Why are there cumberbuns? They're creepy. Um, first of all, they're "cummerbunds" (or, rarely, cumberbunds.) They serve to cover the otherwise odd gap between the end of the shirtfront detail and the waistband of the trousers, and provide an appropriate aesthetic analog to a belt. If you have a decently made one, it has a very small pocket sufficient for the theater tickets and the car valet claim stub, since you should not be carrying these things (or anything) in your trouser pockets. This is very handy. (If carefully fitted for it, you can get away with putting these things in the inside jacket pockets, but these are awkward to fish around in; the cummerbund pocket is superior for this use.)
