileo Luna and have to admit I am intrigued by the color display (even though I ask myself how effective a color display will be at depth!) It seems there are not too many computers out there that supports us Mac users!

Greg,
As of today the Icon HD is not Mac compatible. Yes you Mac users unfortunately are not the higher percentage. It would be great if we could support both and maybe we will down the road.
As for the color display! Wow!!! at depth it is even better. We are talking truly about a High Definition LCD screen. Not a simple backlit, pixelated computer.
Good luck with your shopping!

While the IconHD looks to be a nice piece of kit, 320x240 in a 2.7" screen is not HD. It's the default resolution for PDAs for years. Not that this isn't more than enough to fit the bill...

America see this http://www.mares.com/download_maps.php?region=USA (http://www.mares.com/download_maps.php?region=USA) We will continue to offer new maps on a day to day basis, so feel free to check back now and again. In addition to these free maps, you can visit our map making partner http://arttomedia.com/site/Products.aspx?catid=2&subcatid=36 (http://arttomedia.com/site/Products.aspx?catid=2&subcatid=36) for a broader selection to be downloaded for a nominal fee. Oh well.
BTW, to the guy asking about Mac compatibility - just install a virtualized Windows OS (Parallels, etc.) or run Boot Camp (dual boot). I do the latter and have no trouble at all. While not as good as pure Mac compatibility, it does allow us "Light Side" computer users to have full Icon HD compatibility on our Macs.

I was wondering if you could share some insight for us early adopters how the Air integration will take place. Will it be as simple as a new firmware and wireless transmitter that we will need to update to the ICON and pair with the transmitter? Or will we need to have a complete replacement unit. Curiosity is getting the best of me and hope that it ships soon. I updated from a NEMO AIR and miss the air integration. Spring spans a few months.... any way of getting a rough date? or be part of a pilot? I am diving in the caymen's for a week and would welcome the chance to test.

FYI, the Icon HD will be air integrated, late 1st qtr 2010. We are offering an upgrade program to the consumer if they want to participate. If the customer purchases an Icon HD now, and would like air integration later, we will offer them a brand new computer and transmitter for the cost of the transmitter.
Hi I dont' have an exact date. I know they are diving / testing some units now. We were hoping to have the integrated unit in production and distribution by April, however it is looking like it may be a couple of more months. Could be sooner, but my experience is leading me to think a little later.
FYI, when the transmitter is available, an over the counter exchange should be made, if the dealer has a computer in stock
You take your computer or send it in to an authorized dealer. If the have the new computer in stock you pay the extra price for the air integration (which is unkown yet) and you get a new computer with the air integration.
I thought since you can upgrade the firmware on these HD's that you could just recieve a transmitter and do an update and be set but from what Zak is saying you have to swap it out.

471, Thanks for posting the quotes. While the computer has the capacity to be updated via download, the current production units do not have the needed hardware to read the air pressure. To speed up time, and convenience to the customer we are offering the new computer upgrade. Otherwise, all units would have to be sent in, opened up, refurbished, and shipped back. I think the current plan works best for the customer.

Hi Zak (or anybody else)
I have the Mares Icon HD. So far I really like the computer. A couple of small things - like not being able to see avg before downloading data to the PC. But nothing serious.
I have a major issue. Or well, probably not major for some of you, but it is important information I need on a dive. The last couple of days we have had very clod waters. And today on the 4 dives we did I compared the temp that the Icon reports comapred to temps on other computers of other divers on the boat.
There was a drastic difference between the temp the Icon reported compared to the temps of the other computers.
Most of the other computers ranged between 11C - 12C, while the Icon reported 15.6C.
This is a massive difference in temp. Has anybody noticed anything, or perhaps is there something wrong with my unit? Perhaps a software issue that needs to be sorted out?
If anybody has any ideas or suggestions, please could you help me out.

Jakez,
I recommend you taking it to your authorized dealer and have them take a look at it with you. This is always the 1st course of action any customer should do with a product that is not functioning as it should. I have not heard of any other temperature discrepancies to date. You could also update the firmware on the Icon via the divelog manager. There is a tab at the top of the dive manager screen that will allow you to do this.
Make sure you have the latest divemanager software located at www.mares.com (http://www.mares.com).
Hope this helps.

How much fun is that computer. I spent a week in the Cayman's and enjoyed the computer. Excellent presentation of data, you can quickly access the data you need. Great Dive computer! With anything there was a couple of observations... this one was a nice problem to have! On most of my dives with 100' viz, I was getting a glare and either had to angle the computer or use the shadow from my head to read the display... what a nice problem. I believe there is some films you can apply to the screen to resolve this. The other nice to have would be in the main Log book screen when doing repetitive dives would be to show the Surface Interval after dives, not the SI showing on the DESAT menu. Less math is better always.
Over all... It is a wonderful computer and was very impressed with how it performs. I have some cold water dives scheduled in May and look forward to trying it in that environment. I had a few other observations about how the Dive Organizer works and will work with my Dive shop on those.
Zak please pass on my complements to the developers... They have produced a great product.

Are you still having problems. It is more than likely you just don't have a good connection between cord and back of computer. You really need to make sure those 4 prongs are resting in the female receptacles. The light on the 120v adapter should show red when plugged in and unit is charging properly.
Let me know how it goes.

You really need to make sure those 4 prongs are resting in the female receptacles. The light on the 120v adapter should show red when plugged in and unit is charging properly.
Let me know how it goes.
Thanks,
Hello, Mr. Ohara
When I connect to power
I can see the battery Icon showing in red but not recharging
keep showing 0%
I think, not a adapter problem or USB cable
Thanks

Your local dive store will be able to help you with this. Take in your connector and proof of purchase. They may have to order you a replacement but this should be a warranty issue, assuming you purchased from an authorized Mares dealer network. You can take this part # with you so they have something to reference if needed.
I have a Icon HD that I recently bought at my LDS along with some other gear.
Back home, I started the Icon HD and browsed around, including in the logbook, where I found one entry; a dive to 60,3 meters, dive time 29 minutes and a VERY fast accent rate (99 m/min). I asked the LDS about the logged dive and he told me that this is a test chamber "dive" and that it will "disappear" when I have more than 100 hours of dive (max limit of the unit). The LDS also told me that when I'm going to get a gas integrated unit, this new Icon HD will also have a test "dive" logged.
I have also installed the Dive Organizer (why is the underlaying database software in Italian ???), but I cannot find a way to remove the existing test dive.
Is this normal ? Is there any way for me to get a "clean slate" ?
Also, I have ordered a Abyss 42, but got it with a "old" hose (the old kind - not a SuperFlex), and have really thought about how this configuration is at all possible.
My LDS told me that the distributor send the regulator with a wrong hose, but how can this configuration be possible at all ? I mean, Mares introduced the SuperFlex hose with the Abyss 42 about 2 years ago so I guess that the old configuration should not be possible anymore, right ?

Jakob

Jakob, We test all computers prior to shipping. There is no way around this, and the dive history cannot be "wiped" clean. It is true when you upgrade, you will receive a new computer and it will have a test dive on it as well. Note: the computers aren't actually test dove in by human, it is all simulated.
As to your Abyss, I cannot explain the hose configuration. I suggest you work this out with your retailer. They should be able to help you.

Hello, Mr. Ohara
I I exchanged to new Icon HD package from my local dealer
When I opened the box, there is no "screen protector film" on screen
so, I asked to dealer but answer was "I don't Know"
Also, When I connect to Dive organizer
firmware was old version so, I updated to new firmware by myself
It seems like a first time manufactured model
I was so happy when I got Icon HD first time
First package was perfect without battery charging issue (We already discussed about that)
firmware was new and screen protector was already on screen
Please, let me know where can I contact
solving this issue and I want to order extra screen protector
I cannot trust that local dealer anymore

Greg,
As of today the Icon HD is not Mac compatible.
Best regards,
What do you mean, 'not supported'? Can I at least copy some diving site maps on it? I can live without the dive log...

1st post here :)
I bought an Icon HD ~1 week ago and have used it for 14 dives so far - I'm very pleased with it and I greatly look forward to the air-integrated version.
The display will presumably be modified to show tank data. Can I enter a plea on behalf of those of us whose eyesight is not what it once was? The 2 main numbers, time remaining and depth, are very easy to read but the other data and the button symbols at the bottom of the screen are very small and difficult to read underwater. I'm not so bothered about the button symbols as I'll get used to those, but I'd like to see the max depth figure a bit bigger and when the tank data is shown that will certainly need to be a reasonable size.
Maybe the new display could be made customisable so we can set our own preferences?

The dive organizer software at this juncture does not communicate with MAC OS. Therefor you will not be able to use Mac for transfering images or Maps.
Thank you for asking.

I just purchased the ICON and I have had a bit of a problem getting it to charge, does it matter which USB port on the charger I pug the cord into? One is marked "for others" and the other is marked "ipod"? The manual doesn't say.
Also the dive shop told me that the ICON was MAC compatible, upon getting it home I see that it not, will their be any software updates that will make it MAC compatible?

Having just spent a few hours working through this issue, I thought I'd add my own comments/tips (using Windows XP SP3): (1) let the unit charge for a bit (not sure if required, but I had no luck until it did); (2) go to mares.com, select download, software, dive organizer (doesn't say this is the icon pc interface, but it is); (3) now load the cd beta version of dive organizer just to get access to the driver - files will be automatically installed in a different subdirectory than the downloaded version; (4) search or browse your computer for the file "usbser-mares" - likely located under c:/program files/mares/dive organizer/drivers; (5) plug the icon into the usb -- if windows automatically asks where to find the software, browse/direct it to the driver subdirectory you just located - if windows doesn't ask where to find the software, then go to the start menu, select control panel, printers and other hardware, on the top left menu select "add hardware", indicate you've already connected the hardware, select the usb device (likely first item listed, with a small yellow indicator over it), and you should now be able to browse/direct to the driver subdirectory. The icon computer should now be recognized by Windows, the serial #, etc. loaded into the dive organizer program, and access granted to the "computer" menu actions.

Hello Mares guys/gals I purchased the Icon HD and I gotta say I like it,
The PC logbook to upload to is definitely lacking. Not even a place to add dive buddies. When will a better version be available?
Have any updates been issued?
Any chance that you will have a up-loadable web interface similar to Uemis computers website?
When will more maps be available?

tardmaster,
Earlier I talked to Mares and have found that the dive maps should be formatted like this:
Image format: JPG
Resolution: 320x200 pixels
Colors: 18-24 bit
By using this resolution the image will fit perfectly into the image space between the black "footer" and the "header".
On a personal note; On the few maps I have found (not created for the Icon, though) I have increased the Contrast and colour Saturation to give better underwater reading experience.

Why are there so many basic fields in Dive Organiser that are greyed out?

Also, why is there no feature to print out the logbook?

Hi,
I apologize for the delayed response, and I'm only able to partially answer as I'm not in a position to pull up the screen to see. The short answer to some of your questions is, at this point the Icon HD does not support some of the air integreated features / fields. As soon as the transmitter is available we will have these options available. The rest, I'll have to pull up the organizer to see what you are referring to.

Can anyone provide some real-world examples of the kind of battery life one should expect with this thing?
How long does it take to recharge?
Also, is it necessary to recharge from a PC (via USB), or is there a stand-alone recharger? I'm planning a dive trip to the end of the earth, and although I'm pretty sure there will be electricity there, I do not expect to have a computer available.
Thanks.

Hi, I believe the transmitter will be complete by end of 2010. There is still some testing to be done. It is possible to be available sooner, but I'd rather be conservative with my estimation.
Icon can be charged via USB, Stand alone wall plug, unit comes with many converters to be compatible with most power sources. Generally speaking if you have electricty, you will find a way to charge.

I just got back from bonne terre and talked to the Chicago Rep for Mares and August 2010 is when the transmitter will be available. You will take your computer to any authorized dealer and pay the price difference between the Icon HD without transmitter and Icon HD with transmitter. Most transmitters alone cost between $300-$400 so I would say that this is the price we will be paying for the upgrade. They will be giving us a brand new computer and transmitter which is nice for us who have had ours for awhile and might have some scratches that we did not want. :D

Scubastore.com is a European store. If they are an Authorized Dealer, then you will most likely need to send your computer to Europe in the even it needs to be serviced. If you search the boards there are plenty of horror stories from people who purchased gear from that site and then were not able to have it warrantied locally, in any decent amount of time, or at all in some cases.
I wouldn't advise purchasing from them.

Hi All,
I dove with my Icon HD a week ago and noticed that the compass was WAY off. I check all of the "Declination" settings and nothing seems to get "North" to point anywhere near "North."
After a quick call to my friendly local Mares rep (thanks Steve!), I was pointed to a "secret" calibration screen. So for any of you with compass' that don't seem right, go to the "Set computer" menu, choose "Calibration" and enter the super-secure passcode of "1234". You'll see a graphic of the Icon HD. With the Icon HD on a flat surface, keep the screen level and rotate it in-place counter-clockwise twice, then press "Back". Voila- "North" should be a lot closer to "North."

Regarding power supplies for the Icon HD and battery charge duration - I picked up a Solio Mag solar charger. Solio Mag web page (http://www.solio.com/charger/solio-charger-magnesium.html). The unit has 3 solar panels to collect the sun and charge its internal LiIon battery. It then uses that built-in battery to recharge just about anything; phone, iPod, Icon HD, etc... I take it along with me just in case and it works great at topping off the Icon while away from any other terrestrial power source. Picked up mine from a guy on eBay for a great price.
In fact, Hurricane season is upon us here in South Florida and I just hope that this thing won't come in handy ;)

Have you downloaded the "dive manager" software from Mares website? If so have you then plugged in your Icon to dive manager to ensure you have the most recent firmware? This is plug and play if you have the dive manager downloaded first. It should prompt you into updating the Icon if it's not the most recent. This should fix any bug issues.
Let me know if this does not work.

Yes it does. My question is a little late as I ordered mine the night before. Should have it in hand by the weekend. Going diving in Phuket next week for a couple of days. Pretty pumped about the computer, it being my first.
My only other concern now, is someone mentioned (which I didnt read until I purchased it), that you have to take the dive computer back to the point of sale for warranty work. Is this true? I ordered mine online, plus when my work assignment is done Im moving back to Canada. I would have figured that any Mares distributor would take it in and send it to a technician for you. I didnt buy it here in Thailand as its like double the price you can get it elsewhere.

Hi all, Mares is a worldwide company with a worldwide warranty policy. If you have any warranty issues within the next two years, any authorized Mares dealer can help you. Note: you must have a receipt of purchase, and have purchased the product first hand from an authorized Mares dealer. Warranties do not extend to 2nd hand purchases ie: used. So, you will not have to take it / send it back to the place of original purchase, unless it was a non Mares dealer. Let's look at the positive side and assume / hope you don't have to send it to anyone! :)
Hope you enjoy!

Ok, so I had my Icon out for the first time in Phuket for 3 dives. I was pretty happy with it over all, my only concern is the computer seemed to sort of reset its self before my 3rd dive. I didnt realize it. For the first 2 dives I would turn it on right before or during suiting up. I would jump into the water and make sure its still on the right setting before my descent. Before the 3rd dive I turned it to the dive mode before I suited up, got suited up, and jumped in. Before I descended I checked the computer and it was on the desat screen, so I just switched it to the dive mode and descended. When I returned to the surface and got out, I went to fill out my dive log. Thats when I noticed that something funny happened. The date had changed from Nov 18th to Nov 16th and the time had jumped by 6 hours. So I guess it didnt reset itself completely, but it thru off the date and time. So I had no way of knowing if the desat time and no fly time was accurate. My computer was showing 13hrs for desat and no fly, but my brother inlaws was showing 16hrs and our dives were pretty much the same. So I have no idea what happened or whether how accurate the desat time was, if that was reset or not.
The other thing we noticed, and I have read on here somewhere was the temp was out between the Icon and my inlaws computer by 3 degrees underwater. The surface temp was the same as one anothers. But I was wondering, depending on where the sensor is, maybe its detecting my body heat a little bit or something? And we only check one anothers computers.

Wow! Resetting is not good. I know this is a stupid question, but is there any chance you could have manually reset it during your dive interval? When I first got mine, I was often flipping through screens getting the feel of it while blowing down some excess nitrogen. (so it would have been possible for me to do that)
I have gone down with my icon on one wrist and my D9 on my opposite wrist to compare. The icon usually reads about 1-2 degrees warmer....or the D9 could be reading 1-2 degrees colder? There is often a difference of 1 foot on the depth gauges at about 70 feet, but I hear that is common among different dive computers.
Liking the icon more and more though. Very intuitive iPhone-like screen is a big plus for me.

Same problem here. Worked fine, but after the update, nothing happens when I plug it it....acts as if nothing is plugged in at all.
Went to Mares site and there is no online support?
OK...finally got my computer to recognize it.
I had to uninstall DiveOrganizer, then uninstall "Windows Drivers Package, Mares (usbser) Icon HD".
Then re-installed DiveOrganizer which reloads the drivers package. The re-installed drivers do NOT seem to be new drivers, but I had to uninstall them for it to work.
Don't know if it helps, but I am using a Quad Core I-7 with 6gb ram with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

I am running Windows 7 and I was able to download and install.
Good news. The height field on the diver tab/database is finally working and allowing ft/in input and displays correctly. Version number showing up correctly as well. I also see a few cosmetic improvements. Still a number of bugs left to work on.
It has a choice under Computer to install a Drake interface but it will not install after reboot and keeps asking for install when clicked on under computer tab again and again. Connection (com3) is still working and allows the options under computer. So, I am not sure what the Drake interface is suppose to accomplish.

Naboo.
The Drak interface is for our "Puck" model computers. If you are only using Icon HD, then Drak becomes irrelevant. If you had the Drak hardware, the driver and usability would auto download. I hope this makes sense.

Hi, We just released a new version 2.5 beta. Have you tried this one? Also if you have a previous version, it may be hanging up trying to overwrite. If this is the case, delete previous version from your PC and then try the new download. Let me know if you find this works for you.
Thanks,

Hi Zak,
This was a clean machine, so no previous version installed.
What is the purpose of the DAN parts of Dive Organiser. I know that DAN collect data from divers, but there does not appear to be a means of transmitting the data to DAN?

Dear Mares
After searching and trying out various advise posted on you support site and on this forum I have conceded that I will never be able to link my Icon HD to my computer.
I am certain or hope that you are doing everything possible to resolve the problem but I certainly would not launch a product into the market unless I have tested all aspects of the product. Especially if the product is a safety device.
Also you have certain firmware updates on you site that is of no use to me due to the above.
In addition I have noticed that the device goes into deco long before any of the other divers using other brands.
So I tested it on 2 dives with my SUUNTO. The Icon went into dec mode and SUUNTO still had ample time.
As a part time dive instructor and dive leader I look like a fool.
Also, your dive times as displayed after the dive and the logged times do not agree and for wherever reason there is a minute difference.
Maybe all this is been corrected with your firmware update but due to the USB connection problem I will never know.
I have now put my Icon into deep storage and have gone back to my SUUNTO.
Regards
Samer Kovacs

Just ordered my HD, can't wait to play with it in Fiji. Air integration will be a must when it's available but I do have a question.
Has anyone found a bungee style mount for the HD? I'd like to get away from the watch strap style. I checked with deep sea supply and they don't make one for it.

Well just got it finally and I'm so impressed. Had a few issues getting my laptop and the icon talking but got it resolved from the posts here. Thanks
Now that I have it in my hands I see how difficult it would be for someone to come up with a bungee mount. There's an accessory idea for you Zak! In the meantime a few suggestions, the next wrist unit should have a small attachement point for a wrist bungee or lanyard. I do not trust watch type pins or the band. Last thing I wish to deal with is a lost computer. I'll be looking for ways to add security to the watch band.
On the software side, it would be nice if we could change the units separate of each other. Living alongside the US we are faced with a lot of mixed standards. For example I like my computer's depth to be in feet but the temp in Celcius. I can't have those as a combo.
Looking forward to AI

Tried to download the Dive Organizer on a friend's Windows Vista. I'm a Mac person. Anyway, apparently his malware protection software blocked the download so I'm still stuck with an early build that doesn't let MacDive talk to the ICON.
A few questions:
Can I send the ICON back to you to have your tech people do the firmware upgrade? I tried my LDS/Mares dealer (who will remain unnamed) but after a month they still hadn't been able to do it.
If so, assuming you had it by Monday or Tuesday, could you have it back to me by the end of the week? Going to Bonaire 1/27/2011.
Thinking of buying a new or used ICON HD online. Would the same upgrade policy apply when the AI model comes out? Would I have to go through the dealer or could I do directly through Mares in Florida?
Thanks in advance

2nd question, a 2nd hand owner can upgrade their Icon HD with air integration when available. Note: The computer may be upgraded only one time regardless of how many owners.

Thanks Zak. So if I pick up a unit online I can participate in the swap when it becomes available. Will this have to be done through a dive shop or can I swap it out directly through Mares?
Reason I ask, is that the LDS should be happy to swap out the unit I brought from them but might be reluctant to handle a unit purchased elsewhere...and understandably so.

January 13th, 2011, 05:15 PM
I have followed these forums for years - but have never registered. As such, this is my first post of a simple "question."
In advance, I apologize if this information is available somewhere else. I have searched this forum for updated information on the release date for the elusive transmitter for the Mares Icon HD. Like others, I purchased this unit with the understanding that the air integration (i.e. the release of the transmitter) would occur in "Summer 2009". Then "Spring 2010." Then "Autumn 2010."
I visited the Mares website today and found that it will be available "from spring 2011."
Respectfully, I bought this unit as opposed to the OC1, based on the representation by a sales agent (for Mares) that the transmitter would be rolling out soon (Summer 2009"), information confirmed by the company's own website. I am huge fan of Oceanic computers (as I have owned a good number of them over the years). This is my first Mares product.
Question: Other than "it will be released when it is ready" can anyone (such as Zak) give us better idea if this is actually going to happen this year? And, when?

Jim,
We will generally not handle upgrades directly with the consumer. Maybe under rare circumstances will this occur. Any purchases of Mares products should go through a local retailer. I understand your concern about where you purchased your Icon. I would not worry too much as there is an incentive for the authorized Mares Dealer to handle the upgrade. We understand there is a bit of work involved in managing the upgrade process. I hope this helps.

Oh...let's gossip here. :eyebrow: Zak will reel us back in if we get too far off base. What have you heard?
I think it would be cool if the thermometer for temp readings were on the AI unit and not on the wrist mount. I get higher temp readings than others on the dive and I think it is because it is registering my body heat.

Oh, let's! ...with the proviso that EVERYTHING we chatter about is just chatter.
I had heard the big thing will be communication, unit to unit, and boat to unit. The former kinda makes sense. If you can read your buddy's Air supply, why couldn't you pass messages along like, "look at this," "where the %%#$ are you? and "Danger, Will Robinson!" As far as the latter, an optional ultrasonic beacon, hung off the boat could steer us in and spare the embarrassment of surfacing next to the wrong boat.
Again just chatter, but sure would make an attractive package now that easy to read computers like the Cobalt and that Swiss DC are shipping.

Ok, I got a chance to try out my Icon in the pool :depressed: only tonight and have a few questions. I could not enter the map mode, was this disabled because I was only in 13 feet of water? Secondly related to dive organizer download. I was able to do the download from the Icon but even though I have the HD set for imperial units, the organizer software only shows in Meters/ Celsius. I could not find anywhere in the organizer settings where to change this, where do I find it?

Sleepr. Did you download the latest dive organizer from the website, or did you upload from the computer or a disc? If you did any of the latter, I suggest you delete them from your add/remove manager section of your PC. Then go to Mares.com and download the latest dive organizer from our website. Then connect your Icon HD and run a firmware update. This will ensure that your organizer and Icon are running the latest updates. I believe this will solve your issues.
I haven't heard of any issues with accessing the maps, as you should be able to do this at any depth. If updating the above does not allow this functionality, I would take it to your dealer for further assistance.
I hope this helps.

Hey Zak!
Hoping you can help with this...I had updated my Icon HD to the latest firmware in the fall, and just downloaded the new Dive Organizer.
However, the Dive Organizer software doesn't seem to be recognizing that the Icon is plugged into my computer USB now, so I'm unable to download my logbook, etc.
With the Dive Organizer running, my ICON has the "PC" screen up with the USB symbol indicating it's connecting to the computer. However in the D.O. software under the ICON HD menu, none of the menu options such as Download Logbook, Upload maps, Format Flash, Firmware update are selectable. Only the Interface Settings option is selectable.
When I click on that, it asks me to activate "Drak Drivers" and then to reboot the computer. Even when I do so, and restart the Dive Organizer, it still doesn't seem to be picking up the Icon.
Any idea what else I can do here to resolve this?
Thanks!

Any comment/input relative to my simple post of Jan. 13?
Perhaps you could supply Mares' official definition of "Spring". In the US, I believe the first day of Spring is March 20 and the first day of Summer is June 21.
If you go to Mares main web site (not the HD Icon site) and drill down to "wrist computers" under their products tabs, you will find the unit. You will note that Mares represents that the unit is air integrated. [It is the first pictotogram.]
Only when you click on "Details and Tech Info" does Mares state the "upgrade" will be available "from spring 2011."
Again, I think it is fair to assume you have divers/customers that are buying a unit based on a representation that it is "air integrated" unit or at least it will be sometime in "from spring 2011" - much like I and others did in 2009.
Finally, I have noticed that the pricing has slipped $200 to $300 on the unit at the major on-line retailers.
So - in addition to a realistic timing of the release of the transmitter/new unit - what is the expected cost of the transmitter?
SpartanLaw

I too wondered if there was any update on when AI unit might be available (I am currently considering this unit, the Galileo Sol, and the Uemis Zurich) and want to know if it is worth waiting.
Also, with the Air Integrated models are you going to be able to monitor multiple recievers?

Spartan - Thanks. Back in 2009, I only asked the retailers - who were only parroting what was told to them.
Relative to your other unit suggestions, I have been wet with the Sol (as a buddy owns one). Nice unit. We also just got our hands on u-Zurich. Although I have not dove with it yet, the screen is "real" easy to read and navigate. [As I have actually communicated with the uZ folks (by e-mail) and spoken with states-side representative, I have some personal concerns about product support. It does NOT have a compass, although that issue probably deserves its own discussion. It is supposedly getting a Trimix upgrade this year.]
You should look at the Oceanic VT3. No color - but otherwise a very solid computer. [Most of my students end up with a Oceanic - so I am a big fan.] Go OC1 if you want the compass - but understand it has a small computer "face". If you want color (really sweet color) and do not mind a hose/console style computer, look at the new Atomic Cobalt. A friend picked one up before his Bonaire trip and he returned extremely happy with the unit.
Relative to the Icon, the unit is real nice. It has room for improvement and could be "great" (notwithstanding the AI issue). Like you, I am just looking for a straight answer.
I am beginning to think that it is not a "technical issue" but a "intellectual property issue." Think about it.
Does Mares even produce/market a "wireless (or hoseless) air integrated" dive computer? Perhaps Mares does not want to pay licensing/royalty fees.... ??
That would be a great piece of information for you (and I and others).
As stated in my first post, this is my first Mares product (in the last 10 years). [I may have owned a wetsuit and maybe a set of fins or a mask many years ago.]

Arrgggh. This is what happens when I begin to "think" (i.e. speculate). Following my post, I asked Mr. Google "mares patent air integration computer" and he said:
"The omission of a gas-integration transmitter facility on the Icon HD is due to be fixed early this year, as soon as patent-holders are satisfied, with an Internet upgrade for the wrist unit." [Emphasis added.]
This was taken from an archived article on Divernet. Obviously, I do not know the author's source.
We know that the issue will not be corrected with an internet upgrade, as Mares has already stated that current owners will have to turn in our old units for a new one and "pay for the transmitter." - But the comment about "patent-holders" does make you think that Mares itself has no idea when the transmitter will be released. In sum, go ask our lawyers......

Geezr . . . thanks for the info . . . with regard to the OC1, how does it look under water (i.e. can you see the information pretty easily)? One of my concernse was my ability to see my computer in low visiblity conditions (like a wreck dive or quarry). I actually looked at that but it seemed like I could get more features via the three computers I was looking at. That said, I missed that the U-zurich did not have a compass. That is a bummer . . . I REALLY liked the OLED display on that.
I am really looking for a wrist computer on which I can monitor my air, my buddy's air (more than one would be awesome). I liked the dive planning and maps on the Icon, but if they cannot monitor a buddy's air, I will likely look for something else. Plus, I have a trip to Maui in March and would like to have something in place before then.

Thanks. In all respect, who did you communicate with? A retailer? Someone employed by Mares? Do you mind sharing his/her contact information?
The "answer" you were provided by the representative that "it will be Mar/Apr before it is out" is yet another non-conclusive statement that equates to "the wireless AI upgrade will be available on some uncertain date after April 2011." Really not an answer. Does that mean "Autumn 2012"? [Remember the promise of "Autumn 2010"?]
If there is a issue with licensing the technology, I would really love to know it (which could add years to the release). I am beginning to suspect that is the true reason as it appears Zak has been maintaining "radio silence" on this issue.
Spartan -
I wish I could be more helpful - but it depends on a few factors. In really bad visibility (like some of our Texas lakes in the summer), I can barely see anything. It would not matter if I had London's Big Ben strapped to my wrist. The best way to compare is to go into your local dive center that carries them and just strap them on and see how your own eyes adjust to the screen. The OC1 is about the same screen size as the Atom (if you are familiar with that unit). The VT3 is bigger (obviously). I am 50 and wear contacts for "close to 20/20 vision" and I have no issues reading the VT3 screen size at "normal reading distance." I have to hold the OC1 a bit closer.
[For the record, I do not own either the VT3 or OC1. I own a bunch of Oceanics, including a couple of VTPros (which is the predecessor to the VT3). A number of my students own the VT3 - so I am very familiar with their operation both in and out of the water.]
Relative to the Icon, it does have nice displays (i.e. big numbers) - but so does the Sol and the unit from uZurich.
[OT: Also compare compass modes - if that is a feature that interests you. Some you will find clearly superior to others.....]

I should have read your 'entire' post before responding.
The dive maps on the Icon are a nonstarter at this juncture. [Just ask.] "Dive planning" on the Icon is no different than any other good computer. In sum - in my opinion - these "features" are not something that you should really base a purchase decision.
I would have to look it up again - but I think the Oceanics allow for more than one buddy. Even this feature is not all that it is marketed to be -- as no matter which unit you buy, you have to be real close to your buddy before you can pick up his signal. When I say "real close", I mean real close - as in "just show me your gauge and I can read it myself close." Do not get me wrong, it is cool - but the range is less than what is advertised. [Heck - some of the wireless AI units on the market lose connection between the wrist unit and the tank transmitter by simply extending your arm for an extended period of time.]
Relative to the digital compasses on the available units presently on the market, I just not that impressed. Perhaps I am old school, but I like my old fashion "analog" unit. In addition, with any wrist mounted compass, digital or otherwise, I have to cross one arm to the fully extended other arm (to create a right-angle). This is not comfortable to me (personally) - as much as having both arms extended (or elbows on the chest) and the compass nestled in the cup of both of my palms. [Navigating with the new Atomic - because it is a console computer - would be easier for me.]
Maui will be fun (and a long way from the quarry - like our Blue Lagoon in Huntsville). With any purchase decision, give consideration to what you really need. Your cave diver buddies would tell you to "keep it simple, stu--d." I am not a fan of cave diving, but I think they got it right.

Hi all, Not radio silence, I've simply been away. I am completely underwater with work, and unfortunately not diving or checking in here daily.
If you were to go back through some of my previous posts it would have answered at least a couple of questions. I'll try to do my best although I have to be brief so I apologize in advance.
The best answer for a date of arrival is Spring, We are hoping to have in March or April, but I will not promise as we have already been late as it is.
I cannot speak to patent law, as this is confidential information.
I can speak to the fact that it will be available one way or another.
I do not know where our tech received his info re: multiple gas readings. I am going to try and get an update from Mares HQ re: this capability. I will post as soon as I know.
The transmitter is in testing phase ie: in water
Tooling is built
Once proven to be reliable, we go into production. Since all other factors of production are complete, we should be able to produce quite quickly.
We are very shortly releasing a firmware update 2.0 which will outline some of the AI capacities.. The info I have is not easily postable on this forum, but I will try to find a way around it.
I hope this helps to answer your questions. I apologize for not responding sooner, I just have to prioritize my time. I will try to keep up with you all more promptly.

Hi Zak, in your earlier posts you suggest that the AI upgrade will be on a 'return and replace' basis. Yet in your latest AI update you suggest that the latest firmware will outline some of the AI's capabilities.
Why show these capabilities if the current hardware is incompatible ?
Can you recomfirm the upgrade procedure for those of us who have been waiting with baited breaths.
Also if you have any contacts in Europe can you ask for euro release 'targets' (at least the US site publishes target release dates - we get nothing !!! Hmmm - I could have sworn Mares was Italian.

Gareth,
I am not a software engineer, so I can't answer with certainty, however I believe when writing an update or upgrade everything possible should be included for future developments. The only reason the current Icon computers already in use will not accept A/I is because they do not have a physical piece of hardware to register the air signal. Otherwise nothing changes with the exception of tweaks and upgrades from a firmware update.
The Euro target dates for release will be the same time frame as the U.S. release. We are all waiting for the same thing. As production begins, the initial quantities will be divided regionally hopefully equitably and or by demand. Some markets do not demand air integration as enthusiastically as others.. (U.S.) ;) At any rate they should be available in most countries within a week or so of each other. Not taking into account shipping time from factory to distribution center to retailer...
I hope this helps. And yes Mares is most definitely Italian, but also quite global.. :)

Best,
Zak,
Final I found somebody got the same problem with me, one of the prongs of the USB interface for my Mares icon HD also be broken. Because I got the computer from abroad with internet, I have to pay for the spare part to the local dealer, and I also got one more for backup, in fact, it's really easy to be broken. The clip is really hard, when I tried to amount the clip, I have to pull up the part with prongs very strongly, but the clip is very thin, with first sight it looks like very easy to be broken, so sometimes the prongs will touch the back of the dive computer, after several times, the prong is broken at last. Why Mares not to use a device like a traditional clips? just like this one I attached herewith. I think with this kind of clips device the USB interface will be much easier to be amounted and it's very easy to check if the prongs at the right position. Could you send this message to the person who in charge of the developing? maybe they have a very good reason to use a device like the one now used, but I don't think it's easy to use in some sides. I really want to say in my side the Mares icon HD is a really nice dive computer, but if the USB interface can be amounted much more easily, it will be much better.
Best regards.

I guess if there is more completed then you can tell us it is still possible, but to get First run manufacturing, QA, shipping to distributors, advertising and so on completed in the next 2 or 3 months would be a big feat.

Because I purchased it USED (someone got very tired of waiting for the transmitter to be released), will I still be eligible for the AI upgraded model? Hi Zak/Everyone,
Looks like the long wait may be coming to an end (AI Hippee - I might eventually be able to diagnose how my air consumstion always plummits from 100 - 50 bar (230 - 100 same as everyone else ?)).
One question somebody out there might know the answer to - I've just upgrade the icon to version 2 and now all my logged dives have a red trace line in them. I've checked the new manual but it doesn't say what this line is ??? (I know there's going to be a stupidly obvious answer - just not awake this morning. Possibly saturation level ???)

Hi Gareth,
the red line is the temperature. Unfortunately the scaling is not adapted to the temperature range so in most cases it seems to be a flat line. Only if there are bigger differences in temp you will see a 'curve'. I hope they will implement an automatically adaption to the min/max temp /may be +/- 5 °C), to make temp course more clearer.
Also they didn't integrate the temp curve into the dive Organizer. It would be nice to have the curve in chart too.

I like this computer more and more, it's growing on me. People were rude and called it my HD TV but now they swim over to read it because they cannot work out what their own computers are saying, (or even read their own computers). Just a few queries though...
1. Can anybody point me to a description of the tissue compartments used by Icon HD? And what the red and green colours signify? And why the bars rise and fall with no apparent logical connection to depth and time? It looks very interesting if only it meant something. And thank you to those above who explained what the red line in the profile was, temperature, how obvious, why didn't I think of that? And why is it not in the manual? And why is it not present in DiveOrganiser?
2. Firmware v2 is a significant improvement, thank you Mares, I like it.
3. Can DiveOrganiser please acknowledge DAN Asia Pacific, it only recognises Europe and USA for some reason?
4. It is nearly perfect, when it has integrated air it might approach perefect. But when?

I've reinstalled the Dive Organizer, and the same thing happened to me. I imported the backup file, but when I connect the icon, everythng gets re-downloaded and duplicated.
I'm guessing that with the reinstall/upgrade the db loses info on what has been downloaded.
Maybe you should start a new thread, I'm sure the programmers will see it.
It's not that complicated if you haven't changed dive info on the computer.

I have bought a Mares Icon in January in Spain. I used it for the first time two weeks ago. I was just surprised that before to use it it took me 36 hours !!! To fully charge it, no kidding. I had charged it completely in january and then left in its box for 4 months since I have had no occasion to dive in between.
On wednesday 18th of may I rechecked the computer since I had a dive cruise week-end to prepare. The computer refused to switch on! When I plugged it in with my computer, it switched on and then switched off as soon as it was disconnected. I finally updated the software, and it seemed to be ok, fully charged and switched on and off normally.
I went to this dive cruise, and on the second dive it switched off during the dive! So I have had to make deco based on tables, for all the other dives of the week end, so cool, thank MARES JUST ADD WATER!
Anyway, I tried to plug it in and it switched on, just did not log the last dive. I took it for the next dive and it was ok, but then, the following dive, same problem, switched off during the dive.
Now, I have bought it in spain, but i'm living in Singapore right now, so could please mares contact me in order to organize a quick exchange of the computer ? I do not intend to wait too long for it since the dive season is starting for me. Thanks

I somehow don't thing that the warranty says the device will stay charged for 5 (five) months!?
The battery of any device is formed after an initial couple of charge - discharge cycles.
Turn of the power saving feature, and charge the device fully, then let it sit and fiddle with it unitl the battery runs out. Charge it again fully, and then see how long the charge lasts. Declared battery charge is 6-7 dives (4-5 actually).

Back on the boat, I plugged it in with power and after a little while it switched on again, showing battery level 92%. It did not logged the dive, so I could no more count on it for the remaining dives. On the third dive I took it back with me without problem but on the fourth dive it switched off during the dive again. WITHOUT ANY CONTACT INFORMATION, so how can I contact them now? Huh ? Any other brilliant idea ? In my first post I just asked for someone from Mares to contact me since it is the only place where I can see someone from Mares.... To bad they don't care about customers once the sale is done...

Of the top of my head: Distributors - Sales Network - Mares - just add water (http://www.mares.com/dealers.php?region=us&cat=distributors&area=northamerica&country=US&state=FLORIDA)

Hi, I'm sorry to hear you are having issues with your computer. Mares lists all of our distribution networks around the world on our website as shown by the previoius poster. The normal course of action for any warranty repair or replacement is to use the dealer network in place. With your receipt you should be able to take it to any authorized Mares dealer around the world and they should be able to help you. If they are unwilling, I would contact the store you purchased it from. I would think they will try to correct the issue in a timely manner? If that doesn't work, then contact the nearest Mares distributor to you. However I highly recommend trying the first two course of actions prior.
Thank you,
Zak

The battery of any device is formed after an initial couple of charge - discharge cycles.
Turn of the power saving feature, and charge the device fully, then let it sit and fiddle with it unitl the battery runs out. Charge it again fully, and then see how long the charge lasts. Declared battery charge is 6-7 dives (4-5 actually).
G
The battery in the IconHD is a Litium Ion battery. These batteries don't build any type of memory. They put out full voltage with a tiny drop in amps as the battery discharges. They do have a proper long term storage requirement, and that is to store the battery at around half charge. If the battery is allowed to drop below a certain voltage, which im unsure on the specs of the icon's battery, but the lItium Ion batteries I use in Rc racing, can't drop below 1.2 volts per cell. If this happens they won't accept a charge afterwards. Luckily, most devices that use Litium Ion batteries have a voltage cutoff that will shut it down so it won't drain the battery past is minimum voltage. This could be the problem with the battery in cfz's Icon. If the battery was stored with low voltage to begin with, then the voltage may have decayed to a point that ruined the battery.

HI, quick question:
I think I shorted out my USB port to...is the only solution to switch for a new unit? Or is there a way to fix it? If you can only switch for a new one, how did you do that? How much did it cost? Thanks!

Hello All,
Just wondering how long it has been taking everyone to have their old Icon HD switched out with the air integrated one? My dive shop said it would only take a week but now we are 3 weeks in. I called, but they just said they would give me a call when it comes in.
I live in Chicago. The dive shop said they would be sending the computer to New York for the change out.
Couple of other questions;
Does Mares copy over the log onto the new computer?
Is this a brand new computer or do they add new parts to the old one?
just anxious to play with the new one before the next trip,

Your log or settings do not get transferred over. It is a whole new computer as the internal hardware to allow for the air integration is different. Mine took about 2 weeks for the turnaround, however the dive shop I dealt with spoke with the Mares rep directly to confirm they had stock of the new unit.
There is a procedure the dive shop has to go through before the new unit can be shipped, perhaps they have delayed doing this.

Just used my icon hd (non AI, can't be upgraded) for the first time. Battery was at 97%. I did a 1 hour dive max depth 60 ft. avd depth 30 feet. Afterwrds, battery was 93%. I don't see battery life being an issue at all, as I don't ever see a time when I would be able to get this thing anywhere near even 50% without having more than eneough time to recharge. I have an Oceanic Atom1 that eats batteries for lunch, and they are somewhat hard to find unless you are close to a Radio Shack.

My issue with the battery use is that the Icon AI uses 4-5% battery even when asleep. Practically it means it has to be plugged in all the time when not diving. This may be less of an issue with the non AI one as it does not have to send a signal to the tank module. Does your battery run down when the Icon is not used?

I found my non AI Icon fine in Fiji when I just plugged it in overnight after diving. I'm heading out for a liveaboard trip next month, and am prepared to plug it in over the lunch hour if necessary but will see how it does fully charged for the first day of 5 dives a day on one charge. I think someone mentioned the lithium battery in it needs a full charge cycle a few times before it holds a charge longer.

Yes I've noticed that there is a battery drain when not in use. It seems to be 2-3% the first couple of days, and then slows down after that. I haven't owned it long enough to see what kind of drain I get on the shelf long term. I do agree with you, it's kind of a pain in the neck, but it's one more thing I will put on my checklist before a trip. Plug this thing in and make sure it's fully charged. Having said that, I was amazed that it only drained 4% after an hour of diving.
The problem I have with my Atom1 is that being a watch, it drains the battery constantly. It needs a new battery religiously every 3 months. Since I don't use it as a watch, I take the battery out. But I have still ended up with a dead battery, and I still feel like I need to always keep a spare, but the Atom1 is now my second backup, so it's not really such an issue now.

2-3 % is about half of the asleep drain we found in our AI units. If you leave the battery off charger it could deep discharge, which is not good for a lithium ion battery. Leaving it on the charger all the time, I'm not sure it that's good for it as well. The manual is not detailed at all and does not mention this problem.

For what it's worth, I've noticed that the battery drain on the shelf actually stops at 93%. So it appears to be a characteristic of the battery instead of the computer. Once it gets to 93%, there is no further drain on the battery on the non ai model while sitting on the shelf.

Be carefull! Even if a battery isn't connected to any device you will have a drain, and connected in your IconHd you have the drain definitely. So if you wait to long for recharging may be the LiIon cell may be killed by the deep discharging (<2 Volts). My Icon HD shows a drain to 40-50% during a period (between 2 holiday trips) of 6 month. So I prefer to check the device from time to time to check charge status and recharge it if needed.
I don't know why your comp shows always this 93% value, but don't believe it. My Icon shows in "AboutIconHD" item the longest divetime for 59 minutes, although there are a lot of dives in log much longer than 60 minutes. I tried to fix the fault by refreshing the firmware but that hasn't any success. It is a little bit strange because other Icon HD devices with the same firmware don't show this fault.

Do you have the newer AI Net Ready units? 50% drain over 6 months is pretty good as I was seeing a 4-5% drop per day in my Net Ready units.

You are correct sir. It seems I wasn't updating my display, just leaving it on the screen where it shows battery percentage. When I went to another screen and back, I was at 80%. Looks like something I will need to keep an eye on. Thanks.

I don't have the AI version, so I guess with the air integrated version you will have more drain, because the device periodically looks for the transmitter. But 4 - 5 % per day is to much. May be there is less drain if you lock the device using the last menu item. Also mares changed the firmware in the newer transmitter to reduce drain. As posted in another forum the bad thing is, now you can't pair the transmitter without tank :( because it need's at least 15 bars pressure, but pairing stays :D until you deletes it manually in you Icon HD.

I had the latest firmware 3.04 and I thought I paired it after the firmware update without the tank, but I could be wrong. I no longer have it. Another user confirmed 5% asleep use as well. For a device that's shut down it's very high and really needs to be plugged in all the time or you run the risk of forgetting about it and deep discharging the battery.

Do you hear about the replacing of the transmitters? In Germany a lot of users wretched the drain of the transmitter and also the drain of the icon device itself. With old firmware version the transmitter always tried to establish a connection to the icon. So both icon (if placed near) and transmitters batteries drain fast. Because it is not possible to perform a firmware update for the transmitter at home Mares offers a replacement with a new transmitter with a new firmware that avoids the drain. But this firmware no longer allows to pair the NetReady without tank. At least 15 bars are needed to activate the transmitter.

how you can check transmitter version to find out if you need to replace it

You can't identify. May be you can ask your reseller to check the transmitters serial. Only Mares knows with what number the serial of the "new" transmitters starts.
The upgrade of the transponder software was posted at the 19.10.2011 on the Just-add-friends forum. So if you got your device earlier, you might have an old transmitter.

I'm waiting too! Now 8 weeks to replace the old Icon for the NetReady version ....:depressed:
Maybe it wasn't just an update of the transmitter firmware ???
Perhaps I should be happy to get an improved hardware that works properly. :dontknow:

I changed my receiver in the shop on Wednesday. The receiver differes from the previous one in that the new one has lettering (CE certification, S/N) on the round rim (bottom side).
I know it can't be paired unless pressurized anymore, and I will be testing it this weekend.

Got the transmitter changed for the updated one today. You need a pressure to pair and check. Seems like it takes some time for the Icon to pick up the pressure. Eventually it gets there.
Just returned from Egypt with the Icon. Beware to dry extra carefully when you charge the device. It seems to shortcut and drain the Icon if just a little bit wet in the cracks between the pins.

I just returned from a great weekend of dives. The transmitter worked flawlessly.
As said previously, pairing with the new reciever only under pressure, and it takes a couple of seconds for the transmitter to re/send the tank pressure so it looks the battery wil last a long, long time.

I have just moved from windows to a MAC and have installed the software from the Mares site, followed the instructions and when I sync the icon with the DiversDiary it says that the connection is unstable and then I get a error, with not other codes. Anyone else who is using a MAC (Lion OS) and ICON with Firmware 3.04. Any help would be great!

I am and it does that from time to time. Just click OK with the unstable message, then if it still can't see your HD then restart Diverdiary. Try again. For me I just keep unplugging my usb cable, trying again and then it just works.
