Hello,
Had anyone hear of an underwater metal detector that is afforable for the average Rec./Tech. diver. My buddy has searched the web a bit but his search has turned up empty! Any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated...thanks

Depends on your definition of affordable. Thye seem to run $200-$300 more than a comparable non diving metal detector. You are probably talking about $650-$900 or so to purchase a new one.

Fisher's 1280 Aquanaut is probably as inexpensive as it gets and it will run around $650.

I did a quick search and found several sites. My only experience has only been with a borrowed Fisher and it was not entirely satisfactory. The area we were in had an extensive amount of iron in the surruonding rock and the area was also apparently a popular spot to throw beer cans overboard. We found so many targets it was imposisble to find what we were looking for. :(

Go to Kellyco.com for a lot of info. Ask for their sales newspaper to be sent to you. They carry most brands, and accessories. I own 5 different metal detectors and each has different qualities and all have some weaknesses. Some have poor watertight electronics, some have poor headphones, some have very low audible tones, some don't work very deep. Look at coil size and depth that the unit reads. Lastly, you want a metal detector that has a short shaft for working underwater. I use a Minelab Excaliber 1000 with a 10" coil and an after market short aluminium diving rig that puts the coil about 24" in front of me when diving. The Excaliber isn't cheap. Expect to pay at least $500 for a decent underwater metal detector. My second favorite is a Fisher. Good luck!:box:

Best to check the terrain you are going to use one on before spending the bucks. I had one here on Maui and quickly found out I couldn't use it because of the lava on the ocean floor. Not sure what the makeup of the lava here is but the detector went off constantly. Others here had the same problem. They are good here on the sandy beaches and shoreline but not underwater. I purchased mine from Kellyco also. I did hear that the Excalibur is one of the best but is in the $1000 range. Good luck. :shades:
