can't really speak for your area but if you're willing to travel, try the Cooper River in SC (Charleston). That river is known for it's megalodon sharks teeth along with other fossils, but we have found a lot of really cool old bottles there as well. It's not easy and the bottles are more difficult to find than the teeth but it has given up an awful lot of bottles.

There's a spot or two near Sandy Hook that I occasionally frequent this time of year. I've gotten a couple nice bottles out of there over the years.

Just need to watch the tides....

....and I agree with Dave about the CooperRiver because I found a really nice one in the Cooper River last year....and it was from New York!.

PM me if you are interested in meeting up and giving them a try in November...

Brian is correct! I live nearby, many nice old bottles are found there, also almost anywhere up and down the Shrewsbury and Navesink rivers especially by boat. Poor viz mostly, but shallow and lotsa bottles If you need more info let me know, Ken

Rookie move here, but I've seen some stuff out here about bottles. What exactly are bottles in this context?

That here in Richmond, the James river near downtown has a lot of bottles. THe local LDS is servicing a guy who has been doing a lot of vottle divinig lately and said that he has been getting a bunch of great bottles there.

Edit: Oh yeah, and he had to define "bottle diving" for me as well. Diving any popular boating/skiing area (preferably when boats aren't so numerous!) can net you some awfully neat stuff.

Just curious what the water temp is down there in the James River this time of the year...

The Delaware Water Gap, I dont know the exact place since I have not been there yet. But it is known that an old freight train carrying Miller beer bottles jumped track I believe in the 50's and bottles can be found around the site.

Reply to dutchfin: I have been an antique bottle digger in central NJ for 32 years. I know of many sites where there may be antique bottles underwater. I am not a scuba diver, but I wish I were. I would be glad to share my knowledge for a share of the bottles found. Please contact me at jgorrin@comcast.net

Thanks, jgorrin

Havre de grace in the Chesapeke bay. Used to be an old dump and there are many bottles to be found. I went diving there in January and there was stuff all over the place. Most bottles were broken, but we found a few intact.

How cool. I am a newbie diver in Ohio and this just caught my eye on the new posts listing. I love bottles and have some old ones... never thought about finding them diving...

I know this is the forum for E. Coast... but anyone know anywhere else bottles are found? What kind of bottles? Does anyone have any pictures you would be willing share? I'm just really intrigued! Thanks:scatter:

There are 2 nice boat dives in NY that has many bottles, if U can find them.
The Lizzie D. This is an old tug boat that went down durring prohibition with a full boat of illegal booze(wiskey and rum). To all that say the boat has no more bottle, I found a bottle sept 2003. http://njscuba.net/sites/wreck_lizzie_d.html

The other is the pipe barge, this was a old garbage(maybe) barge that went down in the 30s. A lot of bottles, tea cups, and other things.

The Pipe Barge is a cool dive, and is shallow enough (60fsw) for divers of all levels. Maybe we could get a WV group heading out there around Memorial Day.

Nosing around for bottles and artifacts there could be rewarding if you get lucky. No one knows exactly where this wreck came from. Finding something that identifies it would make for some great bragging rights.

Someone asked what kind of bottles to dive for. Go to eBay and click on the following links: Collectibles > Bottles & Insulators > Bottles > Antique (Pre-1900). I am willing to research where to dive, or show you how to, for a share of the bottles. I live in NJ. If anyone finds good bottles I am interested in buying them. My email is jgorrin@comcast.net
Thanks, Jeff

OK, I'll bite. Send me an email XJae@wreckvalley.com
We might be able to arrange some sort of joint venture.

I'm in central NJ also. I have a tremendous bottle collection.
Mostly from above ground, mostly beer bottles of recent age.
I do have some really old ones out of sommerville that i found hiking the trails,
but they are not for sale, or so the bottles say, "not to be sold".
I've come across some old chemist bottles from the philly area as well.
