Hello, I belong to a local marine aquarium society that usually has guest speakers once a month and felt many of you might be interested in our speaker this month. Zack Jud, a doctoral candidate in Marine Biology at Florida International University in Miami (and an avid reef hobbyist) will talk to us about his lionfish research.
Zacks research focuses on a variety of human interactions in marine systems. A major component of his work involves identifying the impacts of invasive lionfish (Pterois volitans / P. miles) in the western Atlantic and Caribbean. Zack identified the first known estuarine intrusion of invasive lionfish, and is currently conducting experiments to identify lionfish diets, growth rates, and movement patterns in Florida waters.
On May 24th, Zack will present his ongoing lionfish research, outlining the history of the lionfish invasion in the Atlantic and Caribbean, identifying potential factors that may have allowed the species to become so successful outside of their native range, and discussing the future of lionfish in our waters. A number of myths and misconceptions regarding the lionfish invasion will be addressed, including common theories regarding control and eradication.
You do not have to be a Florida Marine Aquarium Society member to attend our meetings. If you are interested in attending the meeting, the meeting will take place tomorrow, May 24th (I apologize for the short notice.) We meet at South Plantation HS; 1300 Southwest 54th Avenue; Plantation, FL 33317-5402; (754) 323-1950. The meetings start at 7pm.
