Has anyone ever tried one of these? They clip to your mask and looks like a small dentist mirror... it supposedly allows good rear-view visibility for monitoring buddies or dive groups.

Anyone care to give comments?

Don't know about them, but maybe it would help me keep an eye on my snorkel as it floats off.

Shouldn't this be posted in the humor forum?

Does it resemble this?

Kind of reminds me of the rear view mirrors for cyclists.

Yup those are the ones... I saw a set at my LDS and was wondering if anyone here has tried them :)

Ok... here's resurrecting an old thread... yes, I actually did it - I bought one of these (as posted by Cbulla) from my lds a week ago. It's a "gadget" "gizmo" "dohicky" etc.. but honestly, it really does work. Overall I really enjoyed my dive more with it on my mask...

Pros:
1)Could see my buddy the entire dive, less than 30 seconds of the entire dive was she out of my view with this thing on... great wide angle.
2)Not expensive (especially if you get them from the link above for only $4)
3)Did not get in the way during S-drills (which we did several of to make sure)
4)Did not block my view any more than the rearview mirror in my car does.

Cons:
1)Makes storing the mask cumbersome
2)Easily dislodged from the mask, which means it could get lost easily
3)Is a perfect example of a rule #6 violation ;)
4)Only helps you keep track of your buddy if your buddy stays on one side consistently

So call me what you will, I liked this little "gadget" and plan on continuing to use it, though I may find another way to attach it more securely and permanently.

Aloha, Tim

Personally, I prefer the high tech approach. I'm waiting for a butt cam with HUD screen.

Is that the cam featured in Jessicas movie "Into The Blue"?????

I think something that is really needed is directional signals on all divers.

They exist, but I refuse to hijack another thread...... Today

Of course, we could make the observation that kidspot's buddy should never BE where he couldn't easily see her WITHOUT a rear view mirror, right?

Ok, I hate to start another thread for this but I would also like to know the "Rules of Diving"

Either Hijack or PM me......or....I will start a thread. I mean it. Not kidding. Don't force me to do it. ;)

well... it's kinda hard to stay in my periphery when I'm inverted looking under a rock - right Lynne? Oh - and 80% of the dive I could just have turned my head and seen you on my right, but with this thing I didn't even need to turn my head... I did once in a while, just so you'd know I could see ya' but I didn't need to ;) - also remember I have NO peripheral vision, even without my mask on lol

as to the rule#6 violation thingy - post the question about rules in the DIR forum... it's their most often quoted rule ;) Second most commonly quoted rule is #1 "don't dive with unsafe divers" and I can't remeber off hand what 2-5 are is the reason I won't post them ;)

Aloha, Tim

Now I would think #6 would be #1. Most of the time....that is the most referred to rule of all in most circles. :) Everything else refers to Rule #1.

Kidspot do you have a back up beeper when you are using that thing? :D I think this would also help with rule #6.

Do you also have to have a pocket installed on your wetsuit with a pocket protector with pens when you wear this? Oops...that would also violate Rule #6 also wouldn't it? Just want to check before I get into trouble. :D

Ooooh come on.....I know I am a weak person. I just couldn't resist. ;)

That WOULD be very ANTI #6....but funny! If he had the beeper then he could be DIR...diving in reverse. (rim shot)

I vote crpntr133's as post of the day; in spite of the powerade up my nose

.I vote crpntr133's as post of the day; in spite of the powerade up my nose I cast my vote for TJMills and the pocket protector!

I could have used a rear view mirror during a Molokini night dive 2 nights ago. Out on the dropoff of the center reef I first noticed a grey reef shark when he was an arm's length above and to the right, going away from me. My buddy came over and was shaking me, pointing at the shark, and slapping me on the back. On the boat he told me that the shark came up on me so close that he thought the grey was going to take a chunk out of my rear end. A rear view mirrror would have given me some warning. :)

That is one funky looking looking set-up.
I remember a looong time ago (late 80's) I bought a tri-view mask that advertised you could see behind you by looking into the side lens. The lens reflected an image that was behind you. I decided to buy it because it fit me really well.
After diving with this mask for a while I finally noticed a reflection off the side lenses and sure as hell I could see behind me. I loved that mask for that reason.
Don't think I'll be trying that rear view mirror anytime soon though...
