I'm looking to buy some of the 6 chip Osram OStar LEDs online somewhere. I've found a couple on sites like digikey but the product sheets say they only output ~800 Lumens. Where can I find the LEDS that dive companies are advertising 1100 Lumens in 16w LEDS? Where can I buy the reflectors that go with these LEDS?

I have tried many reflectors with the Ostar and I am disappointed with all of them. The only one that I think will work for a dive light is the Fraen reflector and I have not been able to get one. Arrow wants a 192 minumum order.

The Ostar LEDs are now obsolete, so you should really find a different one to work with. Otherwise, you will not be able to find replacements. I have looked at mouser and digikey and they don't have the correct color temp anymore. I bouhgt 5 of them to play with and burned up 4 so I just have one left.

You could try a Phlatlight SST-90 or SST-50 but you will also have a hard time finding a reflector.

I use the Cree MCE 700 lumens with a Fraen reflector and that gives a really nice beam.

I've also seen the 1000 lumen claim and seriously doubt it. The 6-die Ostar is the 27W model runs at 1.3 amps and 21 volts. You not only have to look at the LED but what is used to drive it... buck puck, boost puck etc...

Thanks for the help. I just gave up on the Ostar LEDs and have decided to get some SST-90's. I figure if I can find a way to drive them to 5 A I can get alot of light out of it. Just need to find an eficient way to get 5 Amps and also a reflector now...

Get with DIWDiver (I think) on candlepowerforums.com. He is developing one that I am waiting on as well. Should be in the $20s range.

Awesome! That just leaves a good reflector. I found these: http://www.ledil.com/datasheets/DataSheet_Lily-SST90.pdf. Hopefully I can buy just a few.

Luminus's website has a link to Avnet Electronic. They have the Ledil reflectors. Also there's another member building a video light using another reflector who is pretty far along who posted to a thread I have going here. (http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/do-yourself-diy/324891-diy-can-light-head-size.html) He's using a different reflector with a square beam, and should be posting some beam shots soon. Maybe some helpful info here.

24-26 degrees does kind of sound like alot with that reflector...

I'm on divegearexpres.com now loking at the Hollis 16w LED. They say that their Osram is focused to 6 degrees. Anyone know which reflector this is using? Same with the Light Monkey reflectors

Osram with Fraen FRC series reflector. I have been trying to get a hold of those for a while but there is a minimum 192 order for these....

The 6 degrees could be 6+ and 6-... Therefore really 12 degrees.

Get with DIWDiver (I think) on candlepowerforums.com. He is developing one that I am waiting on as well. Should be in the $20s range.

I'm here (DIY forum) too. Production PCB's are in transit, scheduled for delivery Monday. I will build the first two Monday or Tuesday, and they go to Bradsab. Then if all goes well I will open a sales thread on candlepower forums. I will post a link in the thread mentioned below.

One caution though, my driver may or may not satisfy the "efficient" clause. It's pretty good if the battery voltage is close to the LED voltage, but as the battery voltage increases, the efficiency decreases. It's great for a 4-series NiMH pack but if you plan to use a 2-series Li-Ion pack to drive an SST-90, you may want a different driver. The link below is to a thread that discusses this in more detail, and has links to the other two drivers I'm aware of that are under development.

I've been searching CPF all morning now and I think I'm going to buy some aspherics to test with this bulb. I threw one I had laying around on my P7 with suprising results.

Any reasons why none is using aspherics for dive lights?

Packhorse uses aspherics quite a bit with good results. The only thing with aespherics is that they show the shape of whatever LED you are using, depending on how focused you set them. So the SST beam will look square, the Osram you'll be able to see all the dies in it with all the lines... They also don;t give spill, all the light will be focused in one spot (big or small)

Not to worry, you're second on the list. I'm planning to make 20 the first time around (after Bradsab's two), which should cover anyone who has expressed interest already.

Efficiency is discussed further on CPF, but it's actually pretty simple:

Eff = Vled/Vbat.

Now I put an aspheric on the top of my reflector I have for the P7 and got a really tight circular beam. I have no idae why but it looked really nice. IT also sems with the aspherics that making a focusable light head would be pretty simple. If I want a circular beam can I do with the SST-90 what I've done with my P7?

I'm not aespherics expert, but I think the main factor is the distance of the aespheric to the LED.

I've been checking stuff out on CPF. I also noticed Packhorse's SST-90 experiment. I think I'm going to go with the SST-90 with an aspheric and maybe a reflector. I saw someone who used a mini aspheric in the center of a lens on top of a reflector with good results. Probably just buy a ton of stuff off DX and experiment.
