Hey All,

Just curious - Is Oxycheq the only manufactuer that makes wings in colors other than black?

As for Backplates - it seems the 11" spacing between holes is standard? But it does not seem that all backplates are compatible with all wings. I ran into a few postings where people were able to mix and match (ie halycon wing on some other mfg backplate)...Anyone out there care to chime in on which backplates besides Oxycheq's are compatible with the Oxycheq Mach V wing?

Thanks,

Bob

I believe Dive-Rite makes wings in red and blue. I believe Zeagle may do custom colors on their BCs, perhaps they can do custom on their wings as well.

Regarding oxycheq wings - I have two different oxycheq wings and use a hammerhead backplate that works fine with the wings. Another time I ended up using a deep sea supply backplate with one of my oxycheq wings.

11" is the standard spacing, but I suggest drilling the bottom hole a little bit longer because not everyone assembles their doubles with 11" on the mark.

Thanks!

Anyone know of wings in more high vis colors ie. Yellow, Neon Green, Chartreuse?

Reading more about plates compatibility with wings...seems to be more of a problem when dealing with single tanks than doubles :-/

Yes, I use a DSS plate with my (single) Oxycheq wing, and it's perfectly compatible. My SI uses a FredT plate with his wings (Oxycheq, DSS and in the past, Dive Rite), and there's never been a problem mixing and matching. Singles wing, doubles wing...it's never been an issue.

Deep Outdoors used to make bright orange wings (I have one) but they have gone out of business.

I know Tobin at DSS has made a pink wing or two . . . I saw one at Casino Point. You couldn't NOT see it. I think it was glowing.

This is not universally the case.

You may have been able to use various wings and plates, and these combos may have met your expectations, but mixing plates and wings for singles use can create compatibility problems.

Dive Rite used to make wings in red & blue but since that most divers bought black wings, they phased out the color wings. I stocked up on three red wings, so I think that I'd be OK for a while.

i have a pink dss doubles wing & looove it!

the 11" is standardized, and if you use an sta for singles you won't have a problem (except possibly needing to nudge your doubles bands as stated above).

the issue comes in when you're mixing & matching wings & plates and using the cam bands to hold things together, because some wings & some plates have their cam band slots in different places.

so doubles or sta = pretty much universal access between plates & wings of different manufacturers.

A black anodized aluminum plate from Zeagle (http://www.leisurepro.com/Prod/ZGLBP.html) would coordinate nicely with your chartreuse wing, once you track one down--at least that's what my stylist tells me. They're the new black. :D

Well, I'm glad to see that colors can be done, (and that DSS has done them), since Mrs DS has started to think about a BP/W setup. Naturally, she'll want pretty colors and all.

Her new Hera BC seems to weigh a ton, so even with an SS plate we might break even weight wise on the plane

We weighted Peter's Balance and my SS plate and 30 lb wing, and it was a wash. Switch to a Kydex or Aluminum plate, and you save four pounds.

I ran into a problem a couple of years back trying to use a Halcyon plate with an Oxycheq doubles wing. The lower corners of the plate are bent back just a little, and end up digging into the zipper on the wing. It's not something that I would have ever thought about until we actually put the plate on the wing.

DSS does not stock colored material, but Tobin can recommend where you can get some to send to him and he'll make the wings for you.

Humm,

That's really a response that should come from me.

Our current policy on colors other than black:

1) It's a special order, deposit required.

2) Lead time ~2 weeks

3) DSS cannot warranty any wings produced from customer supplied materials.

I recommend black, the main reason being we buy true 1050 ballistic materials in black only. It's possible to get other colors in 1050 ballistic, but it requires the purchase of enormous quantities of material, i.e. 1000's of yards

There is often a much wider range of colors available in 1000 denier Nylons, often in the surplus market, but 1000 denier is *NOT* 1050 ballistic

With surplus material is a crap shoot, most of the material is OK, but some is on the surplus market for a reason, might ravel, might fad or run etc. We know how the 1050 ballistic performs. We buy a lot of it, and have some leverage with our suppliers if there ever is a problem.

When you buy 1.5 yards from a Surplus House it's a gamble.

Humm,

That's really a response that should come from me.

That's what you told me when I asked you about colored wings last year. I was simply relaying the same message. But you're right. Next time I'll keep my mouth shut when it comes to your products and business even though I think of both rather highly.
