A great afternoon, evening and night to spend on the hammock in the back yard watching the ducks and wishing I had gas in my boat to go for a spin......
I just happened to head home early from the office, do some shopping, talk to a couple of dive buddies, and then "poof"..the lights went out.......

heading home on the highway, when "poof" the radio station I was listening to went off.... the silence was all around. Then the sirens started.
It was only when I got off the highway did I have any problems. Silly people who forget how a 4-way stop works! Got home, and like Butch spent the rest of the day relaxing in the backyard (no ducks).
Got caught up reading a great book, it was really great with so little noise happening.

At work, writing a complicated report and not saving it for at least three hours. Lost all of my work. :banging:
Went home, got in the canoe, paddled and drank beer till by blood pressure dropped to normal.

Quiznos. Then home. Then we headed out to lake ont for a sweet night dive about a mile off shore. Not much to see, but clarity of about 30 feet and it couldnt have been more peaceful.

Just coming back in from looking for a wreck, then we packed the gear and went did a night dive on the Comet. Came back in and the power was back in Collins Bay. Proving once again that diving solves everything.

I had just picked up tanks for moonlight dive on the Gaskin. Was a lot more moonlight than planned once we got out of town :) . When we surfaced the lights were on in Brockville but Ottawa was still dark at 0100 when we got back.
Actually, most people were handling the driving better than I expected. I was assuming there would be much more trouble than there was.

I had just gotten out of bed to go to work...........
Living in Lanark County we're used to loosing power here and there over the year........the patch job after the ice storm is still showing it's wonderful effects.
Got about half way to work when I heard about the major blackout - so I turned around and went home.....called my boss - she told me to stay put..........

Was downtown T.O. in an office tower working away and POOF!!
Fortunately I was able to get home. Chilled last night. Stargazing was great!!
Still no power at my house now!! Work pd for a cab to get me here. Hopefully I'll be able to find one with gas to get me home.
Now explain this to me: Ontario is in a state of emergency with appeals to use as little power as possible. So why is the Toronto Stock Exchange open? It's not an essential service!! It being open encourages all the traders, support staff, technicians and such to go to work powering on thousands of computers, lights and airconditioning. How does that make sense????
If it were an essential service it would be open 24/7. It's not. How careless of the business district to do this.

Because they need a good beating. Makes you wonder what these people are thinking.

Yup a good beating. Or, failing that, sabotage the A/C and sprinkler (unless they water their lawn with stored rainwater - some people do) I'd fink on them at least. (This is where a good old-fashioned shunning can work wonders). If the A/Cs stay on, you folks down there will probably stay dark a lot longer because the system will go down again.
We didn't get hit at all - even though places around Atikokan did (?).

So when some elderly people in high rise apartments who can't get water or ac DIES, we'll be sure to blame those with AC running and the TSE for their lack of consideration.
I can't believe how inconsiderate some people can be!

PS The director of my department just went out to get us some treats. I can't believe she brought back CORONAS AND WOODY'S!!
Okay, so my workplace ain't so bad after all and I guess I don't mind staying a bit late tonight!!

Normally I would agree, but today is not a regular trading day. Today is the 3rd friday of the month, which is options expiry day, and there are probably millions of dollars worth of options positions that could be at risk as well as untold millions in potentially unhedged exposure should positions not be allowed to closed out today. And a good chunk of this would be in many pension funds, including cpp and other pensions like teachers. While not an essential service I agree, there could be significant financial repercussions.....

I was almost home from work. I'm another rural person so I thought "oh yeah, the power's out no big deal" and I went to mow the lawn. 2 hrs later the lawn is done still no power so I checked the radio in the truck.
I had power back around 1 am, didn't go to work this am because I couldn't get my pump going. It's fine now but apparently they sent everyone home at 10:30.

I don't know how it works in the frozen north, but in NO lif you turn the AC off for an hour when you turn it back on again you'll spend 3 hours pumping the water out of your house air before it starts to cool off again! We gotta let the AC get a run on it when the sun's down or it'll never chatch up this time of year.

I've worked in trading for many years now and completely understand expiry day and triple witching etc. That doesn't mean a shorter trading day wasn't possible. Many traders that I deal with everyday are complaining the exchange shouldn't have opened or opened only for a few hours.
As far as I'm concerned, they could have made better decisions. I used to be in wonder about the whole 'stock market' thing until I'd worked at the TSE for a while. Since then I've seen many a bone-headed decision made there. Thankfully I got out and moved on to better things although still in the industry so I still see their blunders.
The brewskies are flowing here now!!

No disagreeing with you diverlady, but you asked for a reason why they would even open up at all......
diverlady
August 15th, 2003, 04:08 PM
It was kind of more a rhetorical question and a gripe. There's also the whole bigger picture of having the country appear to be financially stable during a crisis and to not appear vulnerable to potential enemies, and of course the NYSE was open... yada yada yada...
(I wonder how traders got their MBF orders entered for options expiry since they would have had to do that last night - no power. I guess calling the TSE this morning would have been there only course of action.)
BTW - I hear the slots at Woodbine Racetrack are running. Must not deprive the gambling addicts.
Go figure.

I can understand that. There's more important things in life. Beyond your control and mine, the powers that be dictate how things should run.....
As for the MBF orders, probably put in this morning before market open, either that or some changed to MOC on the close. Never dealt much with Toronto on these, as liquidity scares me a bit.
Now my main worry is that power still stays on so my drinks keep nice and chilled.... :)
diverlady
August 15th, 2003, 04:22 PM
I should have been advised of changes to the MOC or additional OE sessions for MBF orders since that affects my work but really who cares now!! The mkt is closed! (Well except for the LSTS.)
Still no power at my house.
Yes, must consume all alcohol in the fridge so none goes bad!! :D Boss just handed out the last of the brewskies here. She doesn't want anyone who didn't go in to work to get any!!

I rather liked this black out event, for the first time my city neighbors came out of there lairs and spoke to us after 5 years. I had no TV so I had to read a book. I checked out the stars and went for an evening walk.

I was at dolphinos with Drownedrat picking up bottles thought it was just someone overloading a circuit down the street happens all the time with peoples airconditioners.then we learned it was more serious. .. did a dive in morrisburg and came up and saw the power was back on. well as soon as we turned on the radio we learned the truth.
...who needs electricity to go diving anyway :)

At work in ICU of our hospital. No TV's, no AV, no elevators until emergency generators came on.
We had a patient on a respirator ventilator and that was looking kinda scary for awhile....
It was hot, dark and made us appreciate what we often take for granted every day!

When the power went out yesterday I was working away on my laptop computer...thank god for battery back-up!
Spent most of today at my office at City Hall until the Mayor decided that most everyone should go home. So packed up my stuff and headed out the the grocery and beer store and the gas station to fill up. Had a nice bbq for supper tonight with some neighbours on the block whom with had a block party last night.
As of now, almost everyone on the block has the A/C going and some are watering their lawns and gardens. Go figure eh!

Yo!
Go figure is correct, we live in a selfish world. I Heard on CNN this evening that if we don't start to clean up our act with water pollution 60% of the worlds coral reefs will be gone with in 30 years. How will man be able to ajust his greed of nature and ignorance to fix this, if we can't get him to turn off his air conditioner and stop wasting water on the lawn in times of national emergencies and serious concerns.

I'm now looking into solar and wind alternate energy, may take a while but figure it's worth it. Our farm was hit hard in the ice storm and with the black out I was making trips to the creek to water horses...that are too dumb to go there themselves.

I was sitting at work writing an email to a Scubaboard member! LOL We had windows in our suite so I wound up working for another half hour. Gotta love the automotive business. NOT!
Took a couple hours to get home and I was very thankful given I intended to fill the gas tank on the way home. & thus I was stuck at home for the long run.
My condo stayed nice and cool for the most part. Basement didn't flood with the storms and lack of pumps. I cross-stitched a present for my nephew-to-be's christening. 4 months ahead of time!LOL And then I worked on a Christmas stocking for another nephew that is a year late.
Power came on about 9:30pm Friday night. My refridgerator and freezer have never looked so clean! And I'm very thankful that I"m in charge of my SCUBA club's buddy line program. (Local practice / fun dives) I had lots of extra goodies and drinks that I wouldn't normally have. And I had to eat the hotdogs before they went bad, right?
All in all an interesting experience. It will be nice when I don't have to boil the water before drinking / cooking anymore. & can run the dishwasher, wash some clothes and turn on the air!

I was at work running some experineces in a lab and the it went poof and I lost all my work :banging:
BU thats not what was most frustrating, Tuesday I went to bring my tanks to my LDS (in Ottawa) to fill up and it was too hot so the LDS said leave them overnight and come and get them later this week. I was working Wednes night so I didn't go, Thursday night was hell getting home so I didn<t get a chjance to go and Friday when I show up at the LDS at lunch and again at two there was a sign saying closed to conserve power. Now thats a very thoughtfull thing but......
I'm working as a DM SAturday and Sunday and I wanted my tanks :upset:. Furthernmore I thought I wouldn get to dive this weekend.....
However at 5 I got a phone call from the LDS where I had left a message, they wanted to know when I wouold like to come get my tanks( right away)
So all in all I had a very nice week-end Dove the Daryaw, the Lillie and the Musky on Saturday
And redove them on Sunday, what a week-end....
Thanks to PY for the incredible trip

I was in a patient's room in ICU when it went black! By the time the emergency generator kicked in, I was manually bagging the ventilated patient and so were staff in other rooms! The only vents that didn't go down were Puritan Bennett 840's that have battery backups (they rule!).
The HVAC goes down on backup power so it was pretty toasty when I left the hospital. Lighting was at a minimum. The stairwells were full of staff and visitors as most of the elevators were down. IT was scrambling to get computers in emergency plugs and rebooted. Emergency department flashlights... oh yeah... where did we put those!?!? It was a fun experience! Really makes you think.
Friday was crazy, I went to Costco for a few cases of water... people were buying 4-10 cases of water! Batteries, flashlights were flying of the shelves.
Lineups for gas were close to a city block long everywhere on the Friday. I finally got off the road and on to the gas station property when the attendant started walking down the line saying... the power was down again and the pumps aren't running!!! Many cars left at that point and I actually moved up to a pump. I sat around for 2 hours before the pumps were up again. However if I didn't get the gas, I wouldn't have gone to Toby for the weekend. BTW Toby gas great, not too busy... think people were spooked!

I was down in St.Fabien Quebec (up road from Rimouski) on my Empress diving trip. Didn't loose any stuff in the freezer because we moved over to Quebec side of the river where they have seperate power - was only out for a few minutes I hear.
Sorry no sad story here.

I left my home just about 1 minute before the power failure. On my way to meet my dive buudy I noticed all the traffic lights were out. We drift dove the Niagar River---by the time I got home it was back on. SOOOOOOOO----next time this happens--grab your gear and go for a dive! Don't need electricity down under!
