I heard a cool idea for trim weights yesterday.

Pick up some grenades from an army surplus store and melt/fill them with lead. You could even take off the top and put an anchor for a clip in there.

I guess you never saw the lead weights that were sold in stores about 15yrs ago moulded into the shape of a grenade. They were plastic coated.

...you try to cross the border with them, or forget and leave one in your dive bag and run it through the machine at the airport. I BET you'll miss your plane!!!!

Considering todays antiterrorist bent (and rightfully so) to do something like that would be just plain irresponsible, and border and stupid...

Did I say I was going to travel with them?

To travel with lead weights would be stupid!

My dive buddy has a friend that is really into WWII items, guns, grenades, planes etc. So I can understand your satisfaction with such a find. I think everyone, myself included, just want to give you a heads up on the hassle, these things could create.

With the warnings about terrorists in the water, best to avoid being close to any harbors, bridges, cargo ships, airplanes, airports, or coast guard officials. . .:boom:

Have fun with your new find.

Could just imagine what the local ploice will think when they see that?

Just try and travel with them.

Cool Idea, just not practical after 911.

I absolutely cannot believe the level of overreaction to this one. Sorry guys but you need to get your noses out of the puter and realize that not everyone is that caught up in the 911 thing.

Live your lives, be safe, watch out for the other man, and move on.

BTW: I melted down the lead the other night, and made these things. Pretty good. I will post a picture when I get a chance.

I guess you never heard the terror alert put out about terrorists potentially seeking scuba training for attacks on shipping and underwater infrastructure? I'd like to see the looks you get coming out of the water ANYWHERE in the world with what looks like hand grenades on your person. God help you if there happened to be someone with a cellphone and half a brain nearby. Or a cop.

As a couple of other posters alluded to - neat idea 15 years ago. Not anymore.

"Did I say I was going to travel with them?

If you put these things on your rig, and they are seen at the gas station on the way to the dive, you may have trouble. A stop by a cop on the way to a dive will be trouble if he asks you to open your bag. A stop by the Coast Guard while on a boat will cause REAL trouble. Walk into the water past a group of folks on the beach will have you met by the local law enforcement when you walk back out of the water. This 'IDEA' of using grenades for weights (inert or not) is an extreamly BAD IDEA, unless you like being hounded by the police in your area.

In todays climate of anti-terrorism, anything that LOOKS like a gun, is a gun in the eyes of the uninformed, and the same goes for grenades! Anything that LOOKS like a grenade, is a grenade and will cause you to be hauled up in front of the local constabulary. I spent a lot of years in the military, used to keep an inert pinapple grenade on my desk at work when I worked at the battalion HQ. I know what a real grenade looks and feels like. Does your local cop on the street? I really doubt it. So, he slaps you in cuffs, calls the local bomb squad and they either take you new weights, or place them in a safe area and try to detonate them...either way, you lose.

Good luck man! You are going to need it!

Call me the UBER NERD if you want, but I won't go around with fake grenades on my rig...

I must have missed the memo....

Why are grenades cool again?

If I saw someone with what looked like a grenade cliped to his BC I'd either draw down on the guy and wait for the troops to arrive or I'd just keep him in sight and call the troops.

As a police officer I'd take no chances with someone who has something like that. These days, one never knows....

It's a cool idea, but these days it's just stupid to fool around with something that looks like an expolsive device.

Oh man, too funny. I'd love to see some jerkwater cop draw down on me because my weights resemble bouncing betty's.

Where's the pic DMB? Did you make a mold yourself?

Okay,Okay,Okay. How about this pick up an inert claymore mine at a gun show or surplus store and get some plaster of paris and make a mold of it. Let the mold dry for several weeks (molten lead and water don't mix to well). Pour the lead and make slots for the weight belt. The natural curve of the claymore will be very anatomical. Best part is the front side, it says THIS SIDE TOWARDS ENEMY. Yeah Baby.

WHOOA, I think that grenades will look cool (but the laws). And what about a harpoon made from Heavy Machine Gun or from Sniper Rifle (with scoope, laser sight and bi-pod) :D

Snipers don't use laser sights.

Sometimes they (usually the spotter) will use an IR laser rangefinder but that is not a given as even that can let a target know you are there.

Boy this was way too funny to pass up. I was surfing through looking at other posts earlier and found one that a guy had found an actual gernade, amongst other things, while diving.
He turned it into the police and was arrested, spent a few nights in jail, etc.
Kinda like wearing a shirt that says "bomb squad".:boom:

After thinking about it, I probably wouldn't draw down on a diver who has something looking like grenades for trim weights hanging on him. They'd sure be heavy though, don't you think?

By the way, what's a "jerkwater cop?"

jerkwater

Jerkwater ........ Aquatic variety of the more terrestrial Peckerwood

I actually love the idea of an assault rifle speargun., the grenade weights and stick of dynamite tank.

Honestly you guys, this was a funny thread that most have taken too seriously, it should probably be shifted to scuba humor before the uniformed and ex uniformed on this thread get their knickers in a bunch.
