During my last dive i wanted to get my buddies attention , he was not far from me only 10 ft or so but he was looking In the opposite direction. I only wanted to point out something i had seen.
Long story short i got his attention by making some sort of vocal noise . When i got home i got to thinking that it may be a good idea to find a better attention getter. Looking around on the net i noticed $60.00 air horn type gadgets and a $10 whistle that can be blown .
I happened to watch an old war movie where the soldiers used a clicker(those things we played with as kids) to communicate with each other. Well it took some looking but for $2 bucks i may have found a simple attention getter.I have not tried it yet but i will be diving Cuba later this month and i am taking clickers to pass around .

ohhh.. band of brothers... SOOO GOOD.. Good Idea.. those things would totally work... those whistles work pretty good as well... still haven't seen one of the crazy in line air horns though..
Snapple bottle top's would work as a clicker... :D

Canuckme welcome to the board. I could hear your clicking all the way over here. Where are you from in Ontario?? Big spot for those south of the 49th. I am in east-central Ontario east of Peterborough and northwest of Belleville.

Hey Canuckme;
Welcome to the board; Where are you at?
Butch is out near Peterbourough. Diving Gal is in Ottawa. I'm in Toronto. Somebody should be near you unless you are out Wawa Way. (Gotta luv the big Goose!) If you would like; drop me an e-mail and let's get some diving in before the water gets hard!
Welcome to the board. Can somebody e-mail me a review of Band of Brothers. Couldn't see it in Ontario - or couldn't find it.
(by the way, if your buddy is too far away to get his attention - your buddy is too far away. Depth, viz experience and other conditions not withstanding...)

See.. now this is very strange. The HBO show that i hear aired last nite had a clicker scene in it ?? . I actually got the idea from the movie.. The Longest Day.. which was on late at nite weeks back. The only reason i decided to post my idea today was because i had finally found a store that sells clickers. They are about 2 inches long ,1 inch deep, 1 inch wide , encased in plastic with a thumb size opening to reach the clicker part, also has an eye to attach to a retractor or lanyard. As for rust ya it probably will but for 2 bucks a season what the hey .
Thanks to all for the welcome , I am here mostly to lurk and learn. And hello Butch I am from Hamilton and have spent lots of time up in the Kawarthas fishing .

Band of Brothers: The first two parts were great, but they didn't show the third part. I was really disappointed since the movie was going so good. I haven't looked for the next time it airs, but I really want to see the ending. I thought it was on par with Saving Private Ryan.

I believe the remaining episodes (one hour each) will be shown each Sunday from September 16th through November 11th. Set your VCR's; well worthwhile watching. It follows a book written by Stephen Ambrose, who does a great job in telling the history of great events. I recommend reading D Day by him.

On New Year's eve 2000 some some friends and I did a midnight dive in Bonaire. We brought a squeeze tube of champagne (try that!) and some party favors -- you know, the kind that unroll and honk. The paper part quickly shredded when wet, but the plastic honker portion worked great! More fun than a tank banger...

As a former Special Forces and Ranger Paratrooper I did enjoy the first two installments of this show about E Company of the 101st Airborne. Yes, they did infact show the clickers in this show and also in the Longest Day. They were supposed to be used instead of passwords. One click to challenge two clicks to answer. In the Longest day a trooper mistook the click of a German's bolt action loading a shell into the chamber of his rifle for the answer...big mistake. It was shown on HBO here and as somebody said... it will be on Sunday nights for a total of 10 shows. (Two already shown.) As for underwater usage I haven't got a clue...if they work great! If not...not much money for it.
I can vouch for the fact that linking up with your unit on the DZ after a night jump can be very difficult since one can't shout, show any light or make a lot of noise unless one would like to draw fire to himself.

Just saw that film. I was very impressed with the depth and intensity of the film. It was very compelling. I would definitely recommend it.

When I need to get the attention of someone under water, I just punch the fist of one hand into the palm of my other hand several times. It makes me look like an angry diver, but it works pretty well. I can get the attention of divers as far away as 15 to 20 feet. Give it a try.

I think the best dvice is something called "Marrachas" or "Rattler". may be know in other names as well. It's a metal tube, about 10cm long that has several little mettal balls inside. when rattled under the water it makes quite some noise (that's why I hate it).
Another option is a "tank banger". just put a plastic ball on a bungie cord, tie around your tank. than pull and let go. It will be quite noisy.
Or there's my favorite solution, takes some practice- hit with you feast as hard as you can against your palm. with proper training, it should make enough noise (that's what I use with students, I hate seriouse noise).

But last time I hit my feast, I splattered the soup all over the queen!
(sorry...couldn't let the obvious just lay there)

I sure hope I get to meet you Mike. Your sense of humor is similar to mine. We had a pretty good time at Terrell, as soon as the wife prints and scans the pics, I'll post a few.
Hey! Athens is actually 20 miles closer....hint hint.

Hey All,
THE ABSOLUTE BEST uw noisemaker is the Mini-Hammerhead! The whole family has one, and since you can shake it fast and hard, you get everyone's attention. We always start a dive with "Shave and a Haircut" with massive rattling at the "two bits" part.
Uh, Mike, you did me proud by that one... It was a souper comment! It was really a bread taking moment. Looking forward to meating you one day (uh, that LAST one sure sounds flaky, don't it... :tease: ) Spew you later dude!!!

Hey Liquid,
I think the word you were looking for is fist. Not to worry though, inspite of these jokers and their ribbing, I think we got your meaning.
Keep up the good work.

Might work, and if it does great (cheap = great) I have a question for all. I have never been on a dive trip (ie:commercial) but I've heard that they have some type of recall system...I would like to rig up something on my boat so that my wife can get my attention...any suggestions??
Thanks,

The guys around here use what is effectively a small explosive. About pencil sized - I believe they are commercially availiable.
Apparently _very_ loud, and you don't want to be near one when it goes off.
Not sure you want to use these for casual attention getting though...

Hey all,
Scuba Pro has come out with a mass diver recall system. All of a sudden, you just can't seem to breathe out of that new SP regulator. I hear it's VERY effective at getting divers out of the water... :tease:

Bobb....just bang a wrench on the metal ladder. The sound should carry through the water well enough to get any diver's attention.
While at Athens Scuba Park recently, I was chatting with the park owner when he needed to get the attention of one of the other divers. So he grabbed a wrench out of his golf cart and started banging on the metal structure and ladder of the dock we were sitting on.
Not only did the diver we wanted surface, but so did about 30 other people all over the quarry (9 acres of water)

Thanks TexasMike for the wrench input....but we've tried that with some success...I've got a pontoon boat and my wife would bang on one of the pontoons, sometimes I'd hear her but more than a few times I didn't...As far as the bike horn, I'm not sure that would work more than a short distance....I was wondering if one of those air horns (for boating) would work....hmmmmmm
thanks to all for your suggestions.

There are boats that let you snorkle with Pacific Whitesided dolphins in the BC area. One year my dive buddy and I carried clickers to see if they would attract the dolphins (you know - so we could get the best photos!). My experience with them is that the sound didn't travel that well UW. I mean for this human. The dolphins either didn't hear it or weren't particularly impressed.

Ok so I said i would get back to the group and let you all know the results of the clicker test . Well the short and sweet of it is that the idea sucked , well that is unless i can find a clicker that comes with a built in volume control. By the way the test was done this past week diving in Cuba, Which i would be happy to post a report if anyone is interested , but i do realize that Cuba is a sensitive subject to some.

I think if your wife started the motor and proceded to leave it would get your attention. I know that would work for me.
