What is the weather now? I know Florida is experiencing storms. What are the current conditions in Coz? Water temps? Vis? etc.? PD:D Port was closed today per winds - not really Norte as wind came from South-East. It rained yesterday but cleared during the day today [though still windy]. Water temp. last few days was 28 Centigrade [sorry my computer is in C], but I think it is 81-82 - nice and warm. Vis was excellent and until today superb conditions [last 4 days, I am here]. pdelannoy December 18th, 2009, 09:17 PM Thanks all. The water temps and vis most important. Interesting that day time temps are per Phoenx, AZ. Divingdogdr December 18th, 2009, 11:55 PM Vis is great when you can dive. I dove all week in a shorty and did not get cold but my wife had to put on her hood ( she gets cold easily). Diving should be great when you get here next week after the winds are gone ( or at least are not out of the north). They tell me that diving is best after a norte but I will be gone by then so you get to enjoy it. Actually, this is a norte - a mild one with winds out of the north and shifting to the NE - and the port opened this morning at 10:00am for all boats. ernani December 20th, 2009, 10:28 AM Sunday Morning update: We all woke-up today under a thick gray cloud cover. Norte wind is blowing strong and port is open only to large boats [I think it is 36 feet and bigger, but not sure]. We miss the Caribbean sun.... Norte wind is blowing strong and port is open only to large boats [I think it is 36 feet and bigger, but not sure]. We miss the Caribbean sun.... I left 35 degrees yesterday morning and was in shorts and a t-shirt yesterday afternoon. Early this morning I had my wooly pullover on while I was outside working. It is overcast and we have had a few drops of rain twice this morning. Out of the wind it is very comfortable. Looking forward to diving during the middle of the week. macado December 20th, 2009, 07:26 PM Went out diving yesterday and today. First time I've ever been cold in Cozumel. This wind is a killer, hopefully we get some sun in the next few days. I'm glad I packed a couple long sleeve shirts. In any case Cozumel is definitely better than Boston right now and no snow! BTravlin December 20th, 2009, 11:31 PM We dove today with Blue XTSea and the diving was excellent. Boat ride back was a little chilly and a little bumpy but well worth it. Definitely chilly walking around town this evening. May have to buy a long sleeve shirt or light jacket if the wind doesn't die down. Norte wind is blowing strong and port is open only to large boats [I think it is 36 feet and bigger, but not sure]. We miss the Caribbean sun.... It was open for everybody yesterday - "with precaution" - but was closed for everyone on Saturday Here are the standard port status calls from the Harbor Master and applies to fishing, diving, snorkeling boats, etc.- it's one of the following: Open Open for all boats, with precaution Open for boats over 30' (never heard of him opening for over "36' and bigger") Open for boats over 40' Closed for ALL boats under 50' - which means only the ships and ferries are running Closed for ALL aquatic activity - means no shore diving, no fishing, no snorkeling, no diving, no para sailing, no jet skies, etc. (this is usually combined with the closed for under 50' status Christi December 21st, 2009, 06:23 PM For those of you freezing your tushes off in the states - I am thinking about you! At least you'll have a white Christmas! If it's any consolation - it's pouring BUCKETS here right now and it's SIXTY FOUR degrees if you can believe it!!!! The locals have pulled out the sweaters, the down comforters, the sweat pants, and the winter coats...haha! The good news - the wind has died to 7mph from the north and is shifting to the East overnight (thanks to the rain) - this means tomorrow looks MUCH nicer for diving! Stay warm and dry everyone - this too shall pass :) firstdive2005 December 21st, 2009, 07:27 PM For those of you freezing your tushes off in the states - I am thinking about you! I'll bring ya'll some tooks when I'm back down for February if it's still chilly then.:D greylion December 21st, 2009, 07:28 PM I'll be diving with you in mid March Christi, really looking forward to it. Look like we'll be ordering pizza for delivery this evening. I think the island is going to shut down - haha! Good luck with that delivery :) CHI delivers too if you can't get a pizza - they can walk it over and won't have to do the moped delivery - so you might have better luck with them. The number for Chi is 869-8156 B & H - Normal departure (8am) from Aldora pier in the AM unless I call and advise you differently :) Sorry the weather is so cruddy for all of those that are spending the holidays here with us! This really is supposed to clear out though!!! Christi December 21st, 2009, 09:14 PM I think the island is going to shut down - haha! So yes, the island is shutting down for all intensive purposes! My backyard is flooded! BTravlin December 21st, 2009, 09:28 PM I think the island is going to shut down - haha! This really is supposed to clear out though!!! Thanks for thinking of us. If pizza doesn't show up within next 30 minutes we'll give Chi a call. Room next door to us has waterfall coming through light fixture in bathroom. Sounds slightly dangerous. We have towels up against base of sliding doors to prevent river from overtaking room. May have to call for fresh towels! At least they're still delivering margaritas to the room! :D CozumelAntonio December 21st, 2009, 10:42 PM Open Open for all boats, with precaution Open for boats over 30' (never heard of him opening for over "36' and bigger") Open for boats over 40' Closed for ALL boats under 50' - which means only the ships and ferries are running Closed for ALL aquatic activity - means no shore diving, no fishing, no snorkeling, no diving, no para sailing, no jet skies, etc. (this is usually combined with the closed for under 50' status Funny you mention this, had a lengthy argument the other day about this point with someone, as many are under the impression (as you mention above I bolded and U/L) that the HarborMaster can "shut down shore diving", this is just not so. HarborMaster has authority over boats, that's it. They have no jurisdiction for shore diving, this is entirely up to the individuals, be it divers, a dive shop or an Instructor. cvchief December 21st, 2009, 11:33 PM Sitting in the lobby of the Iberostar. Another margarita or run for the room? Think I have one more and see if it slacks. What ever, I got the dives in today. macado December 22nd, 2009, 06:40 PM Wow that rain sucked yesterday. Weather today was MUCH better. Sun is finally out. Got a few quality dives in today. Weather looks good for the rest of the week I believe. Well, true as that may be - I'm not going to be the one to challenge the harbor master or the powers that be here :D I'll also say that any shop or person renting tanks to shore dive in those conditions if the Harbor Master says "closed for all aquatic activity" would be crazy IMO :) The only exception would be for East side diving on those days.
