Kayaker Rare Shark: Kayaker Has Close Encounter with Huge Rare Shark - ktla.com

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (KTLA) -- A kayaker made a pretty bold move off the coast of Florida. He saw a huge shark, and jumped in the water!

Josh Reeves works for a shark tour guide company, so when he saw a rare "basking shark" off the Panama City Coast, he couldn't believe it. Basking sharks are very large -- about 20 to 30 feet long.

Reeves paddled the tourists right up to the shark, then he jumped in.

A local commercial fisherman was able to catch the whole thing on video.

Reeves says his kayak was about 14 feet long, and the shark was more than double the size of the kayak.

He says he wasn't scared because that species of shark usually only eats krill and plankton.

Lucky fellow. Lucky for us someone was there with a camera handy. Imagine the people on the pier that probably thought that was jaws though.
