Dove last weekend with my new DIR hoses (single tank) -7' primary, 24" backup (Apeks), and 24" SPG hose....

what can I say, the 7' hose is definatelly feels great! comfortable and way more streamlined! But, the 24" SPG was just weired! It was way too short for me to clip to the left hip D-Ring, and if when I did manage to clip it, there was no way fo rme to look at the guage, or to even reach out and unclip it.

I dive Dry, with 30cf stage on the side. and a single OMS 125 LP tank. So instead, I clipped the SPG to the left strap D-ring, and it seems perfect fo rthe time being, but I am curious who the hell do you DIR folks use it with my type of configuration when it's clipped to the left hip D-ring like on those DIR pictures that I;ve seen on the web. By the way, with thick gloves, it was kinda hard to unclip the small bolt snap, I may need to get it replaced with a really bug bolt snap.

When and for what do you utilize an SPG Karl?

I've heard of people having problem with the 24" HP hose. The DIR answer is to either move your tank down or get a slightly longer hose.

I also know that some people do clip the SPG to the left shoulder, so whatever works for you. Don't worry about what's DIR unless you plan to do DIRF or progress through GUE courses. My HP hose is freakishly long, so I can read it just by looking down.. I've been paying more attention lately, so I only need to look at it 4 or 5 times on the average dive.. and I'm always pretty spot on with where I expect to be, so I do plan on moving to the shorter hose.

Another question on that Subject. I have to Oxycheq single tank 45# wing. and the infl. hose that came with it is way too long. The same problem with my other OMS 45# wing... the hoses were just too long. (single tank diving) what do you recommend I replace it with? what length is more appropriate so that it's not too long and not too short.

Thanks,
VT

I am not DIR but dive the same setup.

I have found the 24" HP hose works great with double tanks but not with single tanks. For a single tank you need about a 28"-29" hose or close to that. I dont dive singles to often but when i do i just use the 32" hose that came with my SPG although it is a little long. Eventually i am gonna buy a 28"-29" HP hose.

I use a large bolt snap with my SPG. It makes clipping and unclipping a breeze compared to the smaller ones when using thick gloves or dry gloves in my case.

Yeah... I routed that 24" hose under my arm and clipped it to my left shoulder D-ring, and it's perfect now. not need to unclip it, just pull it slitghtly forward and look down to get the reading. no hassle. I guess I am leaving it this way for now.

My second question, (see above) is what size hose to get for the Wing. the current one is way too long and sticks out like crazy. very annoying!

It all depends on how long your inflator/deflator hose is. You should be able to measure from your inflator to your 1st stage to see what you need. The hose on mine is 24" and works with both my single tank and double tank set ups.

DIR is a good idea but a bad approach by most people who apply it. I also think it is really a good marketing scheme for Halcyon equipment

Umm... They sell backplates that last forever, wings that last almost as long, and harnesses that are replaced by web belt that they don't sell.

They don't sell regulators or drysuits.

In fact the only continuing source of income they have is divelights since people flood them out from time to time.

That isn't the crappiest business plan I have ever seen, but it's pretty close.

Are you talking about the inflator hose... from the first stage to the inflator? Or are you talking about the corrigated hose... from the inflator to the wing itself?

I have a 36# pioneer and it seems to fit just fine there, with the 24" inflator hose and the stock corrigated hose. However on my doubles with a Dive Rite wing, it was way way to long. I shortened it, and shortened it again, to 12" and it's still a little too long, and not the inflator hose is a little too long.

I think one of the big mitigating factors with the corrigated hose length is how high up your d ring is. It's possible that the harness on my singles rig has a lower d-ring then the one of my doubles rig.

The corrogated hose is loooong. I replaced mine with a 14". Mine came with an 18".

I agree..I mean they stamp and sew "Halcyon DIR Dive Systems" on their product......

What more proof do you need that DIR is a marketing tool for Halycon.

You and GDI need to go find a thread in which your comments are relative to the discussion at hand. Thanks for the useless hijack.

Back to the question. Yes...get a honkin' bolt snap. They are so nice with gloves.

I have found that when my tank is in the perfect position for me to reach my valve (single), then the SPG is also perfectly routed to the left hip D-ring. Just an inch or so different in the tank placement makes it an exercise in frustration.

.

Make sure that the harness is adjusted properly, not too loose. You may need to play around with the height of your tank.

This should fix the problem, but if you still can't reach the gauge because of your body type or whatever, get a slightly longer hose. My backup reg hose is a little longer because the suggested length is simply too small.

A good rule of thumb is that with the gauge unclipped, it should hang down at the same level of your left d-ring. This helps build in muscle memory and makes sure there is not a lot of extra hose. Once the hose length is right, you can learn to clip and unclip the gauge pretty quickly. When re-clipping, open the bolt, touch the head of the clip to the webbing just before the d-ring and pull back. You will catch the d-ring 95% of the time on the 1st try.
