Kohl's is giving away $500,000 to the top 20 schools that get voted upon over on Facebook. The sad part is, the schools that really need this money don't have the resources to get word out. This touched my heart, and I wanted to repost it here and encourage y'all to take 30 seconds and vote.

For further incentive, this neighborhood artist is giving away 5x7 prints of his artwork to anyone who votes, out of his own pocket.

For full details, please visit his blog:
Sugar Frosted Goodness!: Giving Away My Work For Free!

Here, also, is the e-mail that he (Jesse, the artist) sent me today:
Thanks so much for the support and the nice note! It¹s very much appreciated
by myself and the school. If you have any other resources or friends that
you can reach out to on behalf of this Title 1 school that would be amazing.
Please keep promoting for them until Friday when the voting ends.

Unfortunately this Kohl's Cares challenge looks like it will largely (maybe
entirely) go to the schools that already have substantial budgets in place
and were able to market themselves the best (via free iPad incentives,
helicopter rides, and paid advertising) with those budget dollars and not
the schools that really really need this money. This school can¹t even
afford new computers for themselves let alone give them away in exchange for
votes like many of the leading schools are doing. May the most deserving
schools win... and hopefully not only the ones with the biggest advertising
budgets.

I¹ll be sure to send you a print. Unfortunately I can only afford to send
the 5x7 prints. I have hundreds of these to send. If I sent 8x10s and 16x20s
I would most certainly go broke. I hope you understand.

What is a Title 1 school, you may be wondering?
According to the U.S. Department of Education the purpose of Title 1 funding, “is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education and reach, at minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.”
The basic principles of Title 1 state that schools with large concentrations of low-income students will receive supplemental funds to assist in meeting student’s educational goals. Low-income students are determined by the number of students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. For an entire school to qualify for Title 1 funds, at least 40% of students must enroll in the free and reduced lunch program.

These students are most at risk for failure, and living at or below poverty levels. Let's make a difference in the lives of the students at East Side Community High School. Go vote, please.
