Hi! Headed to Medano Beach in Cabo in Dec w/ wife & child, wanna get a coupla dive days in while there. Seems like Cabo's not a favorite from members here, huh?

Coupla Qs:

1) Anyone familiar w/ Cabo "sandfalls" along the canyon in San Lucas Bay? Worthwhile?

2) Any spots where there might be some photo ops w/ sharks or other pelagics or non-pinniped marine life?

3) Any drift dives?

4) Anything unique to that area worth diving?

Thanks in advance!

Cabo San Lucas has a couple of decent places to dive.

The "sand falls" you're referring to are located in Cabo San Lucas bay between Pelican Rock and Land's End. They vary in size, but it's not uncommon to see the vertical falls at about 90fsw or shallower on the shelf just off Pelican Rock. They are a sight to see, and coupled with the topography and reef at Pelican Rock may make a nice dive or two.

Pelagics are best viewed on a trip to Gordo Banks, or Cabo Pulmo. Gordo is located in the East Cape and is about an hour away by boat. Pulmo is about 60 miles north of San Jose and is a dive resort that has a very long reef structure just off the shore and is a marine preserve. It's definitely worth the drive up as there is much more life than CSL. You can also do drift dives here, in fact it's common for the panga to drop you off and pick you up downcurrent.

If you have the chance, try to dive Cabo Pulmo. That reef is the reason I come back to Cabo year after year :-)

There is also some great macro life(frogfish, seahorses, nudibranchs) if you dive in front of the old cannery in Cabo San Lucas.. We also get some big pelagics near the sandfalls and at lands end....

If your interested in diving the area I would highly recommend contacting Casey at Dive Nautilus(casey@divenautilus.com). He mainly does ccr diving but hes able to organize some great trips and all his gear etc.. is very good quality

:D
