As much as I'd like to say great pix (and they are- don't mind my sour grapes), we got skunked during our week just a few weeks before.

FANTASTIC! I've never seen one yet! Hopefully that will change in November when I go to the Maldives! It supposed to be whaleshark season then.

Thanks for sharing.

What was the water temperature?

High 60's at Wolf and Darwin. May have touched 70. Low 60's further south.

If anyone ever gets a fairly clear straight on shot of the left side of a whale shark behind the gills please send it to the Ecocean database people. There is a report form on their website for any encounters. ECOCEAN Whale Shark Photo-identification Library (http://www.whaleshark.org)

The ECOCEAN Whale Shark Photo-identification Library is a visual database of whale shark (Rhincodon typus) encounters and of individually catalogued whale sharks. The library is maintained and used by marine biologists to collect and analyse whale shark encounter data to learn more about these amazing creatures.
Details are found here: Photographing for the ECOCEAN Whale Shark Photo-identification Library (http://www.whaleshark.org/photographing.jsp?langCode=en) - basically they use NASA technology to identify the dot pattern - it's like their fingerprint. This is what they're optimally looking for:

http://www.whaleshark.org/whaleshark_example.jpg

They can also use right side patterning or photos of any unique scarring. My buddy shot and reported one in Utila last year. Whenever it's re-spotted he gets an e-mail update.

RJP, you suck. (:

So, I'm guessing you don't want me to post the pics of the other five encounters? Or the video?
