Anyone hear about a lost diver last Saturday? This is a Google translate from Por Esto:

COZUMEL, June 22 .- While saying ignore the reason why he was not told about the disappearance of José Manuel Cocom diver who was lost last Saturday to be diving on the East Coast, the owner of Harbor Master in Cozumel Francisco Quiñones Quiñones reported that could be because they are not fully legal documentation water operators, but they are doing research.
The respondent acknowledged that the owner of the vessel "Greedy II", Raúl Marcial Mijangos, never notified about the missing diver José Manuel Cocom, if they found out what happened when Naval personnel on the island Sector notified.

The boat Greedy II is a very small panga that is privately owned and operated by locals for spearfishing. That is why the harbor master did not have any knowledge of it. Perhaps the report was made to other authorities.

We have no idea as to the outcome of the missing diver but I will post more as it comes out.

Thanks for the info Dave. I guess that shows why you take all the precautions you do on the east side.

Bummer,

When there two weeks ago we spent a couple of afternoons over at Chen Rio. There were several pangas of locals out spear fishing that landed there both days. I would guess the missing diver might be part of these groups. I chatted one guy up, they were out spearing snappers of some sort. Little ones at that.

Sorry, I can barely order off of a menu in Coz.

Native freedivers are notorious for diving only with mask and fins. In wear a snorkel vest swimming or on a dive boat, but no one else ever does. I have hell getting my family to wear the ones I gave them.

Shallowwater blackout is but one risk to freediving, but if I do one - at least I can make myself float well if I think I might passout on ascent.

My Spanish is definitely better than Google's, give me a cite and I'll give you an accurate translation (I was only one class short of a minor in Spanish literature).

Don,

No, if the question was directed at me. The guys I saw at Chen Rio were unloading many empty tanks along with coolers filled with their catch.

I don't know of any "fisherman" who free dives. They all use tanks...few with any scuba training!
