I dunno ... but I'd sure like to see someone try keeping that thing upright in any kind of wind.

... and why would it matter if it's DIR or not?

If the seas are that rough to justify, I am betting it's not DIR to continue the dive.

I wasn't able to find anything formal that describes the required qualities of an SMB. The ability to inflate by various methods, and a bag built to retain air even if it falls over, would seem to be intuitive. An overpressure valve would also seem necessary, if the bag is closed. It appears this bag has all those things.

Whether you would ever want something that large is a good question. It would be somewhat more difficult to manage unless shot VERY deep, or on the surface. If you were in a place where you had the possibility of being blown a LONG way off the boat, or where surface swells are enormous, it might be useful. But as already mentioned, at that point, a DIR diver would be assessing the risks of the dive, and quite probably deciding they were too high.

there isn't a "DIR Answer" for every possible piece of gear thought up by the dive industry.

an SMB that big though is going to be difficult to keep fully inflated and upright, which will defeat the purpose of it being so tall, however.

Carter makes one that is similar, and my buddy uses it all the time.. you just got to get air in it quick to pump it up well.

The boat I was on in Cozumel passed his group as they were decompressing and I could easily see his from a distance. He carries it as he had some friends lost as sea in the past and wants to make sure if he's in swells he has a better chance to be seen.

I don't have one... yet..
