Here it is. Keep in mind a few things when you look at it.
The background isn't going to be orange, I just put it there to contrast with the states and make it easier to see
The ship in the final, will be much cleaner, and a 1 or 2 color illustration that matches the rest of the art
the fonts may change, just there for placement now
the outlines of the states will be much smoother in the final
Once again this is a very quick rough job. I wasn't about to put the time in and have everyone hate the concept. I do think it's kind of cool to use the Doria, though, most famous wreck in our area, and the angle it rests on sits very nicely on top of the 3 states. Just let me know what you all think of the layout, if it's a keeper I'll start working on the real one. I may even go out and buy a Doria model, so I can take some shots of it, on the perfect angle for the logo.

Looks great Chris.
If that's your "rough" version I can't wait to see the final one!

I like the doria. Maybe you can give the "telephone pole" a cameo off one of the decks.
Actually I think I see it right in front of the funnel.

maybe you can distort the states so that they form a valley with the doria in it?
grouchyturtle
October 27th, 2003, 01:09 PM
That sounds cool. the only problem is you want the states to still be recognizable.
Also the Doria is sitting on its side on kind of a big open plain at the bottom, kind of like the way the states are now. Unless maybe I space the states out more, so the space between then kind of forms a valley. Then the doria would actually kind of be sitting in the Delaware!

I like it Chris. The idea of taking pictures from a model is good though because the ship does look a little strange upside down.

Maybe the final one should run more vertical. That way it isn't upside down, but you'll still be able to see the top of the ship, where the most detail is.

Well, I tried Martin's idea, still a VERY rough version. I don't really like it. As I thought, NJ looks ok, but PA and NY are unrecognizable.
I was going to try the other idea I had of making the river form the valley, but I think it will be WAY too off centered, if you look at how far to the right of the 3 states the Delaware is.
Still working on getting a better boat, couldn't find a model, may try to actually create it in 3D, or just draw one from scratch.
I have to admit that I still like the first one better.

given the font and color scheme, I would thing thicker lines on the states and a slightly more cartoonish ship would be better... It would also look better in a smaller version that way to...

i agree regarding the more cartoonish ship. otherwise it looks sort of out of place.

Well as I said in the final the ship will be illustrated to match the rest of the design, BUT...
Do you mean really cartoon as in unrealistic proportions?
Cause that actually sounds like a cool idea!

Here are 2 versions. Everything is cleaned up, I used the suggestion of using a cartoonish ship (based off the Doria), and a few other little changes from the rough version.
I like th second one better, even thought the first one sits on top of the states better. Maybe it just needs a shadow and a hole in the bottom of the ship?
how about this one? it's about Wrecks too, isn't it? Although I am thinking to change diver to make it more Horizontal to make it more DIR, you know...

grunzster! nice work. I like the tipped ship, sicne it's about a Wreck! the other one looks nice too, but it's less apparent that it's a about wrecks or wreck diving...

I like the last one the best. I think maybe the boat should be a little smaller and higher, though.
It looks better with the shaddows and the gradient, the only problem is it will be harder and more expensive to print, especially on shirts? Also the detail of the boat will cause problems too.
That's why I made mine more flat with just solid colors. I actually started working on one where the ring has a metal texture, and all the text is engraved into it, but it would cause the same problems.
We could always have 2 versions though. The really detailed one for the site and a more simplified one for printing or at least T-shirts.
Is that boat a royalty free image? We don't want to get sued if we use it. The one I originally put in there I created.
Can you send me the boat and the diver as separate files? If everone likes them, I'll rebuild it using my source (layered) file, that way it comes out really clean.

Yes the boat is 100% royalty free. no problem with that. I did the shadows in photoshop. If you have photoshop, I can send you the soure file with layers and you can move them around, etc...
I agree, we need two versions for T-shirts and the web... for best results.

Send it over I have Photoshop!
The rest of the logo I created in Illustrator.
I'll set it up so we just have a single file for both versions of the the logo and you just have to turn a few layers on and off depending on which one you need.
I'm guessing the T-shirt version will be the same as the one you did, I'll just kill the shadows and gradients and make the boat more like the style of the one I did.

i like the center color, maybe a deeper sea blue on the outer? like scubaboards background.
or should the logo be circular?
i like the font and the alpha dd flags.
it really makes the logo stand out.
something is up with the ship?
maybe rotate it 90 deg left.
You could probably get it to sit dead center pa and use the tip of the mast in the y or i on the logo if it doesn't fit.
maybe a black silhouette diver, inside ny.
someting for nj, maybe. a lobster or two?
maybe widen the width of the ring and throw some cord around the edges like a lifesaver.
maybe it's too busy now? hmmm.
maybe time for another beer or two. :boozer::boozer:
or whatever else that was i had.
oh, and broadening up the states, like matt mentioned, sounds good. hiccup...

maybe it's too busy now? That's what I'm thinking. I think all the elements are in place, just need a little nudging though.
The final probably won't have any color in the background. It will be transparent once it's on the site. I like the center color. I think made change it to a blue that matches the color of the water on the site once that's done. Or maybe blue baove the states and a sandy color below them.

so it wouldnt be an easy thing to rotate the ship
and try it out?
grouchyturtle
November 1st, 2003, 09:28 AM
sure we could rotate it a little. I was thinking of making it a little smaller anyway. I just wouldn't ad anything to it at this point.
Here are the 2 finals for the site. Made the boat a little smaller and rotated. Changed the color of he diver. Tweeked the shadows and the color in the center.
I like the first one, the rusted metal look is kind of cool, but since it's hard to read at smaller sizes, I'd go with the second one.
And here's the simplified version for printing. I had to use a different diver, because the reolution on the other one was way too low.

Yeah, the rusty metal one is hard to read.
With the ship, I was originally thinking tilted more left, so the starboard gunwhale and the bottom of the keel are horizontal, like it was lying at the bottom.
I also thought it would look good taking up a lot of that dead gray space of pennsylvania.

Now that I look at them side by side I like the larger boat better too. And the diver is way too small in mine when you shrink it down.
I posted some new ones, though. They are very close to the original, just with the shadows tweeked a little, a bevel on the ring, and the diver a different color (his trim is better too!).
Also one with an alternate diver and one of each with that rust texture in the middle of the ring instead of the teal.
I like the teal better I think, but the rust may make it pop out more once it's on the web site. I also posted a new print version of the logo too.
They are all at Wreck Valley Logos (http://gallery.wreckvalley.com/Logo-Drafts)

Grunzster, I like version 1a the best now. I like what you did with the border circle.. nice job with the shadows! The only hting is that the diver I think is not working well when it's dark like this. Other than that, I think it's a keeper.
Oh, and the print version is perfect, imo.

November 5th, 2003, 09:19 AM
I'll just move the diver down on the layered file to where XJae put him and I think we have keeper.
We can finally get at least a place holder page up, with the logo and a link to the gallery then.
I'll find a use for that funky rust texture somewhere!
Tell us the truth though VT, you like that one the best, because your avatar made it into the logo.
Xjae nice edit for working with a flattened file.

Are you done tweeking?
Ready to put this thing to bed?
Last question - why does the print version need to be a different color with a different diver? shouldn't it be identical only less detailed? (I realize printing costs increase as you add colors.)

We're good to go!
I'm going to throw a quick place holder page together and maybe get it up later, if not by tomorrow.
The truth is the diver is so small and the file is so low res that I had trouble duplicating him as a vector image,so I created the other diver. Other than that the logos are pretty much identical, just less colors, no shadows, and much less detail on the boat.

I don't think it really needs that.
Too many scuba related logos have a big dive flag in them. Besides we already have the small diver down and alpha flags on the ring.
Everyone seems to be happy with it now, let's just leave it alone. We could keep screwing with it forever and it will never be done!
