Date Sunk: 1/17/24 Cause: Foundered

Propulsion: Coal-fired steam Location N33° 51.552'/W77° 09.373'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIVING NOTES:
Diving Depths: 90-110 ft.
Current: slight to moderate
Visibility: Usually in excess in 60 feet
Summer Temperature:low 80s in summer
Points of Interest: Intact bow and stern with high relief; two boilers, engine; rudder and propeller and spare propeller; port and starboard anchors;
Fish/Animal Life: The usually NC marine animals inhabit this wreck - amberjacks, spadefish, baitfish and barracudas. This wreck also seems to be inhabited with many species which inhabit more tropical waters - angelfish, lobster, african pampano, hogfish, etc.
Description:The Normannia is one of the prettiest wrecks off of North Carolina. Generally, it lies on it keel and is contiguous. The bow and stern are relatively intact and provide the greatest relief. The middle section is flat and open. The wreck site is easy to navigate on and wreck can be covered in one dive with a little bit of concentration. Old bottles are still being found at various parts of this wreck.

The Diver Down may not be the only boat in Morehead City, but for the best in customer appreciation and out and out fun Diver Down is the only boat to go out on. Go out when the others stay at home, and see more than just the in shore wrecks like Olympus takes you too. DIver down gives you two off shore wrecks to pick from a day. Not a better captain, crew or boat will you find anywhere!!!! Signed a permanent Diver Down Customer

Most of the trips I have done with Olympus are offshore. (Tired of the Indra) Diver Down is good too although I prefer Olympus.

You do know that the boat leaves dock at 6:30am every day? Heard you liked afternoon dives...? http://www.scubaboard.com/t38553.html

Jer & I are thinking about doing the October trip again this year. That'll give him plenty of time to get his training and experience levels ready...

Ya' know, I am not at all a morning person. I really hate getting up before 8am, and I'm grateful for the flexible hours of my work.

But on a dive trip, I'll do whatever it takes! Go to bed early & sober, regardless of what the others are doing, then get up at 6am, or 5am - whatever it takes. I'm often the first one in line at the dock, anywhere.

I love naps, though, and will catch one anytime I have an hour free. On these trips, I'll catch one on the way to the wrecks, another on the way back, and a third before supper. Eat, sleep, board, eat, sleep, dive, eat, dive, sleep, rinse gear, sleep, start over.

Diverlady,
If you get the chance...it's worth every minute. I dove about 50 dives on the Diver Down last year...I was working on the trip that DandyDon was on. Any time you want to come to nc diving just let me know and we'll get you set up

Don't forget Hatteras. Our wreck diving is just as good or better than the Moorehead area and we don't have to share the wrecks with a gazillion other boats and divers. Plus, due to our shorter boat rides we don't leave until 8 AM or 9 AM depending on which boat you're on. During peak season we also run afternoon dives - meet at the dock around 2 PM.

We've also got a new wreck to dive a lot of you may be interested in - the U-701. We'll be running charters to this almost virgin wreck when conditions and experience levels permit.

I dove the 701 a few years back and it was pretty much sanded in...have they done something to improve it? Here's a couple of pics.

I am moving to NC in a few months. What would be some good boats to look into going out with and how would I get in contact with them?

Feel free to PM me.

depends on where in NC your moving to, and the type of diving you want to do.

Camp Lejuene.

I like the type of diving that you do underwater.

ok, well, as far as that was a helpful answer, your in luck, you'll be able to do all your diving underwater.

however, if your into shore diving, your out of luck, unless the only thing you want to look at is miles of sand.

hope your not into reefs, cause their aren't any.

hope your into long boat rides to shipwrecks, cause thats all there is in NC.

and bring your wetsuit.

the reason i asked what kind of diving you like is because there are a lot of people in NC who will not dive in NC because it's all boat diving (2 to 3 hours to the dive sites), the weather is often a problem (hurricane season June to October), conditions are often rough (3-5 foot seas are common), the sites are wrecks (?? experiance level ??), and wetsuits are recommended (some people don't dive unless water temp is in the 80s).

Otherwise, Lejune is in a good spot, your an hour from Morehead City on one side, and Wrightsville Beach on the other, both have charters going out all week long.

yup, sure is, but that won't keep some of us from diving. just be prepared for cancelled charters or 6 foot seas.

nothin quite like a carolina ladder ride after a great dive
