Hello all,

My first time using scubaboard.com. Hoping this will help me get off my butt and into the water. My parents have a condo in Orange beach next to the florabama. I would like to start diving the jetties at perdido pass. I was wondering what the best way to enter the water was and where a safe loaction to dive (will have a flag of course) would be. Any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

It would be easier If I were to hijack your parents Condo and show you exactly where to enter the water in person. We could even drive down together. Most important is you will want to dive at high tide. Wjefferis has some good links with maps.

Welcome to ScubaBoard! It's been quiet around here for the last few months, but things are about to start kicking.

The best way to dive Perdido Pass is to get into your car and drive to Ft. Pickens  Seriously, you will have better consistency at Pickens, the entry is much easier, and the water clarity is generally better. There is a full description here: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/5169596-post18.html

If you simply MUST dive Perdido Pass, then you can learn a bunch here: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/5446165-post19.html It is a good dive, but in my experience, you have to be lucky to find clear water, plus, entry/exit can be a challenge with gear on.

Since you are in Orange Beach, do yourself a favor and grab lunch or dinner at Shipps Harbour Grill Shipp's Harbour Grill - Fine Waterfront Dining in Orange Beach, Alabama It's almost worth a drive from Mobile just to eat there... in fact, it is worth the drive as I've done it a few times myself :eyebrow:

Can you dive off of a pontoon boat at Ft. Pickings. I've heard of the Sugar Bowl in this area. Is that suitable for diving?

Right now Perdido Pass water is looking great. I think Perdido is more diverse than Pickens altho Pickens is a great dive. there is at least 4 ways to dive Perdido Pass.

Ft. Pickens is a shore dive. There's other stuff to dive in the Bay (that you could dive from a pontoon), but the only spots I've tried are private.

Thanks for the good info. I won't be down that way until April 2. But I plan to dive Saturday and Sunday anywhere I can.

I will be in orange beach this weekend and I wanted to dive the jetties. After all of the rain we got how do you think it will be? Low vis? no life? I would appreciate any advice or other locations that people may be diving this weekend.

I was there this past week just before the rain came. Teaming with life even in the shallows 10-15 ft. down. The sediments that would have been kicked up by the wind/rains will have long settled by this weekend. I went to the Jetties on Wednesday after most of the storm had subsided and everything was looking good.
