I have been trying to find a superb rescue course to take. I notice that UTD offers a rescue course on their website, but no other information about it is provided. Can anyone on the board here tell me more and perhaps let me know what it is like? Can you tell me how it compares to PADI, NAUI, etc?

Thanks ahead of time.

Here's the best and most comprehensive rescue course program in SoCal, and also helps support the operation & facilities of the Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber.

Have you taken it? What certs does it cover? What makes it the most comprehensive? I was interested in taking it but getting info from them is impossible.

From my NAUI experice you take the instructor not the class.. My instructor personally updated the old YMCA book and he teaches from it. (He's been in EMS for a few decades, and a Public Safety Diver since the 80's (he helped develop the program locally in the 80's) So we probably got more indepth than the average Rescue Cert class...

The Chamber facility is an extension of the L.A. County/USC Medical Center Emergency Room and is part of the countywide Medical Alert Center (MAC). You will have full support of hyperbaric chamber personnel (of which I'm a volunteer member) and LA County Lifeguard/Baywatch Paramedics from Catalina (Two-Harbors Station).

The courses are set-up to provide basic first responder rescue diver training, all the way up to continuing education credit for professional Diver Medic Technician training and certification.

You may potentially witness a real dive accident come in, and see the entire Emergency Medical Services chain in action (US Coast Guard Helicopter lands victim; Baywatch Paramedics/Hyperbaric Crew treating patient inside Chamber; attending ER Physician and Hyperbaric Specialist Dr. Sipsy flying in from the mainland via LA County Sheriff's Helicopter. . .)

Would you really travel from Baltimore to a UTD instructor (James in MI is probably the closest) for a rescue course??

Well I was thinking of having someone travel in, but if the course was good enough then i sure would. I might just do that for the catalina course.

I've been looking for a really good Rescue course as well. Keep me posted Tim.

The Catalina course does look great. Might be worth the trip ...
