Ok, so it's not out yet, but will be in about 3 to 4 weeks. Watch for more soon. This is a VERY funny book, filled with stories illustrating the need for rules of etiquette among divers and just what they should be. Rule cover live aboards, day boats, underwater, talking, apres dive, and more. I know. My wife and I wrote it and just approved the final galley proofs. Stand by....

"tlaking" is a typo for talking, and that section is about when and where to give (and not give) advice, how to tell a godd story , and so on. "Apres dive," or "after diving" is about moving stuff from the boat, gear rinsing ( where and where not), and stuff like that.

A copy of thehe book will be sent to a whole bunch of dive shops nation wide, and we hope they all stock it. There will be a web site where you can buy direct from us, ( or amazon or barnesandnoble.com as well as the publisher- just not quite yet) and I think it may be a good idea to offer free shipping to SB members. We'll figure out a secret code for that. Stand by!

Are you going to print it in Japanese by any chance?
After my experience on a day boat out to the GBR when I was in Australia, I think there's a group that should read it.

I was just being a smart ass about the typo, but I honestly didn't know what the word apres meant.
Thanks.

WOW!

I have more books and magazines on recreational diving than any one person should have, yet I am always looking for newer exciting approaches to a well thrashed subject. I thought possibly your offering might be refreshing...

Then I "googled" your book on Amazon.com...WOW!

It would prudent of you to not direct prospective customers to Amazon.com. There is a southern gentleman from the great commonwealth of Virigina who is less than impresed with you book.:

Alternate title: "How to make the author's happy when diving with them.", June 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Scuba Snobs' Guide to Diving Ettiquette (Paperback)
The authors of this book are self-admitted snobs and they are correct in their admission.

While this book does go over some basic etiquette for the novice diver, it's really just a long-winded attempt by two curmudegonly old people to tell you all of the ways you can make them happy should you end up on a boat with them.

Overall, It offers more "don'ts" than "do's" and really does not provide much genuine information for the novice diver. In fact, most of the advice is complete common sense. Gems include: "Don't puke on other divers." "Talk only when appropriate and limit yourself to proper content." "Practice proper hygenie on liveaboards."

Chapter six offers one bright spot as it deals with underwater etiquette and safety. It provides excellent information on how to get the most out of your dive without spoiling it for others.

The book ends with a tongue-in-cheek appology in case they offended anyone. Appology accepted. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that they were just trying to be funny for fifty six pages.

Overall, it's a humorous read for experienced divers, but is not a good investment for those new to diving. Unless of course, you lack basic common sense and courtesy. Of course, you wouldn't consider buying this book if you didn't posess those qualities.

I would write a lenghtier review, however, the authors of The Scuba Snobs Guide to Etiquette have asked me to get off of their lawn. "

The book is intended to be humorous and entertaining, even a little sarcastic and debate inducing. The advice given is proper and insightful, thanks for acknowledging that. It is not a training book- it is a fun book, and we hope everyone will read it as such. It does not pretend to be anything else. And remember, "a scuba snob is a person who loves diving, is an active diver, who has developed and demonstrates excellent diving skills and expects the same of others." We mention new divers and how we love to dive with them because they have retained their training and not yet gotten lazy or developed bad habits. Read it before you judge it. If there is bad advice, call us on it. If it makes you laugh or smile, then it did its job. Lighten up people- there are plenty of "how to" manuals in the scuba world. This anecdotal collection will ring true for most of the divers out there. Have a laugh.

Our dive shop told me that the review copy you sent has arrived, thanks much for the courtesy.

By the time I returned to the shop from leading open water training dives, one of our divemasters had opened it and was three-quarters of the way through it. He thinks it's both funny and good info. When I can get my hands on it I'll chime in with my two cents.

Dive Bug Bit Me

Good light hearted reading. Nice way to put my mind in neutral and just relax for a bit.

Oh, to the authors, I believe that my dive computer should be dropped in the camera basin after the dive. Does that make me a scuba pig? Otherwise, I am in full agreement and have been on the receiving end of many of the same blunders. Then again a couple of hundred dives ago, I was probably doing the same.

Just bought the Kindle version and read it. Wonderful! You two are welcome dive buddies any time you come to Curacao, although down here if we see people standing on the coral we turn off their tanks and then get them with the speargun on the way up. It's a special Curacao Snob law. If you guys come I'll teach you, the only trick is to lead them with the speargun a little if they are ascending to fast!

Thanks for the laughs.

Dennis the Divemaster,

Many, many years ago I began partipating in an activity called for lack of a descriptive name "goggleing," which later became skindiving and is now known as recreational diving. As the sport progressed I became a Magophile/Bibliophile of the sport and began my collecting over 65 years ago. a very brief summary is as fillows:

A complete bound set of "Skin Diver" magazine (1951 to it's demise) including every diving equipment catalog published and all Underwater Film Festival programs. This is the only set of its kind in existence any where in the world.

Complete bound sets of “Dive”, “NDA News”, American Scuba Diver”, Aquarius”, "Water World", "Underwater", "Fathom", "Sport Diving”, "Underwater Photographer",” California Diver,” “ Pacific Diver”, “SCUBA PRO Diving and Snorkeling”, “Diving and Snorkeling Quarterly” “Ocean Realm”, all of which are no longer published. Maintain and bind current sets of “Dive Training”, “Sport Diver”, Historical Diver” (USA), “Historical Diving Times” (UK), and “HDS Notizie” (Italy).

The only known complete set of “Pacific and Atlantic Underwater News”, published from 1966 to 1971. It was the first newspaper devoted entirely to the underwater world.

The largest and most complete set of civilian dive training manuals begining with the Spaco manual of 1949 to 1980.

All the USN diving manuals beginning with the original 1905 "Manual for Divers" to the USN's conversion to electronic format

I have collected and maintain an extensive 1500 plus volume diving library, the majority of which are rare out of print books. Many have been personally inscribed by the authors who were also friends and diving companions,in addition to being noted diving authorities.

A bound edition of James Dugan's 1948 "First of the menfish" which introduced J.Y. Cousteau and self contained diving to the US

In May 1996 I organized and hosted the very first US diving bibliophile meeting. It was attended by diving bibliophiles from the western US and via telephone from throughout the US and by letter from bibliophiles from across the world.

<<< Upon my demise the entire collection with be inherited by my son Dr. Sam IV, who is a NAUI (life) PADI instructor, Pro 5000 diver and an ER & Hyperbaric doctor. >>>

But I donot have an inscribed copy of your 65 page book SCUBA SNOBS!

The horror of it all..........

Ok, so I bought it on Kindle and read it in one sitting. (it is very short)

TBH, I can't recommend it, while some bits made me laugh (a little), I found Dennis to be the butt of too many jokes, and Debbie to be a little overbearing - especially in her evisceration of fellow divers. I consider myself a polite buddy, but would be too afraid to share a boat with Debbie for fear of incurring her wrath. The book read like a litany of complaints written by a grumpy person. Most of the advice on how to avoid their displeasure is pretty basic and involves keeping quiet, not urinating on board boats and abstaining from vomiting on other people.

I so wanted it to be funny and entertaining, as it would have been a great Xmas gift for diver friends.... Also, it is a bit expensive for something so short.

Sorry for the negative review. I DO applaud you for giving it a go and I would encourage you to try again. Perhaps a compendium of short funny diving stories? I bet if you started a thread asking for such stories, the scubaboarders would regurgitate many a fantastic tale to fill your next volume? Such a book would then be genuinely funny and a worthwhile purchase.

Just my 0.2c...

Yeh if you have a wee look at the "Shark" forum there's been an on going battle with Amazon starting with their selling of Shark Fin Cake, this was removed about a month ago I believe due to overwhelming negative public opinion. They also sell Mako and Thresher shark meat both of which are on the IUCN Endangered list. I have been writing to them and posting reviews on these products I would urge you to do the same if you feel similarly. Thank you. Im in the process of organizing something on "reddit" unfortunately I don't do Facebook, but it sounds like a good idea I might have to re think that one.

There is a good length exerpt from this book in the current issue of Undercurrent, a fine on-line dive magazine (undercurrent.org). Hi Divemaster Dennis.

As an Undercurrent dive magazine subscriber, I just read the excerpts from your great book "Scuba Snobs' Guide to Dive Etiquette". Excellent! You and Debbie so adequately penned what many of us know and have observed as we dive the oceans of the world and try to enjoy our favorite dive sites, or try new ones. This is quite difficult to do at times when there are many divers who have NOT A CLUE about simple common sense, let alone respect for other divers and the delicate underwater environment.

Anyway, great job and I am going to look for your book on Amazon to see if I can get it on my Kindle.

Every liveaboard and dive shop should offer your book when divers book trips and underwater outings. Good stuff!

Thank you and Debbie for your contribution and safe diving...

The authors were on Scubaradio each Saturday from November 26 through December 17 (upcoming this week), at the start of hour #2, talking dive etiquette, sort of, at the beginning of the second hour of the show. You can listen to past shows at scubaradio.com, and stream the show live from 3 to 5 pm Eastern time at that same website. Those of you who listen to scuba radio will not be surprised that the puking, peeing and other similar aspects of the book are front and center, but there is other stuff too. Sort of. A little bit. Listen if you dare.

Purchased the ebook, and just finished it. You are both good writers, the book is entertaining. I love the dive stories especially about the 60 year old woman lol. Just finished the Kindle version on my ipad. Fun easy read. Amazing how many of these types we see while diving. I have to admit to rinsing my wetsuit in the tub designated for them. I never pee in my suit and didn't think about what someone else might be dipping. May have to rethink this.

You missed a major offender, the person who moves or messes with someone elses equipment.

Last year, at Roatan we had an old guy, my age, wearing a speedo. He would do his stretching exercises in front of the young females on the boat. Of course, they would get up and move leaving him with a puzzled look on his face.

Thanks for the smile you put on my face.

I just read it while walking on the treadmill--something for all divers to aspire to. When is the sequel coming out?
Thanks for sharing, and I hope to get one of your cool log book stamps some day.

The sequel should be available sometime in the summer of 2012. Longer, more stories, more rules- including snorkeler interaction and group travel stuff. Thanks to the thousands who have bought the first book already! We promise to announce the second one here on scuba board!

We were pleasantly surprised to meet a few people on this trip that read our book before we got here. We enjoyed the guy at a local dive shop who commented on the rules, with a smile! Apparantly there are a lot of scuba snobs on Maui, or who visit Maui, or who dive Maui.

From Amazon Canada:

By
Fred: (http://www.amazon.ca/gp/pdp/profile/A20PSVIWAMVUR6/ref=cm_cr_pr_pdp) The Scuba Snobs' Guide to Diving Ettiquette (Paperback)

This book is a quick and pleasant read with important information for all new divers and perhaps some good reminders for the veterans. We have all been taught and continue to work on our diving techniques, but no one else so clearly teaches the social conventions associated with scuba diving. Many, if not most of the book's lessons can be generalized under the heading of "Practice Good Manners". However, the authors deal with some "rules" for situations that Dear Abby would never have covered. The authors provide useful thoughts, often illustrated by humourous anecdotes, on such matters as avoiding underwater crowding, expected behaviour on dive boats, and a host of other situaions. Staying slightly above and behind other divers is a great tip. My only criticism of the book is that it is too short in length. I await the sequel and hope it is loaded with more anecdotes. People can be boorish anywhere. A crowded diveboat and an underwater group dive both provide great opportunities for the most humourous examples of poor behaviour. After reading this book, hopefully divers will have a little more incentive to keep in mind that diving is usually a shared experience. We should all be dive snobs if it means taking that little bit of extra care for each other. For those who refuse, they should be prepared to read about themselves as the dive snobs expose their boorishness in the next volume.

This short review recently from amazon.co.uk:
The book was very good and my son-in-law loved it, he has just starting scuber diving and found the book great.
For those of you from Canada, in what part of the Country do you say "scuber?"

Not sure if or where where I have heard "scuber" in my travels. Anyone?
