View Full Version : BP/W or Jacket BCD, Which Is More Comfortable To Fly In?

With current baggage regulations and the looming addition of fees for carry on luggage the airlines have made dive gear choices all the more complicated. This thread has been formed to discuss personal preferences as to which BCD you find is most comfortable to wear while flying. As a BP/W devotee I find the new Halcyon padded travel package ideal....
http://www.halcyon.net/files/gear/Infinity_ACB_bl.jpg
The padding keeps the backplate from digging into your back on long flights and the backplate itself adds support you just can't get from a jacket BCD.
So what BCD do you prefer for long flights?

I would much prefer the Jacket BC so when the plane goes down it will keep me upright and in a more comfortable position while waiting for rescue.

I am okay with either my backplate or my vest for flights up to eight hours. Anything longer than that and I put the tank in checked baggage, though. :D

But aren't you afraid that the rescuers will call you a stroke, or worse give a better equipped diver rescue priorities?

My jacket BC has more padding than my BP/W. That being said it is more restricting. I wear the jacket BC for longer flights and the BP/W for the shorter ones. As an added bonus, I can fit more snacks into the jacket BC as well.

I've added weight pockets to mine for that very reason, I can fit a half of a Subway BMT in each pocket and the velcro enclosures make sandwich access effortless.

That's what overhead storage is for,----no??....
but no problem with other things, just wear them, all the time....

I do much the same thing. On a related note, a snorkel makes an excellent straw for a Big Gulp.

I'd be fine with them giving other divers a higher priority because I have an AIR II on my Jacket BC to save me if necessary.

Ooh, excellent idea, or you could use it to shotgun one of the airlines $7.00 beers.:beerchug:

Sometimes I put chips in the BC pocket and make a mask full of dip.

Good idea, but always remember you can have no more than 3.5 ounces of dip and it must be in a clear container so no black masks as dip bowls. The Cressi Big Eyes crystal is not only TSA Compliant but enables two different types of dip.

Please, someone wear their BC on a plane and tell us how the yo-yo's at security as well as flight crew react if you get that far.

Should I warn the security agents that I really like to carry silly putty with me to play on the plane? Or would it be better left as a surprise? I have a nicely sized DR pockets just for it :thumb:. I like to make little animals with it so I make sure I have lots of wire with it (for the whiskers of course).

For further baggage savings, you can switch to these and wear your fins and booties on the plane as well.

For the love of Pete, don't anybody dare tell people that they can save more space by wearing MOF.....the plane would never leave the ground because of all the attempted rescues of all the distressed divers :shakehead:

Certainly safer than flip flops, and less dorky than Croc's.

I carry white trash bags, they make great signaling devices and double as air motion sickness bags.:vomit:

And don't forget to pack your computer rather than wearing it.....wearing one on the plane could cause it to think you're altitude diving and mess up your vacation.

If more people did this just think of the money that airlines could save on those life jackets, seat cushions that float and life rafts. They might even be able to bring back free peanuts!

I had that happen once. TSA was NOT amused by it beeping and flashing 5', 5', 5'! :rofl3:

Once the idea takes off PADI could introduce another cert level: Airline Passenger BP/W Certification
But let's get back to the OP's original question.
I prefer the Diverite Transpac, it has more D rings to secure extra bags of chips, but I'm wondering does a fixed or retractable clip work best?

Well, if you're gonna be that way about it: I prefer the poodle jacket, as I can pack snacks and little bottles of alcohol in the pockets. Mine has an authorized Air II, so if the plane crashes in the water I can orally inflate it and not worry about drowning. Or I can wear it inflated and if the compartment loses oxygen the people beside me can use the oxygen masks and I'll just breathe through my BCD. :D

I can't believe we're all overlooking the obvious here, if you fill the bladder of your BCD of choice with your liquor of choice you could save a small fortune on those overpriced mini bottles of booze and supply a great party for everyone in your seating section! :drunks:

You just have to buy it in the duty free shop after you clear security. Otherwise they'll confiscate it. (Unless you're Dee :rofl3:)

TSA - only three ounces of liquids are allowed, so the bladder would have to be drained prior to take off, but wearing your 3/5mm hood would negate having to buy the Bose noise reduction headphones.

Damn I was going to buy a double bladder:dontknow: but then with the long lines that this will create at the TSA perhaps I might still need it. I was thinking of going the complete NE Christams tree approach, double 100# bungeed wiings 1 bladder for Tequila the other for beer, "bag of ****" slung over the shoulder full of snacks sandwiches, limes and salt shaker. I was even thinking it might be easier to make it back to my seat if I deployed my Jersey Upline when going to the head.
