If they have the Knowledge Reviews at the end of each chapter still in the manual, they can be a good buy. If those are missing, you'll likely be out some cash since you are required to show proof of completing them during the course.

Some instructors will look to see that they are completed and sign off on them, others want the original hard copy or a photo copy of the completed pages.
 
Is that the latest edition?
 
As a PADI Instructor, I'd say it would be safest to avoid the used ones since they may be missing the knowledge reviews. With that in mind, don't pay $64 for a new one, depending on which version your instructor wants you to have, we have them from $34-48 new: Padi from LeisurePro.com
