The International Whaling Commission has just unveiled a proposal to legalize commercial whale hunting for the first time in 24 years.
They will be meeting this June 21-25, 2010 in Morocco to discuss this proposal.

If you read between the lines, what they are saying is that despite the 24 year ban, illegal whale hunting has been on the increase, and that they are powerless to stop it, and somehow hope that if they placate the whaling interests by legalising it, they can place limits on how many whales are killed.
This makes no sense to me.
For any other law, if something is illegal, and people continue to do it anyway, would it then be logical to say "oh, well people are doing it anyway, and we don't seem to be doing a very good job stopping them, let's let them do it but place a limit on how much they can do it and hope they stick to that limit..."??
If they didn't obey the ban on commercial whale hunting in the first place, why would they stick to limits imposed when it is legalised? And more importantly, even if they did stick to these limits, do we really want to re-enstate commercial whaling? Hasn't the ocean been plundered enough?
The IWC meets in just a few days, please sign the avaaz petition against legalising commercial whale hunting.
