Boattech, Do ya dive from a boat. Cabezon are all over, now with kelp dieing off you can see them easier, likewise. Dive sites, the cabezon is use to divers, any where else they run. I have shot them down to a couple hundred feet down, and in 9' in the sound.

You live on Bainbridge, ask local fishermen where they have reeled them in, or just go out and dive any where and you will find where they hang on your Island.

Boil a bit of your cabby in 7-up it will taste like lobster. You have till the 30th for the season.

Now remember crab opens in area 9, so if ya have a boat you can go there and shoot cabe and get crab.

Happy Diving

This is the last hunting with my wife just for caby.84876 We were practicing for Ling, cause of travel diving we were gone until Ling opened.84877 This was 2009.

They are the most fun to spear, and love to give a fight.

Happy Diving.

There fast, maybe a sling, pneumatic gun is a good gun in our waters, yet i have rubber band them to. I can reload fast with pneumatic, and they last ten years before any maintenance.

cressi or mares are here local for tips and shafts.

The absolute best Cabi and Ling hunts I have ever had are from out of LaPush, from (south) destruction rock to (north) to cape alava. Look at the area on google earth. Must have a good GPS with good chart of the area these charts will show rocks, and a good depth finder. You find good hunts within 1 mile of the launch.

Yes it is good hunting, the fog is a thing that makes it that you need a gps, so you can go back to marina. Diving is fun, and two ling a day also.

This looks like the right thread to post in. So I am starting to get back in to the underwater world (I was focusing on my education for awhile). I tend to like a good challenge and would love to get into freedive spear-fishing. Any tips/ direction I should look/ people I should talk to? I'm located in the Northwest in the Kitsap county region. I'm looking to hunt somewhere around here/ driveable distance. I have always wanted to try the san juans also.

You bet VDGM your right, the fog can be reaallly thick at times. But the cabbie and ling hunting are out of this world. Must be the fog that keeps the hunting so good. I've also had days out there when you can see Vancouver Island.

Cabezon is one of our best tasting fish in Northern California. I do not take Cabezon or Lingcod during mating season or when guarding eggs. Areas have been overfished due to our higher population in California and localized fishing. There was a cove nicknamed Lingcod Cove. A couple of Lingcod tournaments each Spring and the name reverted back to original.

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/marine/status/cabezon.pdf

Discusses mating season for California and Washington.

I use the shortest Mares Sten called a Snubnose with rotating spearpoint.

cmburch, I also have the mares snub, It is a great gun, cabezon is like lobster if you boil in 7up, take a little at a time and you will no how long to boil for for your desired taste.

lings are on eggs now, maybe cabe's also, I just never see them on there eggs.

when i was stationed at ft. lewis we'd go out hunting almost every weekend
Lots of ling everywhere, especially where shallow water areas would be surrounded by deep.
Used a band gun in open areas and pnuematic gun around rocks (tacoma narrows).
