OK, I just love my Suunto SK7 compass, but I really hate the strap. Try to get it on wearing dry gloves or 3 finger mittens and you’ll see what I mean. :(

Some of the DIR guys use bungee shock cord to attach the compass to their wrist. Quick & easy, but it looks very ugly. :(

I also had experience with shock cord coming undone under water, so I did not want to go that route.

Solution came in the form of:
- 1” (25 mm) wide elastic ribbon
- High quality contact adhesive (I used Bostik 2402)
- Optionally: stitching

First, remove the plastic wrist band from the Suunto compass (you have to remove the rubber grommet in the strap first).
Second: put two loops of ribbon through the compass.
Third: glue the ribbon together over a distance of about 20 mm (3/4”).

Follow the instructions that came with the glue. If you do not trust your bond, then ask someone to stich the bands together. Don't go diving with this compass if you're not certain that the bond will hold. :nono: Don't say I didn't warn you!

Voila: you have a ‘low-drag’ and professionally looking compass strap.

Have fun.

I like that idea. Good job!
I used bungee cord on mine, works well but you need to straighten the cords after donning.

Great idea!!
Though I came with a different solution a couple of days ago :-)
I haven't tried it in a water yet, but I do hope that it'll hold well.... :-)

I don't like velcro and water mixing, but hey - it works for the leftover parts of a camband, right? I've also defended it on my soft weight pockets, but you'd need nothing shy of a bulldozer to rip those suckers open.

I hope it works for you. I wonder if the velcro watch band is more "DIR" or less... I know there was some debate on bungeed instrumentation, saying you should use the straps because they can double as an emergency wrist seal...

First thing I did with my Sk7 was ditch the strap. What exactly was Suunto thinking when they decided to go with that strap!!

I did the bungee thing, but as never totally happy with that setup.

I'm going to give this a go!

thanks; jbm
